Comprehensive Cooling

ROG Zenith II Extreme employs large VRM heatsinks that strike the right balance between surface area and mass. The chipset heatsink integrates an active-cooling solution, helping to keep the underlying silicon stay cool under pressure, and also employs the same airflow to chill the SoC VRM. The extra-large heatsinks also cover multiple M.2 slots, meaning Zenith II Extreme is fully armed to provide the best foundation for extreme PC systems – enabling higher performance at lower temperatures.

Quad-Channel ECC memory

Its quad-channel memory controller supports up to 256 GB of DDR4 memory across eight slots and infused with proprietary memory trace layout tweaks that improve signal integrity and mitigate noise, ASUS OptiMem III allows memory kits to run at lower latencies and reduced voltages while operating at higher frequencies.

The best sTRX4 board at the time of writing.
4 Stars
The best sTRX4 board at the time of writing.
As a few quick caveats, I'm waiting until at least October to put my system together, to see what happens with Threadripper Genesis Peak. Also, it's possible my board may have been damaged in transit due to a 4.5" gap in the shipping box, and nothing filling the space (the packer's fault, not Asus). Therefore, don't expect to hear "Works great!", but I will go into detail on some of the more interesting and confusing things that I think are definitely worth knowing.M.2 Drive Slots: This board accommodates FIVE M.2 drives. That is A LOT. In order to use them though, you're going to make some effort, and do some modding. Due to the fact that this is a PCIe 4.0 board, and PCIe 4.0 SSD's can get very toasty, every manufacturer either expects you to use a heat sink, or includes one on their drives. If it's an actual heat sink, you will need to remove it, and should also peel off any labeling to get it down to the chips. The board includes thermal pads and heat sinks for all of them, so you typically can't use any they come with.M.2 Drive Slot Locations: As for the actual locations of the drive slots, two are found by removing the heat sink shroud around the PCIe slots, and a third is on the back of the board in roughly the same spot. Worth noting, if you use the one on the back, you'll need to flip the switch on the board to enable it, and it will also disable SATA6G_E1-E4 ports (meaning you'll have 4 functional SATA ports). The location of the remaining two drives is via the DIMM.2 card, which in spite of the manual saying it's sold separately, is included with the board.Powering the Board: The board has two PCS connectors (EATX12V_1 & EATX12V_2), and what I've confirmed with ASUS support to be a 6-pin PCI-e connector between them, confusingly labeled "EATX12V_3" for additional power support. There is also an EZ_PLUG connector by the PCIe slots, which is an equally confusing name for "plug a Molex cable in here".Accessories: You have literally all the accessories you should need to connect up everything to this board, unless it comes standard with a PSU. Of major note is the Fan Card, which will typically mount where you would mount a 2.5/3.5" drive, and will allow you to work with considerably more fans. You also get a nice little USB drive instead of a CD/DVD for all the drivers and whatnot, a nice external antenna for your WiFi, and even have SATA cables with very nice right-angle connectors.Packing: There is some very good and very bad here, and I'm unsure whether it's standard, or if I have other issues going on. My retail box was not shrink wrapped, and had no seals holding it shut or to indicate having been opened, so I'm uncertain if it had a prior owner (all the accessory bags appear to be unopened). The box opens very easily, with only a small tab towards the top to keep it from fully opening on its own, after which the side slides open about 45 degrees. The board is loosely covered by a plastic topper so that it doesn't move around, but it's loose enough that debris can get in during shipping. The board itself was not in a sealed anti-static bag, which I consider a grave sin, but rather, just sitting in a cardboard tray with the plastic topper on it. Of note, the accessories live under the board tray in several organized compartments, which was honestly quite well done.Misc. complaints: There is more than one piece of clear plastic film on the shiny bits. You just don't see the other because the blue tab isn't in view, which I feel was a mistake on Asus part. Also, while they do include a full copy of the manual, it's small enough that it won't do you much good, so just do yourself a favor and download the PDF ahead of time (zoom is your friend).Final thoughts: This is an amazing board for a steep price. It has all the bells and whistles, and I believe it will be very solid and get you by for many years, due to an abundance of power delivered to the board, ridiculous amount of M.2 ports (you've got 4 SATA ports as well), and eight RAM slots. The manual is a bit foggy on some details, but it lists pinouts for literally everything, which is of great help. My only real severe complaint with this board is the lack of protection of the board itself, which I can only assume was to bolster presentation value. Had the board even been in a snap-close clamshell of some sort, that also would have been much better. With the imminent release of Genesis Peak, it's hard to say what any newer boards may include on them, but this one should be compatible, and most likely will set a very high bar for them.

Had some terrible issues with a previous motherboard on this AMD trx40 platform from a different manufacture(msi creator) so I grabbed this one while I sent it the other for Repairs. I am definitely going to keep this and sell the other one. I actually find the lcd screen on the front very useful, its great for debugging failed boots and overclocking memory since it gives the issue in plain english and an error code. I find the build quality to be excellent and it just looks good like it wasn't slapped together in a hurry. It has a metal back plate that makes it nice and solid as well. It is the most expensive motherboard on this platform and it shows. The m.2 ssd expansion card is a nice feature.

Some cons: The m.2 slot on the backside of the motherboard is kind of useless since it uses pcie lanes from the sata connector lines. Not a fan of asus bios interface it can be a buggy mess in there and I generally stay out of it unless necessary but that's my opinion. Also not a fan of the asus software in general and you're better off sticking with windows updates for drivers.

I run a 3960x Amd threadripper
4 m.2 ssds with two in the expansion card
128gb ram

Just a heads up for folks: The box it comes in doesn't have a seal and it might appear like its been opened already but I guess that's normal the motherboard also isnt in a sealed bag it sits in the box under a plastic cover. I thought that I recieved a refurbished package at first but i found other reviews on memory express saying the same thing so I guess its normal.
