Not too long ago I purchased an MSI GP72 series thin and light 17" gaming laptop and was extremely satisfied with it, excellent graphics in a portable package. I later purchased the Oculus Rift and found that my beloved laptop barely missed the compatibility specs to run VR - I tell this story because it led me into the adventure of a lifetime...Building my very own desktop with the new AMD Ryzen 7 1800x. I was about to purchase a motherboard from a competitor because it was so highly rated, but a friend who recently did his build (and inspired me to do mine) told me that if he could do it over again, he would have chosen MSI over the giga-competitor. That's some of the best advice I have ever received...

Installation: I'm computer savvy but it has been over 10 years since I built a computer, so I was nervous - but following the included quick guide, I had installed my Ryzen 7 1800x, and two eight gigabyte sticks of crucial vengence memory, and before I knew it I was placing the board into the case (mid tower CoolerMaster MasterBox 5). A few turns of a screw driver later and I'm closing up our patient and getting ready for first boot. Cross your fingers!

First boot: AMAZING! I cannot believe that I nailed the installation on the first shot. The computer posts and the bios pops up - and let me tell you the Bios is unlike any I have ever seen before. The interface is graphical and it really is way more intuitive than I expected. It even offers an automatic Overclock feature that left my jaw agape.

Pros: Rugged design, simple installation, and extremely easy and intuitive bios and features. I had windows installed in under 10 minutes.

Cons: None, except of course the new x470 is coming soon, and I'm so impressed with this motherboard I will undoubtedly buy the next gen when it arrives. Also, in order to be entered into a longshot sweepstakes to probably not win more MSI products, according to the official rules, I have to make the following untrue statement: I am writing this review to enter into the MSI Reward Program. Now that I've said that, I can tell you honestly and with my whole heart that I mean everything I have said about this motherboard, and in fact had to come back an edit it to include that statement. It's really stupid, and it's not true, nor have I been influenced in any way by promotion or any compensation of any kind. - but maybe I'll get lucky and win a stuffed animal dragon! lol

Final thoughts: I'm a big MSI fan, and they've earned it through great customer service and warenty and just overall feature and performance of every one of their products that I have used so far. Do yourself a favor, and even if you choose a different model, choose MSI - a decision you will never regret, and that's my word.

***TDLR*** Spent hours diagnosing issue only to single it down to the main board. Going to Intel as motherboard support for Ryzen is too limited and risky.
I spent many hours putting my system together trying to get it perfect. I am absolutely disappointed that I couldn't take advantage of Ryzen. Really wanted to utilize it especially for my work.

So building the PC was straight forward. I did a lot of research and preparation before hand. Already knew the on-board graphics wouldn't work without a proper CPU. Checked and verified compatibility on the compatibility list and the sort. Installation went smoothly for both Windows and Linux.

It wasn't until one of the days I was running Windows updates after the new install that I had noticed the screen was black but the system was still running. I didn't think much of it and just restarted the system. Everything worked fine for a day. I was able to install applications, browse the internet, and run a few benchmarks. It wasn't until the next day that the problems had started. I was continuing setup of the system until the mouse froze for a second and then the screen goes black with the system remaining on but unresponsive. Now prior to this, I had upgraded the BIOS with being that the latest updates was supposed to bring better stability and compatibility with things like ram to the board. Other than that, everything was stock. I never overclocked and very few settings were changed. I only enabled SVM for virtualization on the processor.

Going through troubleshooting steps, I determined that it wasn't Windows as there were no error logs and the same issue would happen in Linux. It wasn't the graphics card since I switched it with my old 8800GTS. (The card was stored in an anti-static bag while not in use.) I though maybe it was because I changed the BIOS so I reverted it back to the previous revision with no success. I tested the ram using memtest86 with no issues found. It wasn't the PSU as I swapped it with another one I had on hand. It wasn't overheating as I am using an H100i AIO with temps setting at 37C at the time of crashing. I monitored all temps when I was running more intensive tasks to ensure there was no overheating. There was no extensive testing as I had not had it long. I had also removed all other pci cards to ensure there was no hardware issue.

