5.0 out of 5 starsONE GLARING ISSUE: But Pro Video/Photo users might find great for remote production.
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2018
UPDATE: First the annoyance. The key cap for F10 keeps coming off. Often times when the cover is opened after the laptop has been in the Alienware sleeve and that is inside a double-padded Courier-style bag, the key will have popped up and need to be reset. I've taken Macro photos of both the key cap back and the keyboard switch where it seats and can see no damage or missing bits. But it is REALLY annoying and spoils the experience of having an otherwise excellent piece of luggable technology. After searching I see key caps on Alienware's products are a problem are a problem for others, but I imagine some of that is because it can be a great gaming machine. I don't know if buying a replacement key-cap will solve the issue. I actually comes loose while the cover is down, not just from pressing it. Indeed the keyboard gets little use as my setup is such that I use a separate Logitech USB keyboard and mouse. But I need to use F9 and F10 on the laptop keyboard to adjust brightness.

Original Review: Original rating still holds. I got this machine not for gaming but for remote on-location HD video production, editing, and rendering. Primary requirements were GPU and CPU performance and software compatibility. So far this machine has performed very well. I was concerned about and on the lookout for any issues with the display, critical in my work, that appeared in at least one review. I haven't yet seen any dead pixels. I needed a machine with an IPS display so that the screen could be viewed by more than one person, thus from oblique angles, with minimal darkening or color shift of the image. The display in the machine I received is excellent for my needs.

There was a mention in one of the reviews about unsatisfactory color on the display. After considerable testing that is most certainly NOT THE CASE with the display in my machine. The display is excellent and color accurate. Read on. . . Consistency and accuracy of color, brightness, tonality, and nuance are critical in my professional work. I use a professional colorimeter-based display calibration system (DataColor's SPYDER product [ASIN:B00UBSL3L6 Datacolor Spyder5ELITE - Designed for Professional Photographers (S5EL100)] to calibrate all my displays on all my systems to the same viewing standard regardless of the hardware. This is a hardware and software solution to calibrate monitors on different systems to a fixed setting (determined by user requirements) so that the images displayed are as identical as possible. The precision colorimeter sensor measures the color output and brightness of the display across the full spectrum of displayable colors. The display in my Alienware laptop matches the displays on my large workstation monitors in a side-by-side comparison.

I have run FurMark benchmarks on the machine, watching the CPU/GPU temp rise and then hearing the fans kick in. For a portable production system on a budget I think this will do the job. I'll update the review again if there are issues or Alienware/Dell steps up to this problem.

1.0 out of 5 starsMore errors than anything I ever owned in my life. Not recommended at ALL
Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2018
So I bought this some months ago, and I've been dealing with errors pretty much all the time. Before buying, search in google for alienware problems, you'll get more results than you could ever think of. For every problem I had (which is a lot), there was at least 10 posts of people who got the same or similar issues. I don't remember all I went through, but the most important and recent ones are: 1. keyboard lights sometimes stop working, give errors, can't be customized, etc. I had to search everywhere, reinstall the command center, restart the computer and after hours and hours of work, get it to work again. I still get errors sometimes, and I can only customize it when i restart my computer, so you can see that I didn't even resolve the issue.
And 2., which is the reason why I'm doing this (because I'm tired of this defective product), I was using the computer today, so I muted it for a while and went to do something else. Then I came back, continued using it, and when I put the sound back in, I got an incredibly loud sound out. My heart was beating fast as hell. I was completely baffled by it. Then I lowered the sound to the minimum and I could still hear it. So I closed everything and restarted the computer. After that, the loud noises were gone, but I still had distortion and constant popping sound on the left speaker. So I opened 20 forum pages again, and started to try to solve the problem. I installed the default audio drivers, which made all the noises go away, but my left speaker is now dead.
So as you can see, in the end I'm able to fix the problems, but not completely. I'm left with a zombie computer. I advise you to not buy this product and I never will again.
Oh, by the way, the computer is powerful. It's a gamer laptop, and that is why it costs almost $1800. That's not important, just go ahead and buy a similar product for the same cost that doesn't have errors everywhere.

Well there are so many manufacturers out there in the gaming laptop world it’s hard to choose, let me help you make that decision!

