Customers are mixed about the magnet strength of the air filter. Some mention that the magnets are strong enough to hold it in place and the vent creates a nice seal. However, others say that the magnetics are weak for front or side mounting, have trouble overcoming the distance to keep a strong grip, and are not as adhesive as they would like.

Wow, what a difference. First off, due to the configuration of my box, these go on the top vent, I don't even need to screw them into the case as the magnet frame adheres my steel frame very snugly. Secondly, I did a smoke test to see how much the air was being moved with the filters present and when they weren't. Though I'm sure some hindrance was present, with the naked eye I couldn't see any, the fans pulled in air just as fast with or without the Teks in place. I did the same test with unused filters of the previous sort as I had bought a entire box of them at the time and was curious to see how those held up against the Teks. I won't bore you with the nitty gritty details, same smoke test, and I could see a definite impact on how much air was being pulled through, the Teks won hands down.
Cleaning these things is a snap, though in part its due to how they're mounted on my rig, I just peel them off soak, rinse then air dry overnight and then slap them back into place with very little fuss. Someone who has actually mounted these with screws will have a more involved process obviously, but the filters themselves clean up very easily if you put a little effort into taking advantage of their features. As far as their performance at filtering dust is concerned, that will take a while to test but so far I've seen zero buildup on my brand new fans. I'll update this review in a month or so with further input.
I am using this filter with a free-standing pc fan running off an old cell-phone charger. It cools two free-standing Seagate Go Flex Drives which are passively cooled. After using the drives for a short while, I was annoyed to find the cases quickly became quite warm to the touch. In a cool room, they were running over 38 - 40 degrees Celsius (outside case temperature). So I set up this fan and now the cases are cool or at most, just a tad warm. I suspect this cooling will extend the disk life span and improve reliability, but I wanted to make sure the air was reasonably clean to protect the fan and the case openings from clogging.
This filter does the job. After 4 months of use (8 - 12 hours a day) the fan wasn't blowing as much air, so I pulled the filter and saw it held a lot of dust. But the fan and blades were clean. A quick wash with some soap and a rinse under the tap cleared the the dust away, and the air flow is back to normal. In the future, I'll wash the filter every 10 weeks or so, which is about how often I thoroughly dust and wipe down that area, anyway.
All in all, a nice balance of cleaning the air while not requiring any irksomely-frequent maintenance. You can rig up a filter, I suppose, but it is hardly worth the effort.
On the intake fan for a pc case, you may find it adequate -or not. I think it could work there as well.
It needed 3 things to make me happy:
1) Be easy to remove and clean.
It's MAGNETIC, so it just pulls off, a quick couple spurts with an airduster, or some time under the faucet if it's really dirty and you can toss this mother back on and it goes back to being awesome.
2) Needed to stop dust
This thing has a finer mesh than most pantyhose, let alone the stuff that comes with most computer cases. Every couple days I stop to marvel just how much dust this thing keeps my computer's guts safe from. If this thing was a bouncer at a classy club, that club would go out of business, because (you guessed it) nothing is getting in.
3) Be cheap.
Ok, so it could be cheaper, but honestly? $10 is not that bad, and it saves me from the struggle of tearing apart my computer once a month and going through seventeen million airdusters trying to clean it out. In fact, if you do the math, I'm saving myself nearly 10 cleanings a year, each one taking at least an hour, so that's ten hours saved. Let's use the valuation of my time that my crappy fast food job uses ($8.25 per hour) and what do you know, this thing will save me $82.50 a year in time, sounds like a steal at $10 now, doesn't it?
Unless your case is made entirely of plastic and you keep it in an airtight, heavily filtered environment, you NEED this filter, so stop reading, scroll back up, and click "Buy," you won't regret it.