I am upgrading from a 1st gen i7 860 Lynfield and really though MSI would be a good choice as the board had lasted me this long. But I need something that will last me another 10 years. I don't wish to risk having to keep sending boards back because of these issues so I am switching back to Intel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overclocker, Great RGB Lighting, Great for Ryzen
Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2018

The media could not be loaded.
Technical:
Beautiful Motherboard and a pretty easy overclocker. My R5 1600 has had a fabulous time in this X370 board, and paired with a liquid cooler, I can push a little over 4.0ghz even with a Gen 1 Ryzen 5 1600 (about 4.2 max) [in case you don’t know, Gen 1 Ryzens are known to have trouble with single core OCing]. The M2 cooler is great, and I don’t actually mind t being by the PCIe slots, it doesn’t bother me. Otherwise, it only has 2 USB 2.0’s, 5 3.1’s, and a Type C. I’ve always liked MSI for giving better port to price ratio than Asus. I got this board in the Carbon Box for 125 new, and it beats any board for that price imo.

LED/Look:
Stunning. RGB lighting with 17 customizable effects on the MSI logo (bottom right), the GAMING PRO logo (top left), and two sides (top right and left). The Rainbow setting is my favorite, and more and more products are becoming compatible with Mystic Light, MSI’s RGB ecosystem. My InWin Polaris fans look great with the MoBo. I believe there are 4 to 5 4 pin fan headers, and obviously 3.0/2.0 and all the other necessary bells and whistles, so you’re set on ports (I doubt you’ll need any internal splitter).

Overall:
Great board, and easy to OC even for newcomers. If you are blinded by the RGB craze (like someone that’s definietly not me), and like MSI, this board is for you. X370 is pretty great for all Ryzen CPU’s

4.0 out of 5 stars Decided to not be an "Asus fanboy" this time after years of trouble. So far, so good.
Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2017
Verified Purchase
I chose this brand after seeing many positive reviews and after having issues with the last 3 or so higher-end Asus boards that were never fixed. (990fx had limited RAM QVL and did not actually support 32GB and speeds listed. The R.2.0 revision fixed this, but they never fixed their bios.) (939sli bad caps after 3 years) (939-e bricked after 1 year and chipset fan gave out before that). I see many people still frustrated over RAM not working at listed speeds and waiting (probably forever) on QVL/BIOS updates and could not find one and RAM guaranteed to run at 3200 so not going through another build like that. /rant

Pros:
- Board works with F4-3200C14D-16GTZKW RAM at the full speed. (QVL verified and from advise of one of the reviewers here) although, needs current version of bios to work.
- Just enough USB slots for what I need. Can always use a hub or something, but why pay double for a flashy board just for a few more.
- PS/2 port which made installing Win-7 easier. Background: Win7 will not recognize USB until drivers are installed so without a mouse/keyboard, you don't have any input until you do so. PS/2 will work for that purpose. My guess is MS is making it difficult for people since they want to continue pushing their ad/spyware infested windows 10.
- All drivers worked. No need to do lengthy troubleshooting and searching for others not on the disc.
- Clear instructions on hooking everything up.
- Plenty of room to install Noctura DH14 + mod kit CPU cooler.
- BIOS update to latest version without trouble.
- 6 SATA ports. Usually seen only 2 or 4 unless you got a higher end board with 6 or 8. Maybe times are changing.
Cons:
- Stock bios version was over 6 months old. Required updating to use RAM to full potential. I think they should at least ship with a current bios as I don't think it sat in the warehouse 6 months. Minor issue, and easily remedied, though.
- Takes a long time to POST. That was like my 990FX board, although this wasn't as bad. I don't know if there's a "fast boot" option or setting that mitigates this. This is also minor as I usually leave it on.
- USB 2.0 ports not working right with VMWare. Problem is some devices don't get recognized and can't connect them to VM. Still working on a fix for that.
- No optical audio out. I was used to this being standard on more expensive Asus boards, however I didn't see spending double to get it. I didn't even bother to look, which was foolish, however, the onboard audio still works satisfactorily.
- Too few cables/accessories included for full build. Probably standard for knocking 100 bucks off the price. I re-purposed the others, but others may want to know, it only comes with 2 SATA cables and no USB front/back plates.
- Clocking/tweaking unclear and not covered in instructions. I matched my ram to 14/14/14/34 with the "try it" mode, however it sets the voltage at 1.36 instead of 1.35 and I can't change it. I have excellent cooling so I tried and ran MEMTEST with no errors and it's been solid for a while. CPU clocking ("Game mode?") is vague. I turned it on/off without noticing a difference. The 1800x is already lightning fast and at 3700mhz right now. I would opt for more of an "energy saver" mode as I like a quiet PC that runs cool.
- Boot device priority unclear. I can't pick a specific device, only the type. Still got it working fairly quickly with default settings.
- Garbageware on the drivers CD. This seems to be typical with many brands/boards. I don't want some "audio control center" tray icon and several others. I just want the simple driver, please.

