5.0 out of 5 starsFinally, I can ditch the TN panels for competitive gaming! Sony GDM FW-900 CRT in LCD form factor?
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2019
Many years ago I owned a Dell Ultrasharp 23" 60hz panel. It had beautiful, vibrant colors thanks to the IPS panel. I was able to play competitive Counter-Strike on it (reported an input lag of 0.6ms! 0.6!!) while also doing graphic design work due to the terrific color accuracy.

But monitor technology was changing and soon enough 120hz and 144hz panels came out. I still wanted to play at a high competitive level in Counter-Strike:Global Offensive, but unfortunately at the time the lowest input lag 144hz monitors were all TN panels. So I had to give up any hobbyist graphic design work. But the BenQ monitors I owned were excellent for CS:GO and using Blur Busters' BENQ Utility tool, you could control how much strobing and crosstalk was displayed on your monitor. The only trade-off is the more strobing at a higher refresh rate, the less luminance the panel emits.

Earlier this year I purchased an LG 27GK750F-B 27" 240hz panel. While this wasn't a huge leap from 60hz to 144hz, it was still enough to be noticeable. While the panel itself had decent color reproduction and no dead pixels, the firmware was broken. You had to download a Custom Resolution Utility application in order to "overclock" the monitor to force it into the correct refresh rate. While this monitor for the most part ran well at 240hz with Motion Blur Reduction turned on, there would be black artifacts from the monitor that would come up from time to time, or microstuttering, and so forth. It seemed that the frametimes could not match up with the display output which would cause the stuttering to occur sporadically. Needlessly to say it was an extremely frustrating experience. There were some "workarounds" to try to keep it stable for awhile before it would act up again. LG never bothered to issue a firmware update after repeated requests on their company's message board.

So I decided to never purchase an LG brand monitor again after the lack of firmware support and pretty much delivering a monitor that didn't function as advertised.

But then I heard about these 240hz IPS monitors on the horizon. I usually frequent the Blur Busters website for the best gaming monitor recommendations. And the owner of the site posted he had calibrated the motion blur reduction of this new ViewSonic panel, and that the strobing at 120hz reminded him of the motion clarity and color of the holy grail of CRT monitors: the Sony GDM FW900.

I owned the Sony GDM FW900 about 5 years ago and it truly deserved the reputation as being the best CRT monitor ever made. (Only the Artisan eclipses it by a hair with photography use). So to hear about an IPS panel that can look as good with the motion clarity of the FW900 had me very excited.

And yep I can say, while not exactly as bright as the FW900 in blur reduction mode (there will be more brightness in the next firmware version I am told), nor having those inky blacks (there is that IPS glow) it is the closest thing I'll get to that CRT in an LCD. Just superb. I no longer miss having the FW900 which is an incredible achievement. For purists, yes this is still an LCD panel and there is just something about the way CRTs present an image that even the highest end LCDs can't match. It is a total shame CRTs were killed off. However I think with the XG270, with the blur reduction enabled, and 99% sRGB/IPS colors, it considerably closes the gap. The FW900 is dead, long live the FW900!

The motion blur reduction in 240hz (it's 241hz in Windows), while there is crosstalk at the bottom, manages to run without a hiccup playing CS:GO, Rocket League, Overwatch, etc. (all games can be set at 240FPS or higher). I am not detecting any input lag when I'm playing CS:GO, in fact it might even be faster than the LG panel I bought earlier. There's no microstuttering or tearing to be had. (I have a RTX2080Ti card and my CPU is i9-9900k.)

The G-Sync option is amazing and here you obviously get much more brightness than you do the motion blur reduction. I actually find G-Sync with Ultra low latency and VSYNC enabled to be pretty good with CS:GO. If you really want to shave off those miliseconds, obviously keep the G-Sync off but I might actually stick with it. For other games that aren't CS:GO, I will probably use G-SYNC and maybe dial down the refresh rate to 120hz since it's difficult for most modern games to hit 240FPS consistently.

The sRGB color temperature setting in the OSD provides the best preset colors IMO. Of course you can adjust it as you wish.

Also the monitor and stand feel very well built, doesn't seem cheap.

