Comprehensive Cooling
ROG Zenith II Extreme employs large VRM heatsinks that strike the right balance between surface area and mass. The chipset heatsink integrates an active-cooling solution, helping to keep the underlying silicon stay cool under pressure, and also employs the same airflow to chill the SoC VRM. The extra-large heatsinks also cover multiple M.2 slots, meaning Zenith II Extreme is fully armed to provide the best foundation for extreme PC systems – enabling higher performance at lower temperatures.
Quad-Channel ECC memory
Its quad-channel memory controller supports up to 256 GB of DDR4 memory across eight slots and infused with proprietary memory trace layout tweaks that improve signal integrity and mitigate noise, ASUS OptiMem III allows memory kits to run at lower latencies and reduced voltages while operating at higher frequencies.
Maxed-out Storage with Ultrafast Transfer Speed
Supports up to five full PCIe 4.0 bandwidth M.2 drives for maxed-out storage. Two ride the ROG DIMM.2 module, next to the memory slots, and support drives up to 110m. There are another two slots under the aluminum heatsink cover, with a fifth one at the rear of the board. Laying the foundation for the ultrafast transfer speeds needed to support machine-learning algorithms and drive higher-resolution game textures.
Ultrafast Networking
- Wi-Fi6 (AX200) include incredible transfer speeds of up to 2.4 Gbps and optimized performance on crowded networks
- 10 Gbps onboard Ethernet
- latest Intel Ethernet (I211-AT) for faster, smoother gaming

It's now been nearly 30 days since upgrading my PC with this board among other components. I have had Zero issues so far. it's been very stable. Only issue I've had is trying to update the BIOS with Armory Crate and the BIOS saying its not a proper BIOS file. It's possible I already have the latest BIOS and i am sitting here trying to update a file thats already updated. Either way it runs great, I was just trying to update to the latest update.
2. The ASMedia SATA controller is garbage. If you reboot the system, the BIOS won’t detect drives attached to it. You have to power down the system, then power it back on. Once on, the controller occasionally resets the ports attached to it, causing IO errors. The board has eight SATA ports. Four go TRX40 chipset and work fine. The other four go to the ASMedia controller and are very unreliable. I had to hook up my extra SATA drives to my LSI RAID controller because basic tasks (installing an OS, booting, mounting drives) was too unreliable with the ASMedia ports.
3. You get the same technical support from ASUS as a budget builder. Despite costing more than most ASUS workstation motherboards, you get the same level of support with this board that you get with a $90 board. If you choose a cheaper ASUS workstation board, you get pro support.
4. The ASUS ROG forum sucks. I tried to register and had to wait to be approved for weeks. Despite being run by ASUS employees, apparently getting their customers help is not one of their priorities.
5. The BIOS lacks many features. So, despite costing more than ASUS workstation boards, this board’s BIOS has fewer features. I initially installed two GPUs in the system, but the BIOS doesn’t let you choose a primary GPU. The wrong GPU took over the display, making PCIe passthrough to a VM impossible. The BIOS also doesn’t let you manage boot entries. If you want to delete stale entries, you have to boot into an OS and use a tool within the OS.
6. Despite Threadripper CPUs supporting 72 PCIe lanes, this board only has four PCIe slots.
7. There’s no serial header on the motherboard.
8. The system takes forever to do a cold boot. This is more of an issue with Threadripper than this board though.
I bought this because I wanted the best. But this isn’t the best – just the most expensive. I probably should have gotten an ASUS WS C422 SAGE as it has two 10-gigabit onboard Intel ports and costs $150 less.

Some cons: The m.2 slot on the backside of the motherboard is kind of useless since it uses pcie lanes from the sata connector lines. Not a fan of asus bios interface it can be a buggy mess in there and I generally stay out of it unless necessary but that's my opinion. Also not a fan of the asus software in general and you're better off sticking with windows updates for drivers.
I run a 3960x Amd threadripper
4 m.2 ssds with two in the expansion card
128gb ram
Just a heads up for folks: The box it comes in doesn't have a seal and it might appear like its been opened already but I guess that's normal the motherboard also isnt in a sealed bag it sits in the box under a plastic cover. I thought that I recieved a refurbished package at first but i found other reviews on memory express saying the same thing so I guess its normal.
