With that being said, this board has a lot of features that are outlined in other reviews. My only complaint with this board is it's in the MEG lineup, which commands a premium price. Instead of including a bunch of stickers and cables I won't use, give me two options for the I/O plate. I understand it's against the grain of industry standard, but I would've loved to see a raw metal backplate with different color sticker overlays aside from black.
Firstly, there's no jspi1 pin connector, and the Bios chip is under the pcie slot bracket. This design completely eliminates any method to update the Bios except from the system mflash, which means you have to obtain a 12 gen cpu to update the Bios then you can use a 13 gen cpu.
Besides, you can hear the noise from the motherboard sometimes and I cannot distinguish whether it is coming from the pch fan or some inductors.
Moreover, the io bracket does not completely fit, and it nearly does not fit at all. At least mine's HDMI port is completely offed and I need to drag the port to plug the cable in.
Regardless all the small issues, the motherboard itself is still very good, especially compared to the price of z790i.
Aesthetically, the motherboard is sleek and very minimalistic, but it's packed with a lot of features for tweakers. It's also great for those who are building in an ITX case that doesn't have ample number of storage mounts, since this is the only Z690i board I'm aware of that has 3 m.2 slots.
There is one MAJOR issue to be aware of, especially if you're an EVGA FTW3 card owner. Cards with backplates that cover every bit of the PCB (including the area running along the PCIE slot railing, opposite from where you would screw into the case) will NOT fit this board if you slot it via traditional horizontal mount and you will not get any video signal. What I mean by that is on the bottom of the motherboard's I/O panel's heatsink is a very tiny nub (check an enlarged image of this board). That nub houses a screw from the back which allows the heatsink to mount. The problem is that small protrusion interferes with the GPU backplate and it won't allow the GPU to fully be flushed into the PCIE slot. Compare an MSI card (or any card) and an EVGA cards' back plate and slot railing, and you'll know what I mean. Your only solutions for getting the card inserted is to dremel the piece off the gpu backplate, remove the backplate entirely, or vertical mount it with riser cables.
Not really an oversight on MSI's part since all GPU manufacturers have their own backplate designs, but this is something to be aware of. Luckily, most of the cases on the market allows GPUs to be mounted vertically, so this shouldn't be a problem. But for those who have ITX cases that can only mount horizontally, please be aware. The board isn't broken, it's a clearance issue.

This is a well thought out motherboard with quality materials. Plenty of space for an AIO pump, connectors placed appropriately, solid heat sinks, and many nice touches that make this board work great in a Small Form Factor case.
The only negative was the full manual. It's not included in the box (online only) and the section on M.2 connectors was slightly confusing. Other than that this thing is good to go!

This was apparent the moment I hooked up this beautiful motherboard and paired it with a 12700k (overclocked to 5.3ghz). This PC hums along without any problems whatsoever, and I haven't had a single BSOD in 10 days of heavy use.
MSIs bios gui has been updated as is easier to use than previous generations, I must add.
If there's one single complaint, and believe me this is nitpicky but the pins for the fan and usb headers bend way easier than one would expect for such an expensive unit. So, be careful not to leave fans plugged into the mobo if you end up having to re-seat the motherboard into the case for any reason.
Great motherboard, MSI.
Top reviews from other countries
- Thunderbolt/USB4 with miniDP for direct injection of video from your GPU into the Thunderbolt channel without incurring a performance cost
- excellent flexibility over storage - obviously no pcie 5 storage on z690, but I’m happy to gamble that we’re likely a few years away from peak pcie 5 SSDs and pcie 4 will suit my needs for the life of this build
- solid MSI uefi interface and features
- great air cooler compatibility - this was the real decider for me between this and the ASUs strix z690i, which basically requires using liquid cooling or a tiny air cooler (not ideal on a performance board). For me, a big noctua air cooler is a strong preference due to similar performance to liquid cooling, low/no risk of mechanical failure and quieter running. This board was the only premium z690 itx that fit the bill for me.
Overall quite pleased - most other features are not unique to this board. I’m using a 12600k at stock, so although the solid power delivery is nice, wasn’t essential for me.
A couple of minor points to consider:
- the heat sink on the m.2 slot up top requires a double sided SSD to work as intended - single sided drives won’t touch the heat spreader without DIY adding thermal pads.
- not unique to this board (limits of ITX) but additional system fan headers would have been nice. As it is, I run all three through a splitter off one head, which gives less fine control, but probably doesn’t make a difference
Hope you find this helpful, although I know z790 is just around the corner…