TL;DR - Time to throw away your TN panels and upgrade to an IPS panel if you want both motion clarity and color accuracy. I could not be happier. This appeals to me as a serious competitive CS:GO player who occasionally does ESEA to regular casual games. I love having the flexibility of having settings for competitive use and for eyecandy, where I couldn't get that with my BenQ panels.

Highly recommended!

Great job ViewSonic!

3.0 out of 5 starsCan be good, doesn't mean shipped as good
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020
The short. (Also update as of 14 Jan 2021 at bottom)
Paying over 500 for a monitor that is this badly calibrated out of the box is bad when ACER and BenQ does a better job with pre calibration.

The long
I wanted to love this monitor and it can be good. For a over 500 dollar monitor you would expect not to fiddle around with calibrations to correct white balance. There are entire forms for this issue and almost every major reviewer has commented on it. I would buy again because this is not acceptable to be this bad out of the box at this price point.

Pros.
Some rbg control on monitor itself saving yourself from downloading another tool if it has the preset you want.
Colors look good after a lot of visits to forms, calibration sites, and comparing to color checks. I game mainly but paid the money for the capability to look good so it better work as intended.
The included USB hub and headphone holder worker as intended, even while attached to a twin arm Vesa mount.
Rubber cable clips for mouse work great
Power indicator control, optional to turn off.

Cons
Cable from power brick can easily lose connection if cable managed even slightly in a way it doesn't like. (Thought unit was DOA)
Pre calibration makes 90 dollar monitors look great. Seriously, it is that bad.
Has a power brick with short DC cable end. I would of liked 4 feet.

After thoughts
If you don't mind spending a lot of time on a slightly feature rich monitor, go for it.
If you just want to game or watch movies out of the box, RUN. Anything else would be better.

Main computer component driving this while dealing the issue is a 3090 FE in case that helps some how.

UPDATE: 14 Jan 2021 -
The monitor was unresponsive after coming up after a power outage in the area. The panel wouldn't work or provide any input from the controls on the monitor. power cycling did nothing even when disconnecting the power and reconnecting. The fix was to remove the Display Port cable, then power cycle. My disport cables are premium and plugged into a 3090 FE. My other monitors attached do not have this issue, even when changing which display port they are plugged into on the 3090 FE and swapped cables to at one point to double check.

I had this issue before when the unit was brand new and was about to send it back but found out the monitor would display its menu when just plugged in by itself. So this has been an issue since day one of owning it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 240hz, 1ms GTG, G-Sync with incredible viewing angle, and HDR10 (with caveat)!

You have to know what you're getting for your $: it's a 1080p monitor. If you want 4K or 1440, then that's your deciding factor and you already know that you want that increased resolution, and you'll look elsewhere. If you're looking for 1080p with bells and whistles, this is THE ONE.

I have a upper mid-range (or lower high-end, if you prefer) self built gaming rig, and the last thing I ended up buying for it was this monitor. I spent a looooot of time working through articles and reviews, bleeding edge discussions, and wikipedia and google searches trying to whittle down my preferred monitor, and only saw this monitor in passing . . . EXCEPT . . . I went to "Blur-Busters" with my current monitor because I wanted to get a feel for what I wanted when I saw the new "Blur-Busters Approved" blurb. I went to the list to see what was there because this is a new thing they're trying to get in the industry, and this was the only monitor on the list (so far). So I looked a little harder at it, and I got excited, a little more research, and I made the plunge. I was skeptical about having only DP1.2 considering it's cranking out a 240Hz refresh with less than 1ms GTG, but reviews were great (except people were talking about about no HDR -- more on that later).

Worth every penny!
1) The screen is amazingly fresh and stable
2) G-Sync compatibility works automatically with current drivers (don't forget to change your resolution to PC - 1080p - 240Hz . . . Win10 defaults to HD - 1080p - 60Hz -- UNLESS you want HDR, read on)
3) Color and brightness are very well matched at default calibration without any fiddling with the OSD
4) With the tuning the "Blur-Buster" guys did with Viewsonic on the refresh strobing, it's liquid smooth when the 2080 is pumping out serious frames at any refresh.