This laptop has unbeatable quality and manufacturing build fit, feel and finish! AAA

the Led lights are mind blowing and no one does it to this level

Easy of modification and upgrades AAA

ZERO performance stripping bloatware

Backed by Dell warranty and customer service

The power of the gtx 1070 blows my mind, I’m coming from a sli Titan x pascal on an i76950x and I’m not kidding you the difference is minimal it actually hurts me. Obviously the Titan and sli is better but just 1 GPU is more than half the cost of this entire laptop.

There are other manufacturers with specs higher But it’s unmatched in quality 110% go buy your 3”thick Clervo, xotic pc that weighs 11pounds and has a power brick the size of a Nike shoe box!

This laptop is super slim, sleek and sexy and I 100% have zero regrets I’m locked in dell/Alienware laptops for life

Very impressed with shipping packaging and care by dell

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, not too big and heavy as expected, looks nice and premium, can have dead pixels on the screen so check it carefully

Pros:
Incredible laptop, it is NOT that thick and heavy as you might expect, very powerful and in my opinion it just looks beautiful. Good battery life. All games on ultra. Screen looks pretty, but:

Cons:
My laptop had 2-4 neighboring dead pixels and I found it a bit late, so carefully check screen. I put 4 and not 5 only because of this, cause in any case - it is a new product and it is not cheap.

2.0 out of 5 stars Price is higher than the home page of Dell

The computer itself is fine. But the price on Dell’s website is lower. And they have more discounts and reward. But I have already opened the computer so I cannot return it.
When you buy it, make sure to check the price on Dell’s website!

3.0 out of 5 stars Heat issues, scarehouse deals.
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018

I would like to give this thing 5 stars because it really was a killer desktop replacement for me, but not out of the box. I'm very patient, and this thing has known heat issues. Instead of returning it, I had a dell technician come to my house to replace the heat sink assembly and apply new TIM. It ran beautifully after that, but paired with the other issue of me receiving the wrong SKU from warehouse deals, I just couldn't find myself being happy with my $1700 purchase. Might be spending more to get the new Zephyrus M.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic and beautiful gaming beast
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2017

Absolutely fantastic and beautiful gaming beast! The build quality is great with no design issues, mine has very low light bleed (bottom left corner). I have the 7700HQ 256/1TB 1070 GSync model. The display is at 60hz (not 60 or 120hz) and is beautiful. I had the 17 R4 with the 1440 120hz panel and it looked washed out. This one is perfect. If I want to really push the FPS I can plug in an external monitor. Keyboard is best of any laptop with 2.2mm travel. Trackpad is responsive but wish it was a little larger. I love the tactile feel of the 2 buttons on the trackpad. Sound quality is full and loud! Only complaint is I wish it had a SD card reader a some more USB 3.0 ports on each side.

Works wonderful. Have been using it since two years now except a little heavy to carry. It is wonderful to work on and can run multiple design software's together. Getting the right bag pack/ laptop bag is very important.I didn't customize with touch screen as I don't use it or require but I works just great even without a touch screen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing But a Headache
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2018

I bought this as a gift for someone and it was a huge mistake. I talked him into switching from a Mac to this device instead of purchasing another Apple computer. Big mistake. This computer has been nothing but a problem. The hard drive randomly disconnects leaving only the SSD for usage. The sound for games does not work while the Alienware Sound Center is running. We have to close the Alienware Sound Center and restart the game to get any sound. The track pad randomly disconnects. Now, the entire Alienware Alien FX system stopped working. None of the keyboard lights, track pad lighting, or side lighting works. I called dell support for this issue and they updated the Bios hoping that it fixed the hard drive issue. They uninstalled and reinstalled the Command Center multiple times and tried various troubleshooting steps to fix the lighting and sound issues. These were all ultimately unsuccessful and they suspect its a motherboard issue. We now have to send this computer in for a hardware replacement after owning it for only 9 months. The Mac that this replaced had been running without issue for 4 years. I regret ever switching over. The amount of time, energy, maintenance, and frustration that has gone into such a young "high performance" computer is obscene.

Good choice for light gamers, it comes with no warranty and it was written on warranty that the warranty expired, means that someone use it or maybe subscribe the validity of warranty.