Other thoughts:
- Never tinkered with RGB lighting. Don't care for it. I know some people had trouble, but even if so, doesn't bother me.
- Good board to buy for a Ryzen build.
- Will work with Win/7 as long as you follow the guides commonly posted for ps/2. No need to slip-stream stuff like with ones with no port.
- To update bios, the folder structure from unzipping the file needs to be intact or it won't recognize it. Something that troubled me for a while, I figured I'd save someone the trouble who is reading this. e.g.: X:\biosversionfolder\bios.file instead of X:\bios.file (Don't update the bios unless you are having specific issues and it fixes that specific problem)
- CPU runs 36 degrees idle, 54 under full load with Noctura cooler and default fan settings and default CPU settings. (Probably plenty of room to overclock for those who wish to) No slot for second CPU fan, however one is labeled "pump fan". I'm guessing for water coolers. It's just a re-labeled chassis fan slot so I used it for one of the CPU fans.
- Superfluous hdmi/DVI ports on MB. Obviously it would be a huge waste to buy this MB for "gaming" without a hardware graphics card. Nobody is going to use these, right? What's the point here?

When I started building with the MSI Gaming Pro Carbon I was amazed, it looked very nice and with the insulators on multiple parts I felt safe that it would last. When I was building I used the manual that comes with and pleasantly found that everything that I needed to know was in there, it included multiple photos on how to properly plug in connectors and where you should put your ram for top performance. I would gladly recommend this to friends thanks to its nice manual building it was easy and painless. In terms of my expectations, this thing got them all. Thanks to the MSI Gaming app I could customize the LED’s that both surround and are on the motherboard, it looks amazing. It also has an app that keeps all of the MSI drivers and apps up to date. Additionally, the bios is very easy and gives lots of great information such as temperature. I was able to easily update the bios with a flash drive. On top of that the many fan and ram slots leave plenty of room for any upgrades I do in the future.

If you want speed in your storage devices, MSI includes M.2 and U.2 connectivity on the X370 XPower Gaming Titanium motherboard for transfer speeds approaching 32 Gb/s with two M.2 slots. One of the M.2 slots even has thermal pads for keeping the storage device cool, and a shield for protection from nearby random electromagnetic interference. If you are into virtual reality (VR) technology, MSI includes a VR Boost chip for a cleaner and stronger signal set to a USB port marked on the I/O backplate of the X370 motherboard. Using the MSI Gaming App loaded from the drivers/utilities software DVD, you can better fine tune the performance of your system for optimal VR experiences. Do you like to mod your case for that special lighting effect? MSI has provided a power point and the "RGB Mystic Light" feature with 17 illumination effects from a 16.8 million color palette, controlled from the MSI Gaming App. This lets you power those LED light strips and other RGB display effects without the need for a separate controller. MSI delivered a feature rich, performance orientated motherboard with the X370 XPower Gaming Titanium. With support for AMD Ryzen series and 7th Gen A-series/Athlon processors along with the ability to overclock DDR4 RAM to 3200+ frequencies, the MSI X370 is looking to be long-term solution for your rig.
The Live Update 6 program helps keep the MSI X370 motherboard applications current, which allowing features and performance to reach peak potential. The MSI Nahimic 2 app for example provides control of your speakers and microphone, and it even has a Sound Tracker for certain games for sound direction detection.
If you're concerned about all of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) prevalent in today’s society, the motherboard offers Steel Armor that protects your DRAM and PCIe not only from electrical overcurrent by adding extra ground points, but physical damage with a metal shield. They will serve to help reduce interfering signals, as well as provide a cleaner signal path for data. Although this price point places the motherboard at the higher end of offerings, the features and performance advantages it offers are well worth the expense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great board for my wants!

This motherboard has been a good investment. I use most of the onboard features quite often, especially the WiFi and Audio. I originally bought several other boards for the AM4 platform but none of them seemed to work 100% of the time. Unfortunately it was all down to faulty RAM but I couldn't figure that out until this board's POST code finally kept telling me it was bad. After replacement, everything was up and running stably and no problems! This board is completely overkill for my needs but my logic was to buy the newest board available due to past experiences with original AM4 motherboards having BIOS from March 2017 and difficulties flashing the BIOS due to the age and probably RAM. Some of the software is okay, but some of the MSI software takes a while to load when you start the application. 10-15 seconds to load an already running program is a little disappointing but not unforgivable. I probably will not overclock my CPU, sadly a waste of this boards capabilities, but that is my choice. Overall, this was a sound investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great board, especially for the price.