Now, I wanted it all, and posted pics as proof: HDR10 with G-Sync at a 120Hz refresh. DP1.2 CAN run HDR10, even though compliance came out in DP1.4. Stated by VESA guidelines, it's basically all about bandwidth. DP1.2 will run HDR10 if . . . AND ONLY IF . . . you allow enough room on the signal for the 25% extra data that 10bpp has over 8bpp. There are two ways to do this (easily): reduce resolution, or reduce refresh rate. HDR10 will run with a DP1.2 or higher rated cable, if you lower your refresh to 120Hz to allow it room on the bus, because let's face it . . . we're not going to lower our resolution, right?!

Tested on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, G-Sync at 120Hz with HDR10 is buttery smooth and amazing! Everything I've tested has worked, and been stutter, tear, and blur free, with amazing color and light and dark contrast.

Get this monitor, it's a beast!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the price there is nothing like it!
Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2019
Style: 24-Inch 144Hz FHDPattern: MonitorVerified Purchase
I was looking for a good monitor that could run with both my desktop PC and my Macbook pro if I needed the extra screen space. After much research I stumbled upon this monitor. First let me just say that if you intend to game, 144hz is something you won't realize you needed until you have it. With that alone I would recommend this monitor for the price. Below I am going to list some pros and cons of the monitor and try to answer some of the questions that I had when purchasing.

Pros:
- The overall picture quality for a monitor in this price range is great for all forms of use (Gaming, work, browsing and shows) One recommendation I would have would be to adjust the picture settings to your liking upon receiving it.
- The Stand. I really didn't think this is something I would care about, I mean after all it's just a stand. The one included with this monitor is so much better than those just offering a slight tilt or height adjustment. Especially if you are working with minimal space I have been able to make it work for my liking.
- The speakers. All in all monitor and tv speakers are not great and I would always recommend picking up a pair of external ones for a good setup. The ones included in the monitor are above average and will work for whatever you may need. They won't blow you away with their quality, but upon purchasing they also wont make you constantly be thinking you need external speakers.
- All of the built in technology (FreeSync, 1ms response time, etc.) The tiny features that ViewSync has been able to put into this monitor is great! I have been blown away with just what I have been able to do with some customization in the settings.

Cons:
- As any TN panel would be it is not great with color accuracy in all conditions. So just be aware if you are by a window or a brighter light, that your settings may need to be tweaked slightly more than some of the top rated custom settings for this device.

Notes:
- RGB. To be entirely honest I was not the biggest fan of the RGB when I received the device. Even as someone who has their PC and all peripherals with RGB. The monitor has back facing lights that are not very bright nor extremely customizable. I would highly recommend getting the non RGB if you do not need it and saving a little money. Besides those back lights I have not found any more "elite" features that you get with this.
- If you can, buy two. This is not a necessity, but more something I would recommend for anyone. Two monitors is one of those things you don't realize was so useful until you have it. Especially if you are not into gaming it is great for productivity, I am a college student and have loved being able to have a word document on one side with my research on the other monitor.
- Lastly, does the screen size really matter? One of the main questions I had when getting this was whether or not I would like the extra real estate. After going with the 24" monitor I can say this is the perfect screen size for a 1080p panel. Everything is crisp and accurate but trying to stretch that same pixel density over a larger panel would be and is noticeable. Plus, at the average desk setup, where one is sitting approx. 2-3 feet away, it would just be too large of a display. My recommendation is the 24"

5.0 out of 5 stars (Almost) everything I could want

High refresh rate, QHD Resolution, suuuuper bright, and deep blacks. I honestly don't know why more manufactures don't make high-refresh high-resolution VA monitors. The reduced viewing angles and slightly worse color accuracy compared to IPS are a fine tradeoff to me in exchange for those beautiful deep blacks and bright contrast. If that's what you want, this is a great monitor! don't plan on doing any color grading work on it though.

What are my complaints? Well, unfortunately, (at the time of writing this) this monitor isn't certified G-sync compatible, even though it does have freesync premium pro. That's a bit of a downer if you intend to game on this with an Nvidia GPU.

Another issue is honestly the monitor stand. Don't get me wrong, It has great build quality; It's almost entirely metal, very heavy, and very stable. BUT, it is kinda excessively large and awkward. From the frontside of the center of the screen to the back of the base is roughly 11.5 inches. for the edges, it's about 13.5 inches. This means that if you are using the included stand, it is going to stick out over a foot from whatever wall or desk edge that you want to put it up against, making it take up a huge amount of real estate. The feet of the base stick out even further than this, easily 15 inches from the back end.

