I recently upgraded my computer's storage with the Samsung 970 EVO SSD, and I must say it has exceeded all my expectations. This drive is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to performance and reliability.

Breathes new life in to an older laptop

Over the past year I had gotten used to a level of performance from the new desktop I built that my old Dell XPS 15 9550 could not quite match. While overall that's not unexpected, one of the areas of opportunity I noticed was that the almost 5.5 year old laptop couldn't open multiple applications as quickly and in general felt a bit less responsive when opening programs.

After running some tests I determined there was enough of a delta in performance between the NVMe in my older laptop and the NVMe that I had installed in my desktop to likely account for this.

I didn't really need more space but I decided to try dropping one of these SSDs in to the laptop to see if it addressed the performance difference.

Installation:
After cloning the existing drive and swapping them I was quickly back up and running. M.2 drives are pretty easy to install, and this one is no different. I transferred the thermal pad from the old drive to the new one and closed the machine up and was able to boot it back up right away like nothing had happened.

Performance:
The performance improvement was definitely noticeable. While on paper not as fast as the drive in my desktop, the actual experience opening applications or starting things up in Windows after a fresh boot was noticeably better, shaving a second her or there off things that definitely could be a bit slower before. I timed things and while by most subjective measures the laptop wasn't *slow* before, it was shaving a half second or second here or there off opening things.

One area I definitely noticed improvements was in opening a handful of applications immediately after bootup. Before, they would take a couple seconds before the loading screen or application would appear and the full loading of each application would take a few more seconds. Now, it's able to pop up the first sign of each loading application in less than half a second and they all open much faster as though it's better able to read their data simultaneously.

Conclusion:
All in all, I got the improvement I was hoping for without breaking the bank. The extra storage is nice (the laptop's original SSD was 256GB) but not really necessary, however I'm not complaining about it for the money. Samsung continues to be my go-to for SSDs if I don't want to spend time researching the best of what's out there, and if they're on sale or offering a competitive $/GB, you can rarely go wrong with them.

O SSD Samsung 970 EVO já é famoso na indústria como uma das melhores linhas de SSD do mercado. Eu fiz alguns testes aqui e, como podem ver na imagem, as velocidades são incríveis, leituras de mais de 3400MB/s e escritas de mais de 2400MB/s. Um HD comum, por comparação, faz cerca de 140MB/s de leituras e escritas máximas. Outro número importante é o das IOPS - Operações de Entrada e Saída por Segundo. Um SSD desse tipo faz mais de 230 mil por segundo, enquanto um HD comum faz entre 200 e 800. São as IOPS que definem o quanto o armazenamento consegue lidar com acessos simultâneos do processador para abrir programas e arquivos. E é também esse alto número de IOPS que faz dos SSDs tão mais estáveis para rodar os SOs.

Então assim, se você ver ele com um preço bom em relação a outros SSDs do mesmo tamanho, vale a pena comprar.

Caso esteja muito mais caro, talvez não valha todo o investimento. Para um usuário comum, um SSD Sata pode ser suficiente para dar aquele UP no PC. Agora, para quem quer desempenho máximo, essa é a peça.

É importante lembrar que seu PC precisa suportar SSDs M2 do tipo NVMe e tamanho 2280 para instalar esse bichinho. Outra coisa a se considerar, principalmente se seu PC não tem dissipador de SSD M2, é comprar um dissipador avulso. O 970 EVO, por conta do desempenho, gera altas temperaturas. Sem nada dissipando, passa dos 70 graus brincando. Comprei um dissipador barato da China e instalei nele, hoje não passa de 59 graus em uso máximo.

Bought this for my new build, and I must say it's much faster than my previous desktops SATA SSD. Installing it was simple on my Gigabyte Z390 AORUS MASTER, only takes a minute, and it's pretty fool proof. Operating system is fast, and haven't experienced any issues so far.

I've read the biggest problem with SSDs is that because they have a finite number of writes, once you run out of writes on it, any data becomes unreadable and you can't retrieve it. The 500 GB model which I purchased has 300 TBW (Terabytes of writes), which means even if I were to write 10GB a day (which I wont) for 1 year, I'd only use 3.65 TB in 1 year. At that rate, it would take 82 years to get through this thing.

Ich hatte die Festplatte vor 9 Monaten gekauft Gebraucht Gut. Bin kürzlich zu Win11 Beta gewechselt un bekam Promt die Nachricht: Einer ihrer Speichervorichtungen benötigt ihre Aufmerksamkeit. Laut Windows hatte die Festplatte noch geschätzte Lebenserwartung von 20%. Habe dann mit CrystalDiskInfo und Samsung Magician geschaut was da los ist und es Stelle sich herraus das die Festplatte ihre offizielle Gewährleistung lang überschritten hat. Sei es nun der Gebrauch des Vorbesitzers oder ein Fehlerhaftes Windows Update ist da jetzt mal aussen vor. Die Samsung Angabe ist aufjedenfall 500Gb = 300 TB Garantie. Nun meine Platte ist Jetzt bei 1052605 GB = 1,052605 PB und Läuft immer nochmal schauen wie lange sie noch durchhält. Aufjedenfall ein Richtiger Panzer von einer Festplatte so durchzuhalten.

Breathes new Life into Old Machines

I used this to upgrade the storage on my 2017 MacBook Air. I am getting write speeds of around 1100+ MB/s and Write Speed of 1350+ MB/s which is more than twice that of the the older drive. But I did notice the machine does heat up more. So time will tell how good the heat dissipation of the drive is. Will post an update once this has been in use for some time.
Update: it’s been nearly 2 yrs that I installed this drive. Seems to be working fine. Perfect integration with the Mac OS. Have noted some heating issue but not sure if all of it is due to the drive since my Mac is 5+ yrs old. But it has increased longevity of my device no doubt. I would absolutely recommend this to all.
