Customer reviews
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Learn more how customers reviews work on AmazonCustomers say
Customers like the performance and quality of the computer drive. For example, they mention it's fast as promised, gives native SSD speeds, and that a single threaded java app ran without latency. That said, opinions are mixed on the value.
AI-generated from the text of customer reviews
Customers like the performance of the drive. They say it's as fast as promised, the speed boost is only noticeable when moving large amounts of data, and it gives them native SSD speeds in a virtual machine. It also dramatically speeds up solution build and rebuilds, and program installations are super fast. First launches after boot are immediate, and software installs so quickly that they don't even realize it'll be done.
"...Further this thing is noticeably fast. There’s a noticeable speed up subjectively throughout Windows but more importantly Visual Studio flies on..." Read more
"...CPU lane (PCIe X16 slot 2) and this thing took off - the speed boost is only noticeable when moving large amounts of random files..." Read more
"...Second Key Point:The 900P is significantly faster at I/O/Latency intensive tasks. Think virtualization, SQL Servers, and certain IDE’s...." Read more
"...Both SSDs are fast, but the Optane is faster, especially on this machine where it interfaces directly with the CPU while the EVO 970 suffers..." Read more
Customers are satisfied with the quality of the computer drive. They mention that it has an excellent build, with great iops and read and write speeds. The SSD is blazing fast and works as intended. Customers also say that it makes a great ZFS SLOG and works perfectly as the boot disk for a Windows 7 computer.
"...Build quality: Excellent and larger than expected (but low profile) - heat dissipation premium..." Read more
"Excellent SSD. Worth to buy it if you don't mind its price. I have two Optane SSDs (one 900P 280GB U2, and one 905P 380GB M.2)...." Read more

"...I finally splurged on this thing and it is simply amazing. Yesterday I ran 2 virus scans at the same time while continuing to work normally...." Read more
Customers are mixed about the value of the computer drive. Some mention that it's fast but not worth the price, while others say that it is a little on the expensive side.
"...Either way I would say its the all around best hard drive to have. Worth the cost, 100%." Read more
"...performance is unnecessary for all but the most niche users, cost is still very high relative to other ssd's..." Read more

So aside from being an exciting new technology what does this drive buy you? Almost unlimited endurance, you’ll upgrade to something new before the memory cells on this expire and if you have a write heavy workload like I do it’s nice to have the peace of mind. It’s also great that there’s zero performance degradation over time and it performs just as well full as it does empty. Something many people forget about SSDs is that full ones can have awful performance characteristics especially if they rely on emulated SLC caches for writes as most newer TLC and now QLC SSDs do.
Further this thing is noticeably fast. There’s a noticeable speed up subjectively throughout Windows but more importantly Visual Studio flies on this drive. Even on high end NVMe SSDs Visual Studio would still choke for me from time to time. However this drive has eliminated that problem. As a software developer who often works from home this is a big deal. It saves me time and I don’t have to spend as much time waiting for Visual Studio to load files, index files, etc. It also dramatically speeds up solution build and rebuilds. Further it helps speed up virtual machines.
Is this drive necessary? If you can use it for your workload, maybe, otherwise absolutely not, it’s a luxury item. Spend the money on better GPU/CPU if you’re a gamer first and foremost. But if you’re a performance enthusiast like me, if you enjoy playing with new memory technology and you can afford an awesome toy that will make your computer noticeably faster I highly recommend it. It won’t provide you the same speed boost that switching from HDD to SSD did, but it will be way more noticeable than the switch from SATA SSD to NVMe was.
Then I switch to the CPU lane (PCIe X16 slot 2) and this thing took off - the speed boost is only noticeable when moving large amounts of random files (i.e. picture & icon collections, movie & music files, programs that pull from multiple sources like CAD assemblies, video and file compression is a dream...). The smaller and more scattered - the better my 900p handled the job. *I strongly recommend you look up 3D Xpoint technology before purchase*
>Build quality: Excellent and larger than expected (but low profile) - heat dissipation premium
>Speed: really does depend on what you're moving (servers will benefit; photo & video a plus) - but single files and small programs are not a factor; the linear speed of my Samsung 960 is better until I pull my photo & music collection
>Reliability: no problems at this point (make sure you download the Intel NVMe drivers - Feb 2018); initially my drive captured the Samsung driver I had previously installed?
>Price: I'm good - a lot lower today than the release of few years ago; plus with everything moving to 4K - it was time to get real about storage speed (IMO)... Hope this helps
Cons: runs very hot, performance is unnecessary for all but the most niche users, cost is still very high relative to other ssd's
Ultimately I returned it in favor of a standard PCIe NVMe drive and I can't tell the difference in day-to-day activities such as gaming and 3D rendering. For specific use cases it can't be beat, but those are Enterprise data-center type things that I have no need for.

This review is merely a comparison of the following drives:
Intel 900P 280GB version
Samsung 870 Pro 512GB
SanDisk (Now Western Digital) Ultra 3D NAND 1TB
2 KEY POINTS:
Intel 900P drives can handle over 5 Petabytes (or 5000+TB) of writes to the 280GB drive, and over 8 Petabytes ( 8000+TB) of writes to the 480GB version.
Samsung 870 Pro drives can handle 600TB of write endurance.
SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD 1TB can handle 400TB of write endurance.
Second Key Point:
The 900P is significantly faster at I/O/Latency intensive tasks. Think virtualization, SQL Servers, and certain IDE’s. It excels at the following VMware ESX or Vmware Workstations and many Integrated development environments. (Programmers can make HUGE gains with Intel’s Optane SSDs)
The Intel Optane 900P drive can handle up to: 550000 IOPS --This includes random read/write
The 970 Pro Nvme can handle up to: 15000 IOPS Read and 55000 IOPS write at a Queue Depth of 1. But 370,000 IOPS Read/500,000 IOPS write at a Queue Depth of 4
The SanDisk Ultra 3D 1TB can handle up to 95000/Read 84000/write IOPS, but, its less.
The Intel 900P is a very fast drive, however sequential QD32T1 performance is not quite as fast as Samsung's Flagship. With that being said, if your application requires low latency, lots of drive writes, and high IOPS, this drive is a big BUY.
