First, I have a Note 5. Some people have overheating issues with the S6. As I am someone who reads forums, nobody is having this issue with the Note 5. I have used the device for up to 4 hours and not one issue of overheating.
VR does drain the phone battery quite a bit so its a good idea to fully charge your phone before using this if you are going to be using it for a few hours. It does have a MicroUSB cord to connect to on the device itself, but that can limit your turning of your head...so for Netflix or more stationary type views that's fine.
There are a large number of apps available in the Oculus Store showing off gaming, 360 videos, 3D in 360, music, educational, science, social, etc. Most applications are either free and all the way up to about $20. Most are less than $10 or free. The one negative is that the Oculus Store is currently an app on your phone or via watching on the Gear VR and the ratings don't allow for any commentary. Also, the store is sort of chaotically organized, so hopefully they will improve that over time. You are also unable to view the store on a PC (yet). I highly recommend viewing the store via the app and not using the Gear VR as there are many apps in the app that you won't see via the GearVR view. It's also organized a slightly better. Also, be aware that you don't get notified of updates that you need. You'll only see them if you occasionally browse you library within the store app. I recommend you download updates when you are NOT using your GearVR.
Keep in mind that this is the first of a new technology. Resolution is low. Its kind of like looking through a screen door. HOWEVER, I will say that you quickly forget about that as you are so immersed in what you are viewing. Some of the apps and videos are fantastic immersive experiences. Some that come to mind and I highly recommend are Ocean Rift, MilkVR (has several fantastic videos), Marvel Avengers, Titans of Space, Dreadhalls, Gunjack, Esper 2, Herobound Spirit Champion, Anshar Wars 2, Lands End, Jurassic World, Cirque Du Soleil Kurios, Netflix, VRSE, Flickr VR.
Set up was easy. I don't find the headset particularly as comfortable as others say, but it's not very uncomfortable. I put most of the weight on the top strap and that helps a lot. The phone makes it heavier. I suspect that upcoming devices that don't leverage a phone, but rather a PC or PS4 will be more comfortable (e.g. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlaystationVR). Regardless, this is the first true consumer mobile experience without be tethered to something...other than the Google Cardboard and those equivalents and this is 10X better than that.
I got the Moga Power Pro controller to play with certain games that require a controller. It works quite well via Bluetooth. Keep in mind that this controller has two connection options, an A and B. Make sure you use option B. It will disconnect if you put the controller aside for a bit and aren't using it. If that happens, just turn the controller off, and then back to B and it should connect fine. Always does for me.
Everyone, except for my brother who refused to try it, has LOVED what they experienced. Everyone has commented on the potential. Just keep in mind when setting your expectations that this is similar to when cell phones first came out. Its a new technology. It will only get better with subsequent iterations. It will only get lighter. It will only get better resolution as prices for technology come down and newer technology comes out. However, you can't go wrong if you have one of the 4 phones that support this. Again, I recommend a Note 5 since it has a slightly better field of view than the S6 (at the expense of a negligible lower resolution (PPI)...though to me the FOV is more important for immersion), the Note 5 doesn't overhead, has more memory, and a larger battery
Honestly, I did not expect this to work as well as it does. If you've been thinking about trying VR and don't want to lay down tons of money on the high end sets, this is a perfectly capable and engrossing experience. Get a good swivel chair to play this on, especially with games like Lands End and Dark Days where 360 degree movement is necessary, and I'd also recommend getting a good Bluetooth controller. I use the MOGA Pro and it works flawlessly.
If I had one gripe it's that it's a total battery hog and will likely make your phone overheat after extended use. As far as I know, you can't charge it or plug it in while in use (which probably wouldn't work anyways with games requiring 360 movement anyways). Despite that, the thing is a blast to play and is really fun to let people try and laugh when they freak out nearly fall over from playing a horror game ("Play With Me" is free and probably the best way to scare the poo out of someone using it the first time) or letting them play a semi-casual shooter game like Smash Hit or Archer E Bowman. This thing has already paid for itself in the number of people i've amazed with it, thus far.
Superb sensing of head motion
Immersive content
Well thought out - it just works
Comfortable
Cons:
Lack of content
Field of view is narrow and not natural, feels like goggles
Resolution is distractingly low
In some cases have to remove phone and put it back in too frequently
Isolation (don't use with other people in the room or they will think you're nuts)
Needs hand-held controls.
Bottom Line:
Insanely cool, I never would have thought this would be possible 20 years ago. Still, needs improvements in resolution (very bandwidth hogging with 360 video, needs smarter compression, faster graphics processing, etc) and lacks in sense of smell and touch (needed for complete VR experience).
