Missing PEM nut to secure NVMe to circuit board (The seller compensated me to fix it myself)

Missing PEM nut to secure NVMe to circuit board (The seller compensated me to fix it myself)
I don't know if the board works at all because I cannot install an NVMe to test it out. The reason is that it arrived without a PEM nut to secure and NVMe. It looks like this was part of a batch that was rushed through production but did not go through any quality assurance in the process. It makes me leery of the quality of the construction. I am now having to spend more time and money to order a PEM nut just to get this working. I should not have to do this.I contacted the seller. They gave me $10 for my troubles but I still needed to solve the problem myself by ordering some MVMe standoffs. They did offer an apology and promised that they would fix their quality control. The drive seems to be working fine after securing it with the standoffs that I bought. I just wish it hadn't needed to be repaired by me. I decided to increase my rating to 4 stars. The drive works but needed some effort on my part to get it to work properly.I hope they resolve their quality control issues going forward. I'm sure that if you get a drive with all the parts, you'll be completely satisfied.

As you can see from the product description, they’ve “upgraded” the device. Instead of a screw, they now give you a rubber grommet to hold the NVMe drive in place. The included directions still have a picture of the screws and screwdriver that were previously included. I’d prefer a screw to secure the drive, but it seems to be working just fine with the rubber grommet. My enclosure is sitting in one spot on my desk, so there is virtually no movement of my device to potentially jar the drive loose. But with the thermal heat pad installed and the use of the rubber grommet, I really can’t see the drive coming loose in everyday use, even carrying/moving it around.

This device is definitely a 5 star product. I also purchased a 2TB Pioneer TLC NVMe drive with the Phison PS5012-E12 controller to put in this enclosure. I went with this drive because of the Phison controller, the TBW for the Pioneer drive was some of the highest for the price, and the Pioneer drive comes with a 5 year warranty. The drive is FAST connected via TB 3/USB 4 to my M1 Mac mini. I consistently get close the theoretical limits for both read and write. If I let the speed tests run, the write speeds will start to trail off fairly quickly, but even when they slow, they’re still more than fast enough for anything you throw at it. The enclosure can also get warm, but it’s never come close to approaching a temperature that made the device too hot to handle. All in all, after a few days with this device putting it through its paces, it definitely lives up to the hype. There are currently no other products out there like this one that are TB 3/USB 4 and backwards compatible.

Also, ignore the relatively low rating of this product now. All the one star reviews were because of the missing screw. The manufacturer has since fixed that quality control issue and is now including two rubber grommets.

Outstanding NVME enclosure! I've tried a few, but this is the most well made and fastest on my M1 Mac I've ever purchased..... Please read on....

I'm a photographer with a huge LR catalog from tens of thousands of images through the years. Before purchasing this product - LR imports and the catalog logging would take minutes. So, I bought an M1 Mac Mini thinking that would "cure" my issues - but, my LR catalog used to sit on a RAID_1 2TB SATA SSD enclosure, and I found it wasn't the host computer, but rather the external SSD 2.5" drive enclose that was bogging it down.. So, the search began....

I bought this product after all the excellent reviews - along with a Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 - and this combination rocks! At 2700 MBs writes and 2600 MB/s reads - this thing is a "pocket rocket" and nears the native speeds of my internal M1's SSD. For me...

Exceptional performance, while at a price - is well worth it.

I'll edit this review if anything goes wrong - but, for now? It's a 5-star.

    Hope this helps!

It's currently very hard to find an external NVME enclosure that delivers consistently fast speed on an M1 Mac running Monterey. It seems most combinations of enclosures and drives deliver substandard throughput, if they reliably connect at all. There are pre-configured Thunderbolt drives from OWC that work reliably (I have two), but they are generally slower and more expensive, and most are not engineered for replacing the internal NVME drive.

After several unsuccessful experiments and many hours digging deep into forum postings, this enclosure seemed to be consistently recommended for achieving maximum speed, so I decided to take a chance on it. The specific NVME drive and enclosure combination can be important; I opted for a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro (MZ-V8P2T0B).

I'm pleased to report that this combination works perfectly on my Mac Studio (connected through a Plugable TB4 hub). I reliably see 2700 MBps read *AND* write speeds from Blackmagic Disk Speed Test with the drive half-full. Most other TB4 firewire SSD enclosures provide only ~ 2400 read and 1400 write (I don't use USB-C for any drives requiring fast speed, as macOS Monterey has known throughput issues over USB).

The enclosure is small (about the size of a deck of playing cards), solidly constructed, and easy (tool-free) to install a drive into. It includes a couple adhesive thermal pads of varying thickness that stick between the installed NVME drive and the case. The case does get very hot to the touch, especially when actively used (which I'm hoping means that the design is effectively dissipating that heat away from the M.2 drive itself).

Only time will tell for the longevity of this setup, but so far it is the best solution I've found for a speedy and small external TB4 drive for my current macOS system.

The device works well for turning an NVME drive into an external USB4 drive.

Sequential transfer speeds are - while slower than native - decent at about 1100MB/s

Low queue depth random reads - however - are VERY slow at only 17MB/s compares to ~40-50MB/s for most native NVME drives.

This results in software updates, program loads, etc. feeling somewhat slow.

I presume the controller in the unit simply does not have sufficient processing capability to keep up with the fast low queue depth random reads of an NVME drive.

In short, while you can boot an OS off of it, it won't be lighting fast. It will be excellent for high speed large file transfers to external media though.