Update--3 Months In--
Despite my initial optimism about this board, I wished I had either gotten the B350 Tomahawk or a higher end option from another company. I had chosen the MSI because of past recommendations. The software and hardware combinations for this board often over rule or completely mess up simple things like "Game Mode" and "Smart Fan Control." Often times, when you enable game mode, it will actually go into quite mode and slow down to 1.5Ghz or do nothing at all. Sometimes setting made from the apps do not take effect in the BIOS and changing things in the BIOS will sometimes revert itself upon your next reboot. It does have all of the options for manually setting overclocking. Another annoying thing is that the CPU temp will occasionally drop to 0 and will only come back after a reset. This often happens if you try to use the Extended LED settings on CPU temp . They motherboard product page advertises Mystic Light for LED control, but apparently it doesn't work with this board. You are only able to pick one of 7 colors. I, like many others, are unable to get the Memory speed up past 2933. At first I had purchased some Ripjaws V memory, but returned it after one stick tested faulty. Never could get the other stick to overclock either. So I checked the Memory compatibility list on MSI's website and got some GEiL Forza 3200 and still won't go over 2933.
Excellent board for the price. It's not perfect and there are a few things I would change, but all in all it's a really well built board. This is the first computer I have built for myself LONG time (about 18 years) as I have needed laptops for work and have just had to get laptops that could pull double duty. I started doing some motovlogging about a year ago so I wanted something that could help out with editing video as well as playing a few games.

Pros: Reinforced PCIe 3.0 slots
Supports SLI and Crossfire (comes with SLI bridge)
RGB header for if/when i decide to add additional lighting
Plenty of onboard fan controllers
POST LED's did help with faulty RAM diagnosis

Cons: LED lighting on the board is barely visible, especially the small strip that separates the audio section of the board. I understand it is most likely this way to reduce power consumption, but my case fan LED's just wash it out.
UEFI/BIOS will not show M.2 hard drives. Please add this into the manual at the very least. I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out why it wasn't showing until I found a post on Reddit.
M.2 slot puts SSD under the video card. We'll have to see if maybe the video card fan helps to cool it, but it does make it slightly more annoying to change if something goes wrong with any M.2 device. Would like to have seen a second M.2 like on the Tomahawk.

Other: Why the CPU hold down brackets?? The Wraith coolers from AMD are all screw down as are all aftermarket coolers of which I am aware. The backplate is all that was required.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite ready for prime time....

I wanted to do a new Ryzen 7 build and had originally pre-ordered the Asus Crosshair VI motherboard from Amazon. After several weeks of having some rather expensive components gather dust, I decided to bite the bullet and order this MSI board instead. Before I continue, let me say I have been building computer systems for over twenty years and this was one of the more problematic builds I have done. This motherboard is *NOT* for beginners (at least not yet). Here are my observations:

- BIOS appears pretty broken
- Memory Compatibility is very poor. Don't even try to just pop something in...it probably won't work and may damage the CPU if it is above 1.35v. Pick the memory you want from the MSI Hardware Compatibility page.
- Documentation is terrible (the manual you can download from the MSI website is significantly better than that included with the product).
- The manual indirectly mentions configuring M.2_1 and M.2_2 as hardware RAID 0, but I have yet to figure out how to do that. The BIOS (see broken above) does not seem to recognize either of my installed Samsung 960's but Windows sees them and will install and boot from them. The BIOS does see traditional 2.5" SSD drives and will allow them to be configured in a RAID array.
- A "heat shield" comes to protect the NVMe that sits underneath the video card. It seemed like an odd idea to me (to reduce airflow around the chips to solve a heat problem) and there is chatter in other posts about it actually aggravating the heat problem. I took it off.
- This board is very expensive for the features it offers, which occasionally can get a bit gimmicky.

The above being said, the reason I am given this three stars is the board seems to perform well and MSI appears to have given some serious thought to its design. The board itself is made of high quality components. I also hate to blast MSI when AMD may be at least partially to blame by not providing full / correct specs to the motherboard manufacturers prior to release. One of the major difficulties I ran into aside from just getting an AM4 motherboard was finding a liquid CPU cooler that would support the new socket; this is something I think AMD should have addressed ahead of time.

In conclusion, after the BIOS has been fixed and some other integration issues are addressed this may be a board worth looking at. For now, it isn't ready for prime time.