Sooo, just slap a VESA display mounting bracket on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor - but would not recommend the software (ELITE display controller)
Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2020
Style: 27-Inch Curved 165Hz 2KPattern: MonitorVerified Purchase
I've had this product for about one month. I bought two of them and both arrived without any dead pixels. However, one of the monitors was defective for reasons that the customer support team could not troubleshoot. The issue was the monitor was unable to change any of the display settings (view modes). The customer support team even had me try out their ELITE display controller software to attempt to change the display settings.

The ELITE display controller download for the software isn't recognized by Windows 10 as a trusted source - so you have to really force Windows to install the program. Once installed - you can only control one monitor at a time - so you have to:

Step1) Unplug the second monitor from GPU, then change the settings of the one still plugged in.
Step 2) Unplug the first monitor and then plug in the second and then change its settings...
Step 3) Plug in the first monitor and hope the settings stayed the same.

It's really a terrible piece of software... how do you not account for people with 2 monitors? That's a super common use-case @ViewSonic software engineering team.

Not to mention the ELITE display controller application really does stuff that you can already do on the OSD options, it just makes it go faster than having to use the monitor toggle button. So not very impressed by their software. At best, it makes controlling the RGB settings a lot easier and faster and is probably required to do anything fancy with the RGB settings.

After about 2 weeks of troubleshooting from the customer support team and no solution to my problem, they are now sending me a new monitor. I had to do a $370.00 credit card authorization for ViewSonic to send me the monitor in "good faith" that I return the defective one I have; once they have received the defective monitor they will release the $370.00 authorization. The initial link they sent me to do the credit card authorization didn't work, and I again had to contact them to get it fixed. It's been a couple of days since I completed the credit card authorization and I'm still waiting on a tracking number to show that ViewSonic has sent me the new monitor...

Altogether - the monitor (the one without issues) works great, looks great, and indeed delivers a 165Hz bright, crisp display. I would rate this 5-stars if the second monitor didn't have issues, and their ELITE display controller software were not garbage (which you really need to control the RGB effects as controlling from the OSB would be very difficult for custom settings). I might also give this 5-stars if the customer service gave quicker replies/service.

In my mind, they could definitely move a bit quicker on their customer service end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The XG240R was worth it! :D

Likes
--------
-very smooth gameplay due to the 144hz and freesync/g-sync compatibility.
-provides a lot of customization in the monitor setting. The pre-made settings profiles were helpful and well calibrated
-the monitor positioning is very flexible since the monitor stand offers rotation side to side, tilt, and height adjustment.
-vibrant colors after using a pre-made profile and made multiple tweaks in the setting. (not bad for a TN!)
-no ghosting and very responsive.
-clear picture! not blurry
-lastly has RGB!!!!! If RGB isn't needed, I would recommend going with the XG2402 as it pretty much the same monitor but has a red strip instead. The RGB tho does make the monitor look more aesthetically pleasing to me tho.

Dislikes
----------
-The monitor stand is a bit bigger than what I expected. It may just be me since I'm using a small table and used a 21" monitor in the past. The dimensions for the stand is approximately 12" x 6.5" x 17" (length x width x height).
-The color accuracy compared to ips panel. Although I put "vibrant colors" in my likes, I feel that this monitor still doesn't look as color accurate compared to an ips panel, as I owned and used an ips 60 hz monitor for many years. BUT the color accuracy on this monitor isn't terrible and is very much a good tn panel imo!

Overall Review
------------------
The XG240R offers everything a gaming monitor needs: 144 hz, g-sync/freesync compatibiliy, flexible monitor adjustment both the monitor settings and the positioning and the color is great for a TN.
I was a bit hesitant when buying this monitor initially as this monitor released not so long ago and doesn't have much reviews, but after using the monitor for about a week, I like it a lot and would recommended this monitor for any gamers or anyone whose looking to game on it! Fortunately enough my monitor didn't come with any dead pixels and none appeared after a week. Although I had a ips 60hz monitor back then, I think the colors are still great on this monitor. The IPS panel is still more color accurate but this TN panel is still very good! Overall I really like this monitor and would highly recommend people to check this monitor out.

