My prior mouse was Logitech G Pro wired. After only a few years, the mouse began to have many problems. The biggest problem is the infamous Logitech double clicking. If you aren't familiar with what the double clicking problem is, it's exactly how you'd guess, a single click registers as two clicks. It's extremely frustrating. Other mice from other companies also have this double clicking issue and it seems to stem from issues regarding the switches and voltages. These issues starting springing up several years ago from manufacturers switching over to using inferior switches. Probably sourced from the same place. The other problems with the G Pro include faulty sensor (cursor having intermittent erratic movements) and faulty scroll wheel (scrolling jumping the other direction). As you can see, that mouse was really frustrating to use. That mouse was a no-go and I will try to avoid Logitech products from now on since their product longevity has taken a dive and is no longer what it used to be. Companies riding out their reputation despite their products falling in quality and still charging that premium reputation tax. You can look to certain car companies as an example.
As a result, I began looking for a replacement mouse with modularity. A mouse that I could easily disassemble and repair broken components. From my searching, the only company I found that makes these types of mice is ASUS. These mice quickly stood out to me, especially the Chakram and at that time upcoming Chakram X that I waited for. The ability to easily remove the magnetic mouse buttons and cover (these are transparent so you can customize the included blank badge with marker and see your illuminated design) to get access to the switches cannot be overstated. The Chakram X has compatibility with different switch types including both mechanical and optical so you can effortlessly switch out the switches as desired, to your desired switch to get the feel you want. If a switch becomes faulty, double clicking or else, it can be easily replaced. If you want to clean the mouse, it's never been easier since you can disassemble Chakram and really get a good, thorough clean in. The Chakram mouse is designed to last because of this genius modular design and philosophy. Compare that to other mice designed with the planned obsolescence philosophy and made to be tossed in the landfill after a few years to get consumers to purchase replacement mice more often since those mice aren't designed to be easily disassembled and repaired by the user. Sure, the price is high as far as mice go but when you consider product lifespan, Chakram should easily outlast the several other mice you'd end up buying instead.
Features: As far as features go in mice, the Chakram X really is at the top. It would be easier to go to the main product page since I wouldn't be able to list them all here comprehensively so I'll try to gloss over the highlights instead. The Chakram has 3 different connectivity modes: wired, wireless RF, and bluetooth. The cord is removable, obviously for wireless mode. The battery life is superb and the mouse quickly charges. Chakram supports Qi charging so you can charge wirelessly off a Qi charging mouse pad. The mouse has many features and the Armoury Crate software gives you a lot of customizability and options for that. This includes the LED lighting which you can customize. I like the battery mode lighting option. Chakram lights change to red when it's <20% to let you know to charge it. If you want a feature rich mouse, then the Chakram X is your mouse.
Chakram has 4 side buttons and a joystick that can act in both digital and analog mode. All the buttons can be mapped however you want, for each application, in different profiles, including macros which I haven't fiddled around with yet. Perfect for both general productivity work and gaming. Chakram has DPI On-The-Scroll. Hold and release the DPI button and you enter into On-The-Scroll mode. In this mode, you can fine tune and adjust the perfect DPI by using scroll wheel to adjust the DPI and moving the mouse at the same time. Press the DPI button to lock in that DPI. It's really an awesome feature. One thing I was interested in when looking for a mouse was free scroll wheel mode. Chakram doesn't have that. But I'm not sure if that would even be considerable so it isn't a downside. The mouse specs for maximum DPI and polling rate are insane. Longevity, durability, and reliability has yet to be tested since I've only had the mouse for 2-3 months but with the component modularity and perceptible high quality components (cutting edge sensors and switches) the Chakram should be expected to have an exceptional product lifespan. Chakram is big so it fills my hand nicely and feels solid. It's heavier than other mice so your movements have to be more intentional to move it, meaning it's more accurate for FPS games. I can see lighter mice overshooting their intended movement. I mean really as ASUS's flagship mouse, it's a top-of-the-line mouse and I highly recommend it. It's an end game mouse that you buy and can forget about every other mouse, which is what I was looking for.
It's modular, you can just remove and replace any part of the thing easily.
Works Wireless, Wired, and for some odd reason even Bluetooth, lol don't know why people still use Bluetooth and the performance isn't game level responsive but it's nice that it exists for the right devices.
The analog isn't legendary or anything but it works and is detected by games, especially if you set it up as a controller device in steam. Then it works with literally anything. But even if you don't it can be set to use analog to keys... So it can emulate keyboard button presses which is so badass!.. this was made with clear attention to detail, lots of respect for that.
My only complaint is I can't turn off the palm light when my laptop is off, it stays on as long as the mouse is plugged in or charging etc... to show the battery level
.... which is incredibly bright. I just covered it with electrical tape. But not worth reducing the rating because it's honestly a great mouse. My current favorite.
HOW'S THE THUMBSTICK CONTROL SCHEME?
Is managing both look and move on the mouse confusing? Surprisingly, it feels very intuitive to me. I love it for FF14, but don't think it works for fast-twitch games like FPS.