Review:
This is my first VR headset, I did try the earlier version of this, but not long enough to form much of an opinion. The value is good, it is a couple lenses, some sensors, and some controls. It is well build, and includes a micro USB or USB C phone connection so it will work with the S6 series/Note 5 phones as well as new Note 7 and a USB C charging port (also includes adapter to use micro USB for charging). Evidently, Samsung might not be including all adapters in all units. There should be 1 dark blue locking Micro USB, 1 dark blue locking USB-C, and 1 white Micro USB to USB-C (for power) in the box. Mine had everything included.
It easy enough to install your phone, but make sure to lock down the selected adapter (USB C or micro USB) so it doesn't fall out, and for my S6 Edge+ I don't use the back plate at all, so you see the phone looking at the headset. The headset fits well over eye glasses and has an adjustable diopter (focus adjustment) with a suitable range for most.
Looking through the lenses they are sharpest in the center, and get softer towards the edges with some color aberrations (my hobby is camera optics), so you will see some color fringing around white text near the edges more so than the center. Combined with the relatively low resolution of the VR content, the overall image sharpness is not great, but definitely "acceptable". Streaming content aggravates this as it is very high bandwidth, so you will often see compression issues.
The headset is very comfortable, fine for 1 or 2 hours of use. I haven't had my phone overheat yet, but it does get very hot. I also haven't worn it for more than 1 hour yet. The controls are good, but sometimes hard to find without bumping touch pad. So it is easy to accidentally activate something you didn't mean to. A hand-held touch pad would be great.
First thing I did was go download Minecraft VR. Make sure you have a supported Bluetooth game-pad, I re-purposed as spare Fire TV game pad, hold home for 5 seconds to pair it, although you will have to re-pair it with Fire TV if you want to use it with it. Then make sure you enable Bluetooth through the Oculus App using the headset (for some reason it turned Bluetooth off automatically so I couldn't see the controller from Minecraft VR. With the immersive mode enabled in Minecraft, it can be a little nauseating. I don't think I could play long enough to cause overheating my phone to be an issue. It is really fun in this mode, and a bit scary. Falling off a cliff or seeing the zombies as tall as you definitely adds a sense of realism.
Full 360 content is a bit annoying as it is hard to look behind you, and uncomfortable turning around while not being able to see the real world. A spinning chair is not a bad idea. With a game like Minecraft the controller can be used to change view, which means you don't have to get up, but you do have to look at block you want to break, so that means looking up/down. There might be a setting to change this to control stick, but haven't looked yet.
This can pair with a 360 camera, like the Gear 360, so that you can easily create content viewable on the Gear VR, which is great. Some existing content requires using Samsung VR App (installed through Oculus store), then you take your phone out of the Gear VR, use a web-browser to browse to the content, then click the Open in Samsung VR link, and then have to put the phone back in the Gear VR. Very cumbersome, but allows you to get to some content you might not be otherwise able to.
Overall, it is easily worth the asking price, but consider it for entertainment purposes, maybe to make your own content. I don't think I will end up using it all that long. It isolates me too much from the real world, but it is really cool. Would be great for meditative purposes, etc. Humans are highly visual, and this really immerses you in the video in a way that no flat screen TV can. Completely different level of entertainment.

Depending on what you're looking to do, this piece can be very impressive. Personally , I bought it with ''what the heck'' in mind, intending to see what it can do for the movie experience.
- The match of high resolution of the AMOLED screen and this gear is great. The focus gear on the top is also a very good tool to match your eyes strenght
- You can watch up to 4K youtube via the Samsung internet app (it uses mobile youtube). I like that you have 5 level of screen zoom in the app.
- You can watch your own videos (via micro sd card!). The Samsung Gallery player is a little blurry BUT the Oculus video is very sharp with great scenery such as ''man cave'' or real movie theater (2 zoom options, 5 scenery). The only thing I found unfortunate with the bigger screen (movie theater or void) is that you are sitting slightly too close to the screen so it's a little too big for the field of view. Don't worry though , there is a third app which is Moon VR player and this one is the perfect mix of the previous two; sharp screen and custom zoom on a black background
- If you're wondering what kind of screen size you can get out of movies , let say the smaller size would be a huge projector at home and the biggest would be the first row of Imax , except in this case your field of view is 101 degree instead of 180 , so.... too close on top of too close haha :)
- I can't speak for Netflix but note that their content display at 480p (standard definition) right now so buy with caution if you're a Netflix freak
Now you're probably wondering if there is anything negative I can say about this. Well, there is a well known on screen effect called the ''screen door'' AKA grid of very tiny black dots that is present while watching the screen. Personally though, I found that if you're watching let say 720\1080p content with the Oculus video or Moon app , your eyes adjust to it and you forget it quickly. Beside this, your phone battery will drain very quickly but you can use the Gear VR wired , so no worries there.
Overall I'm very surprised that I can get this kind of quality experience at this price. Honestly, I wasn't expecting this. If you already have a Galaxy phone , the price on this is a steal right now as the newest expensive model don't improve the movie experience at all. Only buy the new one if you have an S8
