I have no complaints about this antenna. However, the "no pointing necessary" in the description could be misleading to some people. I am a ham radio guy and understand antennas, so I was expecting the antenna would need to be aimed.
I live in south eastern Wisconsin between Milwaukee and Chicago. Depending on the aiming of the antenna, I'd get Milwaukee stations or some Milwaukee and some Chicago. Even Grand Rapids Michigan or South Bend Indiana which are like 50 miles away, but over the lake. However, a few Milwaukee stations I could never get a viewable quality. These are on a different antenna tower and probably a lower height.
I live in an apartment where I have to aim antenna through the length of the building with several other buildings between me and the station antenna tower. Plus I am on the first floor. So I was not expecting miracles right from the start. But I was amazed at what I was able to get in clear with careful aiming. I forgot I had a metal file cabinet on the other side of the wall. Raising the antenna above that greatly improved the signal quality. Turning the antenna sideways (cable coming out the side, not bottom) also helped for some stations.
A note to others, be aware that even a slight change in position, height, angle, vertical tilt and cable position may make the difference between no signal and a clear signal from 50 miles away.
My main issue is that I have to aim the antenna differently for different stations. It's not a flaw in this exact model, but the way all antennas of the "flat panel" design will perform in my particular setting. I plan to experiment with another antenna design. Overall though, I am not unhappy with this antenna. I think it does an amazing job.
"Mounted it behind the TV - got ONE station. I looked up the location of the broadcasting towers and found that they were all on the other side of my residence to the EAST. I ran a 50 ft coaxial cord (RG6 – not the one that came with the antenna) all the way down the hallway through the master bedroom and all the way through to my patio windows. Got about 50 stations but only two of the 4 major networks (CBS, ABC). Tried mounting it above the window just to see if it needed to be "in" the window, got about 5 stations. So, it was pretty clear for me it needed to be mounted IN the window.
Started by mounting it at the top of the window (masking tape works fine) where it looked like there were the fewest obstructions in the pathway outside. My window is about 5.5 ft high. Got about 50 stations but still only CBS and ABC. Moved it down to the second pane ...about 50 stations and now FOX and ABC, but no CBS. Moved it to the "least intuitive place" at the bottom of the window - looked to have the most obstructions relative to buildings. Got CBS, ABC and FOX and a total of around 50 stations. So you do need to experiment AND highest and most intuitive may not be the “best” place. The towers are about 27 miles from my residence. The NBC tower is suppose to be located in the exact area as the other networks, but for an unknown reason I get absolutely nothing for NBC.
Tried it with and without the amplifier – didn’t notice a difference so I’m currently operating it without the amplifier (one less thing plugged in, one less thing to worry about). Also tried it with the tuner in the TV and the tuner in my DVR and not much difference. So for me – it has to be in the window, and it has to be facing the towers EAST. Anywhere in my living room (including the living room windows which face WEST) and it would be worthless. The reception of most all the channels it receives are crystal clear – minor pixilation during violent thunderstorms. Happy that my equipment which was made obsolete by Spectrum’s transition to All Digital in my area is once again functional and working like a charm. Just wish I could get NBC. Will be trying a few other things to see if I can receive it, but for now, not pushing my luck."
"Giving it a 4 star rating because the cords that come with the unit are a bit on the “cheap” side."