Replacing WASD with the thumbstick (and putting skills on the keyboard) works great for me in FF14. After using the Chakram for a few weeks, I can't see myself ever going back to 12 button MMO mice like the Naga Pro or Aerox 9 wireless. I find the Chakram easier, more intuitive, and more enjoyable to use. I also love that the Chakram let's me play good chunks of FF14 without touching a keyboard.
It's a hard pass for me when it comes to fast-paced games like competitive FPS or any arena FPS. First, some common mouse maneuvers feel very awkward...like moving left while swiping right and lifting off. Second, it throws off my aim just enough to miss headshots. Obviously it doesn't come close to WASD with an ultralight FPS mouse, but I think it's solid for games like Cyberpunk.
ADAPTING TO THE THUMBSTICK CONTROL SCHEME
Changing from WASD to the thumbstick control scheme was a lot easier than I expected. It felt really weird for 30 minutes then it started to click. It was 3 days before it felt like second nature...not bad considering it took me about 2 weeks to get used to 12 button MMO mice.
THE CHAKRAM'S THUMBSTICK IMPLEMENTATION
The Chakram's joystick implementation is the bare minimum and that's it.
Most importantly, the placement could be a problem for some. To reach it with 19x10 hands, I need to palm grip or hold it at an angle with relaxed claw grip. That doesn't bother me, but I wouldn't recommend the Chakram if you have smaller than average hands. MZ1-style swappable shells to adjust your grip would've been nice at this price, but instead all you get are some interchangeable thumbsticks that don't help.
The joystick action is rough on both copies I've had. It snags and needs a jostle to get it moving again sometimes. It was so bad on my first copy that I returned it.
No complaints about the joystick's analog mode, but I had to use the compatibility mode to change R/L to strafe R/L in FF14. It's 4-directional so you can't even move diagonally! It's not a dealbreaker for me...but the $50-on-prime-day Razer Tartarus doesn't have this problem.
Side button placement is ok imo. I can reach 2 buttons while my thumb is on the stick (scroll click and I can squeeze the furthest back button with my palm). Just enough for sprint and jump. There are enough leftover buttons for essential FF14 commands so I don't need my keyboard for a good part of the game. To be fair, that's all I hoped for.
CORNER CUTTING
The Chakram feels like a sum of econo-fixes priced like it's the only game in town. It feels like almost every single issue was fixed by making an inteliigent cost-effective compromise. I'd say ROG did a good job of that...for a bleeding edge mouse selling for $80. But that's not the case and I can't stress enough how much it adds up. Btw if you're picky about QC like button clicks and shell sturdiness, this is probably a hard pass.
For example:
- Joystick is strictly 4-directional in compatibility mode. Lacks 8-directional, which competitors have. Makes some games feel like you're playing on an 8-bit Nintendo.
- Dumpster-tier QC:
- When bottoming out M1 and M2 slightly too hard which is unavoidable when using the thumbstick, there's a second louder clicking sound from the switch crunching into the shell. Literally would fail QC on a $10 mouse you get at a drug store.
- Joystick movement is rough and snags badly on a regular basis. It makes a light cracking sound when I give it a light jostle to get it moving again. A tiny bit better on my second copy.
- Side flex and shell creaking for a mouse this weight is worse than some of the worst quality 50-60g ultralights
- M1/M2 side wobble is bad...makes noises louder than the switch clicks. It's magnified a lot by joystick usage too...just feels really cheap.
- One of the side button switches on my first copy would've definitely failed QC on any modern product.
- Profile swaps can't be mapped to buttons. Only has app-based profile swapping which is very slow and very unreliable. Really hurts the Chakram as a media pc mouse.
- No scroll tilt
- No layer shifting (G-shift, Hypershift)
SUMMARY
The Chakram X is an entry-level thumbstick-mouse being sold at a premium price.
It does get some things right. Ignoring the joystick, it has a very comfortable and safe ergo shape, joystick works well for shortcuts, carries its 127g as well as a G502, the 114 hour battery life is in legit Logitech hours, software let's you assign WIN key combos, it's fast waking off sleep, and the button mappings kick in right away after wake.
If you can look past all its major issues to view the Chakram as a novel peripheral, I'd say it's very good and even awesome depending on your use case. If ROG invested in the bare minimum like 8-directional compatibility mode and profile swapping to catch up with their competitors, I could see this being a compelling option despite the embarrassingly poor quality.
4 stars mostly for the thumbstick even though the Chakram makes me feel like I'm getting shortchanged by ROG in a reasonable but calculated way.
Top reviews from other countries
Coupled with the right mouse pad, I finally found the best mouse that works for me.
But there's also thing I think could be done better. There's a small amount of play on the mouse clic . The mouse itself is on the heavy side and take some getting used to.
Also I don't really find myself using the joystick often for 2 main reasons first the joystick is kinda too far in the front of the mouse, second reason there's not many integration for the joystick so its not that usefull.
Buttom line I really enjoy using this mouse but not the way i was expecting tu use it, still its a great mouse just wish it was cheaper.
