The GPi case itself it extremely well made. The materials and finish are very nearly spot on compared to the original gameboy. The dpad and button feel - something very few get right - are flawless. The hidden shoulder buttons aren't quite as perfect, but they're the best solution I've seen in a portrait-oriented handheld so far. The display is bright and clear, and the speaker is sufficient for what it is. It's easy to assemble and easy to load up the retropie software and GPi case patches.
The only thing that lets the whole experience down is the use of AA batteries. They just don't have enough juice to give more than about 3hrs of runtime, and that's not enough for a modern device with relatively low power requirements. A lipo pack and USB charging would have made this a perfect device.
Sound quality is a bit off. There's a settings change you can research to do to force mono and that seems to fix most of it. There seems to be something off about the wiring when plugged in via the AC cable, sound gets scratchy. This only happens when plugged in and it's a common complaint online.
I was a bit disappointed this takes AA and not rechargeable battery cells. I bought rechargeable AA batteries and take them out to charge it. I also use a portable battery with a USB port to power it for extended periods.
Great for the money. I always wanted to build something like this but the parts were too expensive. It's crazy how it comes together so well in this. The screen is great quality for the cost and size.
I use a raspberry pi zero w with this and it's amazing. I use blutooth connected to my mac via Typeeto to use my mac keyboard as a USB keyboard on it when I need to. Otherwise I enabled SSH and use SFTP to upload files to it wirelessly.
The build quality on this is excellent the buttons and D pad all feel like they should and the screen looks stunning especially playing NES games as the colors are very sharp and match the original Nintendo.
I love the cartridge approach to this case I thought it was very clever how once you turn the power on it locks the cartridge in tight I was concerned that if it wiggled it may cause data to be corrupted.
Gameplay is great Battery life is better then I had anticipated.
My only concern and this is not retroflags fault is that this case requires some skill and know how to set up retropie. I think they could have raised the price on this and added an SD card with there version of retro pie with a large font for games build in and all you have to do is add ROMS and BIOS. Although this case does take some set up and some research on how to configure in the end it is all worth it I am very happy with this case and very lucky to own one. I hope that retro flag builds off this and makes different versions like a GBA version !! or a GBA version with a retropie 3 !!! either way thank you retroflag !!
The only issue I ran into during assembly was apparently my batteries were low, they came out of the kitchen drawer, who knows how long they'd been there. The screen would flicker, fade and and go to multi-colored lines, the FAQ for Retroflag left me with the impression I'd not gotten the Pi seated right, several reassembles later I finally figured out it was the batteries. A fresh set later I'm up and running with no issues. This was before I had the safe shut down scripts installed, I do not know for sure if they/the system includes any sort of battery monitoring/low battery indicator.
For those using a Pi-0 (no wifi) you're can install the Pi-0, configure the controls and turn on SSH then remove the Pi-0 and use a USB-Ethernet dongle (as i did) to connect with putty.
For Retroflag the only suggestion I'd make that this time would be to perhaps grab a git-hub or other file hosting option and build a pre-built image of Retropie with the configuration changes and safe shutdown installed. It would make a relatively easy setup process basically a 1 step and done.

Overall, very happy with the device and I would buy another to keep as a spare.
You need to add a pi zero and know what needs to be done with that but this isn't too difficult.
I have to make the assumption you know what you are doing to get here so this doesn't form part of the review.
Having a handheld Retropie is something amazing. Firing up all those old games in a handheld is awesome.
The You get a charger wire so you can plug it into a socket or a power bank like I have although this makes it less portable.
So for this it takes 3 AA batteries. I originally had duracell which it ate up. THen I used energizer rechargable which it also ate up.
However I bought some Amazon basic rechargable batteries and these lasted a fair while.
So having rechargable batteries is essential.
