Completely different Mass Effect experience with vastly improved combat and graphics. Will leave you hooked!
As a hardcore fan of the Trilogy, I was stoked about ME Andromeda. I followed this game ever since its official announcement a little over 2 years ago at E3 2015. I have thousands of hours in the original games and still play them when I can. Mass Effect Andromeda received shaky reviews when the review embargo dropped, but those reviews based their negativity on 3 things that take place very early on in the game. It's like many reviewers never bothered to actually play the entire game, and the ones that did gave it pretty decent scores (PC gamer, Forbes, and game informer to list a few). Most negative reviews were based off a small number of issues that popped up very early on, and all but a few were taken care of thanks to an update a few weeks ago. This game, or any other game in the future for that matter, will never live up to the greatness of the original Mass Effect. Even if it does share part of the title.Everything thought this was going to be a game just like the originals, just pluck out Shepard and put in a new hero, but its an entirely new game with new background stories and a vastly different feel. This new universe does not have the same memorable characters, but they are likable, and it's a game that is NOT meant to be rushed through and in my opinion its meant to be played as a whole. Combining the critical path quest, side quests, loyalty missions, and narrative opportunities. If you play the game and only make your way through the main story quest (critical path), then you are missing out on 3/4ths of the total story. The main campaign is a little boilerplate, as are the Kett (main enemy) and its leader, but the combat against them has never felt better. The jet pack/biotic jump is the best thing to happen to a Mass Effect game in a very long time. Combat is fluid, fast, responsive, and it feels good. Driving controls are a little clunky at first, but after upgrading your rover (The Nomad), you realize that it was meant to feel that way and subsequent upgrades vastly improve its handling and speed. Guns are everywhere, as are mods/upgrades. Skills are also plentiful, but I'm not a fan of this new open-class system where you can switch to any new skill on-the-fly. There are SO many skills that they basically cancel each other out and you end up using your go to 4-5 skills constantly rather than be pushed to try something new. The crafting system is immense and there are hundreds, if not thousands of combinations waiting to be used, but the ones I tried were weak and less than satisfying. So I went back to my usual Milky Way weapons. Voice acting is good all around. Not great, but good. There are some like PeeBee, Dr. Lexi, and a few others, that stand out as the best. This game really shines once you get about 15 hours in or so and you can start looking at other planets. The diversity and scenery of the explorable planets are really something amazing. The sheer size of these places leaves you impressed. They are planned out and look hand crafted. None of that procedurally generated mess. I only have a few issues with ME: Andromeda. The biggest problems are now fixed, which were the odd looking eyes, mouth movements, and some glitches. Exploring in space is breathtaking, but it comes at a cost. That much detail needs to load, so instead of fast traveling times like in prior games, they masked it with this 'real-time' flying experience. So you start off with a solar system overview and once you select a planet, the ship slowly flies to it until it comes into view. It's basically a first-person view from the ship's perspective. Anytime you travel to a planet or anomaly, you can exit the galaxy map and see that destination right outside the ship's windows. It could be a comet, a boarded ship, a satellite, planets, etc. It makes for AMAZING visuals, but again, the downside is that it has to load. They have improved travel time with a skip button, but it only works on certain parts of the fly-in.All in all, this game will have you hooked and even though it will never live up to Commander Shepard and crew, it's interesting in its own right. The numerous vaults are immense and as stunning as the visuals in space. Dialogue has a lot of options not simply the right or wrong, live or die kind of choices. Although there are a few of those that pop up as a callback. Overall I would give this game 8.5, maybe a 9 for its replay value. Multiplayer is fun and fast paced. 10x more challenging that ME3 and coordinating with your teammates becomes a must in the higher difficulties. Play this game in its entirety at your own pace. Complete outposts, side quests, and loyalty missions, alongside the main quest line. Doing so opens up the entire story and tons of background info which help fill in all the questions and lacking areas within the critical path. If you plan to 100% this game, be prepared to spend upwards of 100 hours if not more. I took my time on side quests and explored alot. Haven't landed on the last planet (but that's next) and I have to find 2 more Arks. In total, I'm approaching 220 hours and I still have a lot of game left to play. So the entertainment hours per dollar is great. In short, stick with it. The first few hours are very slow, and if you have those reviews in your mind, you start to get depressed because they look to be true. But once you get passed the tutorials and introductions it starts to pick up. Then teammates start to pick up as well as great side quests. That's when it starts to get good. hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Well, I’ve taken the game all the way thru to the end (or at least one of the endings…), I had thought about doing a review on Amazon.com earlier while still in play, but thought the better of it until getting completely done with this one.

