UPDATE: Well after a few months of VERY light use it died. I mean all the way dead. Like not detected in Bios dead. Could have been a loss of power that caused it. BTW it scares me to think I could potentially brick my SSD if I had to kill the power for any reason. It was great while it lasted though so I'm going through the RMA process now to see if I have better luck with a replacement. Will update again with results...
UPDATE2:
RMA process went a little slower than I hoped but considering I travel for work I can't really fault them for that. They sent me a replacement and the only thing I paid for was shipping of the defective ssd back to them. Dont feel like it's worth taking off a star. The replacement is working out so far! I'll update if it also dies but otherwise it's going great. 5 stars for a cheap, fast nvme SSD and honoring their warranty.
One thing you should be aware of is that win7 does not natively support NVMe. You will need to download a hotfix to use this drive in windows 7, and that hotfix is known to occasionally cause BSOD (although there's a second hotfix that supposedly fixes this). You can boot to win7 using this drive but you will need to perform some voodoo ritual and maybe sacrifice a goat during installation, or clone from another drive that already has the hotfix installed.
The drive does not come with the screw/standoff required for installation so you'll need to buy that separately. Your best bet is to go to your local electronics store and get it there, you can buy them on amazon but who wants to pay $12 for a single screw and standoff, that's ridiculous.
Heat-wise the drive is not *too* bad, a little warm for me but unfortunately the way my motherboard is configured the NVMe drive is sitting right next to the fans on my video card (it won't fit in any other slot, you could land a helicopter on that thing it's so huge). Try to situate it away from your GPU if you can, but I know that's not always possible.
Luckily, I only had this in the computer because I need more secondary storage for games since all my SATA slots are full. So nothing of significant value was lost. However, if this would have been my primary drive (which I expect a lot of people are buying this for) that would have been terrible. Unexpected failure with no real way to retrieve the data would have been pretty devastating if it were mounted as my primary drive.
So, I don't want to give it one star because the drive worked great when it worked. On the other hand, buyer beware: Could have just been the luck of the draw or it could be that a fairly unknown company doesn't have the same quality assurance of the big guys. Either way, I'm not buying this drive again, I'm not going to risk it.
