Great Execution But Not Perfect... Still Highly Recommended!

Great Execution But Not Perfect... Still Highly Recommended!
TL;DR: Still a great price even after all its few downfalls. Highly recommend this. If you still want the best experience: get the original system with original games or a flash cart like the EverDrive. Read below for more detail...------------------------------------------------Hardware------------------------------------------------Body:Almost identical to a regular DMG-01 Game Boy, but 30% smaller. The plastic feels great. Has a nice weight to it. The cartridge area (where the RPI Zero is housed) gets warm after some time. I’m not sure how that will affect the RPI Zero's life long term.Buttons:The A / B / X / Y buttons are great. The D-pad is so-so… It tilts (look at second to last 2 pictures) which sometimes causes me to accidentally input “down”, when I mean to input “right” in platform games. The L & R buttons while great to have, need you to get used to them and require you to hold the system a certain way. Fortunately, Retroflag added dimples to make the buttons easier to find.Screen:Looks great and has good viewing angles… But why has no one mentioned anything about screen tearing? There is screen tearing in certain games... I've added a picture of Megaman on Genesis screen tearing when going up or down ladders while changing areas. Words are also blurry in Retropie, but that's because the menus aren't optimized for small screens.Sound:The headphone jack has constant white noise and sometimes crackles. Sometimes the crackling is due to the emulation. The constant white noise is due to the hardware. The speaker itself is great... It goes to good volumes. Make sure to change your volume in Emulation Station to 100%... The default is set to 77%.------------------------------------------------Games------------------------------------------------If you did your research you already know that the RPI Zero is fairly weak. These are the ones I’ve tested using Retropie. Please be aware I’ve only tested at most 5 games for each system so take this all with a grain of salt. At the very least, it should give you a general idea of how well certain systems run.Atari 2600: Works great. A bit buggy in some games.Atari Lynx: Works great.Family Disk System: Works great.FBA: Works great. Make sure to use the correct ROM set version. Some games don't work but most do.Game Gear: Works great... Although having it for a few days the emulation seems a little sped up compared to the actual hardware. Don't quote me on this though as I can't 100% confirm.Game Boy: Works great.Game Boy Advance: Games run well using lr-gpsp but it has fairly inaccurate emulation. I tried running Megaman Zero and that was a bug fest. Running lr-mgba on the Pi Zero has framerate and sound issues.Game Boy Color: Works great.Genesis: Works great.Master System: Works great.Neo Geo: Works great. Make sure to use the correct ROM set version.Neo Geo Pocket: Slow framerate. Sound distortion too.Neo Geo Pocket Color: Slow framerate. Sound distortion too.NES: Works great.PC Engine: Works great.PC Engine CD: Works great. Make sure to get the correct BIOS (capitalization and lowercase matters). I've only had luck with CHD files.Sega 32X: Buggy. Sound distortion… Games have frame rate issues. The Amazing Spider-man crashed on me.Sega CD: Works great. Make sure to use BIN and CUE files. If you scrape, make sure to delete the BIN entries or else you'll see duplicates of every rom.SNES: Games don’t run completely at full speed but it is definitely playable. Safe to say that all the games that need a special chip won’t work well. Some games are completely buggy like SF Alpha 2.------------------------------------------------Additional Related Information------------------------------------------------Low Volume:Remember to set volume to 100% in Emulation Station. It is set to 77% by default.Disk Check on Boot Bug:For those that have the GPi performing a disk check on each boot…You’ll need to create a file called (fsck.conf) with the contents:`````````````````````[Unit]Before=systemd-fsck-root.service`````````````````````And put it in the directory: (/etc/systemd/system/fake-hwclock.service.d/). You will have to use sudo commands to create that folder. Thank you to tsoliman on Reddit for that.Faster Boot:Follow Retroflag's instructions on their website to make your boot faster. You will need to change Timezone and set GMT +8.Better Theme:I recommend using Gameboy Zero 3.5” Theme or Dark Theme for this system. The text is not as blurry as the stock theme. Installation instructions is on their GitHub.Scraping:Use Skraper. It is in beta and takes a little to get used to the UI, but it’s faster than scraping directly on the Pi Zero. Make sure to change the settings from scraping the video to an image. Having videos for games will lessen battery life and also will take up a lot of space on the micro SD card.WiFi and Bluetooth Toggle:Search on Reddit subreddit @ retroflag_gpi for instructions to install a bluetooth and WiFi toggle. It will most likely save your battery life. Capitalization of folders and files matters if you have any issues.------------------------------------------------Conclusion------------------------------------------------Even after issues like the d-pad, screen tearing, a “weak” RPI Zero, and spotty emulation for certain consoles, it’s still amazing for the price of $69.99. Highly recommend this. However, if you still want the best experience: get the original system with original games or a flash cart like the EverDrive.