I’ve played over a half dozen Bio-Ware games, and some of them, several times through for the pure enjoyment of them. This one, while "bascially" interesting, compared to their previous ones is a let-down. Certainly not a complete failure, but on a number of levels it does come across as somewhat thrown together, or, a bit of a mess. So here are the positives and negatives:

Positives:

- Many varied locations with large, diverse landscapes that are fairly well done as per Bio-Ware’s usual fantasy world creation. Keeps the boredom quotient minimized.
- Many different folks to interface with, keeps you on your toes to make sure you don’t miss anything.
- Crew and other significant characters can be quite diverse with some possibly interesting personalities at times.
- Number of different romance options, but romancing some weird aliens can be a bit of a turnoff, unless one is really adventurous.
- Ship layout of the Tempest is fairly well organized. Ditto for the Nexus.
- There is logical progression of the plot, but can also turn sometimes into a bit too much linearity, limiting what you can do and where you can go. Plot is interesting, but at times, one wonders where it’s really going.

Negatives (and way too many to list all, will try to hit the main ones):

- Item crafting: Supposed to be one of the mainstays of the game, but well into the game, it’s really not that impacting. Research on what is needed for crafting really drops off the table as a viable support action about half-way thru the game, as well.
- Leveling up: OK, there are many options when one does this, but…. ALL of the enemies encountered LEVEL UP WITH YOU!!. Meaning, that even though you think you have this super powerful character that can mop the floor against opponents, doesn’t make any difference, the level and intensity of enemies' combat encounters stays basically the same level as your protagonist's, thru-out the entire game, so…. Leveling up becomes then, just a rote exercise, and does nothing really for significantly impacting game play advancement. There is basically NO real feeling of accomplishment while leveling up.
- (Which brings me to…) Combat: Lots and lots and lots… (did I mention all of the combat you will be facing??...). Even at the lowest game setting levels, some combat encounters can be brutal (the level that claims, “just the story”, is a line of garbage, combat is even very difficult at times at this lowest level). There is too much cheating also by the AI, enemies drop in and appear from nowhere, I got really tired of hearing my squad exclaim “reinforcements are coming!!...” Sometimes it was just combat for the sake of combat only, and we not really logically story-driven. The only difference between the easier and tougher encounters, was the number of enemies, and how often they would respawn as “reinforcements”
- Voice Acting: Not one of Bio-Wares best attempts, by far (especially when one compares this to a RPG gem like the Witcher 3). Very sophomoric dialogue and delivery. Seems like the protagonist and allies talked like a bunch of teenagers on Red Bull… Seems like not many adults made the voyage to Andromeda.
- Navigating the planet surfaces: The Nomad vehicle controls did not make a lot of sense, they were all over the place, and, one could drop 100’s of feet in the Nomad w/ no damage at all. I know this is a fantasy, but C’MON!!. Also trying to get to some loot locations (and this was also similar to Dragon Age Inquisition…), that were perched in remote places, such that there is one-and-only-way-to-climb/get-up-to-it-thru-trial-and-error. I know that this is a computer game that has puzzles to be solved, but this shouldn’t continually have been one of them.
- Side Quests/Tasks: Conversely some of these were so simplistic that it was almost insulting that the player was asked to do something. Go talk to NPC, go get something close by that they are asking for, return it to NPC, side quest over. Not very well thought out in detail, but then again much of the game suffers from that approach.
- Angara Race: Again, I know that this is a fantasy, but who the heck came up with them speaking like a bunch of upper class twits from exclusive old New England families?? The graphics for them was OK, but for a race 1 million light-years from the Milky Way to speak that way??... oh please!!...
- Disappointed that several races from the previous Mass Andromeda series were omitted from this one. Again, this omission gives the impression that this game was put together hurriedly and rushed out the door to satisfy a short-fuse contract production schedule.
- The same fauna showing up on each of the light-years-apart different star systems?? That really is a ridiculous short-sight by a bunch of the code programmers pushing this game out the door too soon...
- Although I started playing the game well into a few of the later patches and, I myself did not experience it, but apparently the facial and eye expressions of the humans and some aliens were so poorly developed when the game first came out, that it made the game technically unplayable. From a professional game code programming standpoint, that is really unforgivable…
- When I first started playing, had way too many crashes to desktop. After a couple of the patches, that seemed to get corrected, but… still a few too many instances where the game froze, and, I needed the CNTRL/ALT/DELETE to get myself out of the freeze, and then restart for the latest Save.

