I decided to undervolt and slightly overclock the card in AMD WattMan (Google for online guides) and it now comfortably holds a boost speed of 1,500MHz if called upon to do so. Default settings saw the boost clock sagging to around 1,300MHz under sustained heavy loads before, so this is quite an improvement. VRAM is also overclocked from 800 to 925MHz, and total power consumption has only risen by around 10%.
FYI, this gave a 15% FPS boost in Furmark GPU stress test with only around a 7°C increase in GPU temperature. It's still well within safe limits in a well ventilated case with an ambient temperature of 25°C.
In this state of tune, the card beats a GTX1080 in many of the games I play, so that's why £270 seemed like a very reasonable price to me. YMMV depending upon which specific games you have in your library as games optimised for Nvidia will often give the GTX1080 a healthy lead.
DiRT Rally runs at 1920x1080 with the Ultra graphics preset and highest antialiasing setting (8f16x EQAA) at a minimum framerate of 82FPS leaving sufficient headroom to Vsync at 72FPS for silky smooth performance.
F1 2018 also runs at 1920x1080 with the Ultra High graphics preset and highest antialiasing setting (TAA) sufficiently fast to Vsync at 72FPS.
Project Cars will happily Vsync at 60FPS under even the most demanding situations (Thunderstorm) with DS4X antialiasing and all other graphics settings maxed out if Detailed Grass and Particle Density are lowered from Ultra to High.
Project Cars 2 performs similarly with antialiasing set to MSAA=Medium.
Of course, enabling Vsync in your games can also reduce power consumption as the graphics card isn't wasting its time generating frames that you simply can't make use of on a fixed framerate monitor, so the games listed above only have the Vega 56 averaging around 100 to 130W rather than the expected 230W in its mildly overclocked state.
Maximum power consumption with default voltages and clocks is around 210W, so please do make sure that your current PSU is up to the job of running this as well as everything else in your system with power to spare.
Bear in mind that you'll need a fairly beefy CPU and fast DDR4 RAM in order to avoid bottlenecking the RX Vega 56. My Intel i5-6600K overclocked to 4.5GHz paired with 16GB of DDR4-3333 RAM seems to give it plenty of room to stretch its legs in all of the games I play.
Did I say the fans are reasonably quiet? The card doesn't run them at all until the GPU hits 55°C, so it's silent for general usage. They run at typically 1,200 to 1,600RPM in the games I play so are audible, but not annoyingly so. It's certainly MUCH quieter than the single fan blower solutions on the reference style RX Vega 56s.
In short, I'm delighted with this graphics card and would recommend it to anyone in need of some extra horsepower, especially if you're not afraid to use AMD WattMan to help get the most out of it.