If there are issues that arises later on, I will keep this review updated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, high quality gaming monitor - exceptional blur control - closest to CRT I've ever seen

I replaced an older 1440p 27" 60hz with the XG270, and I'm extremely impressed and pleased with my purchase. My first flat panel years (and years) ago was a ViewSonic and it replaced a ViewSonic P227 21" CRT monitor I had for years prior to that - my history with ViewSonic goes back a long way, and opening the box brought back a lot of great memories.

The build quality is excellent, fit and finish is solid throughout, and design and ergonomics (location of buttons / cables / etc.) are well engineered. It looks fantastic on my desk and I grin every time I see it.

Performance wise, it is astonishing. I followed the Blur Buster recommendations (which makes sense, since they worked with ViewSonic to tune and certify this as the first and currently only "Blur Buster Certified" gaming monitor) and dialed in, the motion control is CRT-like (and other reviews echo this observation).

It was very well calibrated for color out of the box, and looks fantastic in all the games I play - crisp image quality, fantastic motion blur control, nice and bright with solid contrast - what's not to love?

Without reservation, I highly, highly recommend this monitor! WELL DONE, VIEWSONIC!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly sharp, brilliant colors, and a very high quality design.

To compliment my new mid/high end PC build, I chose this new offering from ViewSonic purely from the posted specifications and their reputation from 15 years ago for building long lasting good quality monitors. The PC sees general home internet use, with gaming and some light photo/video editing (I'm a novice).
I'm very happy. Now, I'm coming from a very low end 1080P acer 12 year old monitor so this ViewSonic is obviously heaps improved. There are no dead pixels, the glare shields and cable management work as designed, height adjustment is ridiculously easy, and the picture blows me away. Youtube videos in 1440P are a completely difference experience now. Games play great though I'm not a serious gamer so can't give an experts opinion. Backlight bleed isn't an issue for me. It's there I guess but I'm not looking at a black screen long enough for it to be an problem. The RGB lighting was turned off in the beginning and has never been missed. It didn't bother me when it was turned on though. It's more background ambient light. I use powered speakers so the speakers included are turned off however they were adequate when initially powered up. For my needs, this monitor is exactly what I wanted and I'm perfectly satisfied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the monitor, hate the stand

The monitor itself is awesome, great framerate and picture quality, minus a little streaking when pixels transition dark to light. The only major complaint I have is how obnoxious the included monitor stand is. It's a sort of tripod shape that keeps you from pushing the monitor stand further back than you should be able to, and the front forks overreach into your keyboard and mouse space. I 100% recommend using a third party monitor mount with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO FAST, SO CLEAN, FPS MUST HAVE

I am a very serious FPS gamer and a bit of a PC fanatic. I have always been a big Samsung panel guy and have never been pulled away from their monitors or TV's since they got into the game, until now. I was all set to buy a G7 Odyssey until I saw on blur busters that the viewsonic Elite XG270 was the first monitor to have it's PureXp blur reduction certified by them. I also saw that it was a sub 1ms GTG IPS panel. I have always loved IPS vs. TN for it's color accuracy and deep blacks but I wanted nothing less than 240hz refresh and that was not an option I had found from a brand I trusted. I must say ViewSonic does not disappoint. This thing is AMAZING. It is so fast, so clean and in FPS games with my 2080ti pumping out 300 frames it is smooth as butter. G-Sync is a must and when I lock it in at 240hz it is literally perfection. No artifacts, no ghost from OD, just clean and clear speed. Not to mention is was less expensive. I personally like 1920x1080 for FPS gaming because it is easier for your card to drive at high frame rates over the 2k or 4k monitors. If you want more screen real estate then go for their 1440p version for a few hundred bucks more. 165hz is nothing to be ashamed of BUT if you want the absolute butter of 240hz in game this is the way to go. A couple of things to note that I figured out. 1. If you want to use purexp then you cannot turn on G-sync. I personally cannot tell between the two and I have obsessed over it so I keep G-sync on. 2. you can over clock this to 241 hz at 8-bit color but I cannot tell so I leave it at 240 10-bit. 3. You can use your graphics card to over drive this to 2560x1440 @ 165hz and it works just fine, but the text is a little blurry so you have to adjust your clear type settings and even then it is not as good as native 1440p. All in all I am REALLY happy with this monitor and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone in the market for a gaming monitor.