So…. Was torn between giving it 2 or 3 Stars. But, since I took the game to its conclusion, settled in on 3 Stars, but... that really may be pushing the overall rating a bit. Still, in my defense, I don’t think I would have invested a 160 hours plus in playing a 2 Star game….

That’s about it. Could be more things to report, but I tried to hit the main ones that stuck out to me the most, especially those that showed up repetitively.

Hopefully Bio-Ware’s next offering is going to be developed a little better in programming depth upon release, but, I am also not going to jump on it immediately to purchase and play, I will wait for the in-depth reviews and the later patches before spending good money. Once bitten, twice shy, so to speak....

5.0 out of 5 stars It is not as good as the original trilogy

I'm almost half-way through the game. It is not as good as the original trilogy, but, unlike most people, I actually like it. A lot. Likeable characters, good storyline (so far). If you can overlook silly things like a few facial animations, it's a great game.

Sadly, they set it up to have a sequel and it's never going to happen now. A few loose ends will never be tied up, unless you read the comics.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mass effect at its soul but poorly executed....

No spoilers in this review.

There is a LOT of content in this game. 16 hours in and I was at less than 12% completion . The gameplay is tight, fun, challenging, and balanced. I played it on insanity, the hardest difficulty. The squad mates are interesting and side quests add meaningful depth to the world. The multiplayer portion is the same as ME3.

The facial animations are good where and when they count. Looks gorgeous on high or max settings. Will push your PC.

That being said, it gets old FAST after 20 hours and to do a "completionist" run it will take 50-70 hours total gameplay. These were some of the worst gaming hours I've had in my life. I'd advise to get the game and play it casually but any attempts at a "100%" will be met with disappointment.

It's evident that the developers rushed the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, your standard mass effect game.

I'll start by saying I've seen a lot of bad reviews for this game. So I was expecting to be disappointed.

Overall though I can't complain, this is your standard mass effect game. Feels a lot like mass effect 3, except now you have a vehicle to drive around on. There are a lot of side quests available which I think are the number one complaint of the game. For the most part those side quests are pretty unoriginal so I'll agree they could have been more creative in that regard.

Overall it feels and plays like mass effect, if you enjoyed playing #3, this feels like a continuation of that. If you didn't like #3, don't get this one.

Multiplayer is identical to the old mass effect, but buggy, super buggy. Lots of unexplainable crash to desktops. If you're buying this for the multi-player experience, wait until they patch it a bit. On a positive note the single player experience hasn't had any crashing problems at all. They seem to be very specific to the multi-player version of the game.

3.5 - 4 stars, enjoyable game, but not revolutionary in any regard. If you're expecting the next big thing out of this game, look elsewhere.
