Elegant soundbar that just works, with a few minor quirks

Elegant soundbar that just works, with a few minor quirks
I've gone through a lot of soundbars. Most recently I tried two Sony soundbars and ended up returning them. The main thing I dislike about a lot of other soundbar setups is that they come with a separate subwoofer to put on the floor. With those setups the soundbar itself doesn't product much, if any, bass and relies on the subwoofer. Personally I don't like using up the floor space for the subwoofer because I really don't like tons of bass (I don't need to shake the whole room), and I live in an apartment so I don't want a speaker sitting directly on the floor firing down into my neighbor's apartment below. The new Sonos Beam soundbar is great because it has full range sound from the single piece of equipment. A subwoofer isn't needed. Of course you can always add the wireless Sonos subwoofer if you really crave that earth-shaking bass, but I think for most people the bar alone produces enough bass for music and movies. The soundbar is super easy to connect if your TV has an HDMI ARC port (most TVs from the last several years do). You plug in the power cable and then plug in one HDMI cable from the bar to your TV and you're done. The bar receives all the sounds from your TV and any connected devices and plays them. HDMI CEC also allows the bar to automatically power on with the TV and your TV remote will control the volume of the bar. Even connected devices can pass the volume control signal through the TV and to the Sonos bar. For instance, I am using an Apple TV and the volume control on the Apple TV remote controls the Sonos Beam volume now.The bar works great for the TV sound but also is super easy to use for things like Spotify or internet radio. The Sonos app on your phone or tablet controls exactly what is playing out of the bar so you don't even need to have the TV turned on if you are using the soundbar for music. The Alexa integration is superb and when paired with a service like Spotify allows you to just request songs and have them start playing... such as "Alexa, play Where The Streets Have No Name by U2"... a second later your song is playing. If you don't want to use Alexa or want to only use it occasionally there is a microphone on/off touch control on the top of the bar. Sonos is quick to point out that the microphone LED is hardwired to the microphone (rather than being controlled by software) so if the LED is off you can be sure the microphone is actually off. The only potential negative with the Beam compared to other Alexa devices (such as the traditional Amazon Echo devices), is that, at least as of this review, there is not a way to change the default wake word. You are forced to use "Alexa" - which may be problematic if you have an actual human Alexa in your household. The bar itself looks elegant and blends in well with your entertainment setup. I opted for the white bar since my TV stand is white. The top panel has a very simple touch control setup with controls for volume up and down, play/pause, and microphone on/off. The back panel is extremely simple with just the power cable, a button for syncing, a wired network connection jack, and the HDMI port.Being a Sonos device you can easily integrate this with your existing Sonos system or add more speakers for other rooms later. You can also add a pair of Sonos One speakers to act as true rear surround sound speakers and add the aforementioned subwoofer for a true 5.1 setup (although if you are wanting the rear surrounds and subwoofer you might be better off buying a regular receiver/speaker setup as the Sonos setup for 5.1 will cost you around $1500 and will not be nearly as flexible or configurable as a traditional setup). Personally I only recommend getting the Sonos Beam if you are looking for a simple, one device solution. If you start adding speakers you go down a path where there are better solutions for less money. The overall sound quality is great although the stereo separation / sound field is not quite as wide as I was hoping. This may be because I don't have walls directly to the left and right of the speaker for the sound to reflect off of. The sound is not bad by any means, but I can definitely tell that the sound is coming from under the TV rather than from the sides like I'm used to with traditional speaker setups. In my picture the Sonos Beam is shown beneath a 55" Sony TV (XBR55X900F). I was hoping the bar would be able to slide completely under the TV so the front grille of the bar would be flush with the TV screen.. However, as you can see, it is just a hair too tall to be able to squeeze under the front edge of the TV. This isn't impacting the sound or anything but I was just hoping it would fit for a slightly cleaner look - although if it did then the top touch controls would have been inaccessible. The only real complaint I have about this bar is the fact that it consumes the HDMI ARC port on your TV. Sonos has provided a way to avoid using the HDMI ARC port by supplying a HDMI to Optical adapter in the box. This allows you to connect the optical audio output from your TV to the Beam instead of using the HDMI cable. This is a workable solution, however when you use the optical cable you lose out on the remote control and sync functionality so you would have to control the volume from the Sonos app on your phone rather than being able to use the TV volume controls. This HDMI ARC port issue may not bother you if you have a TV with multiple HDMI ports and they all support 4K and HDR, however on my Sony TV the only ports that support HDR are ports 2 and 3. Port 3 is the HDMI ARC port, so I essentially have to "waste" that port's HDR ability by connecting it to the Sonos just for audio. Once I do that all I'm left with is HDMI port 2 on the TV for HDR use. Right now I have my Apple TV connected to this port, but if I add another HDR device in the future (UHD Blu-Ray, Playstation, Xbox One, etc.) I won't have a free port on the TV to use with the new device and will have to get some kind of external HDMI switch. This is one area where a traditional home theater receiver is a better solution as you can connect multiple HDMI sources to the receiver and have it act like the switch. With the Sonos Beam you use up the HDMI ARC port on your TV but aren't using it for video, just the audio path from the TV to the Beam.Pros:- Great sound from a tiny soundbar- Black or white color options let you choose the one that blends in best to your environment- Simple single HDMI cable connection- CEC control allows the TV and connected devices to adjust the volume and turn the soundbar on and off- Sonos ecosystem for music and multi-room audio- Alexa integration so this can replace an existing Amazon Echo or similar deviceCons:- Sound field is not very wide if you don't have a small room with sidewalls to reflect the sound- HDMI ARC connection may consume a valuable HDMI port on your TV and limit the available ports you have for use with actual video devices, especially if you have multiple 4K/HDR capable devices- Alexa wake word cannot be changed from "Alexa"- Subwoofer is not included, so people who expect tons of bass may not be satisfied (I think the bass from the bar itself is more than enough)To summarize, this is the best soundbar I've tried so far. If you're looking for a simple solution to give your TV and music better sound, while at the same time looking nice in you room, then this is definitely the soundbar to get. Don't expect it to match the full sound you'd get from a traditional home theater setup but it more than makes up for that with it's simplicity. If you already use the Sonos system in your house or Alexa devices then those features are just icing on the cake with the Sonos Beam as it will integrate perfectly with both the Sonos and Alexa ecosystems.

A quick word of advice before unboxing the soundbar, download the Sonos App first. I downloaded it onto my iPad and the setup was quick and easy.

The quality of the sound from the Sonos is fantastic and greatly enhances the TV experience. I had a JBL unit previously and while solid, it simply wasn't as strong as the Sonos.

My only criticism is the Sonos app, which isn't very intuitive to use. And since there is no remote included with the soundbar the app is your only option.

I was looking for an audio setup that I can build over time and decided on the Sonos system. I needed something that sounds great, sleek, modern, and interoperability with multiple devices. The Sonos Beam checks all these boxes. This being my first Sonos product, I don't have any comparison.

I live in a 500 sq ft apartment and the sound it emits fills the entire place at 50%-60% volume. I wish I could blast this thing but considering the neighbors, I keep it at 25% and it still sounds great. Enabling night mode makes night time listening enjoyable and living in the city with a lot of ambient noise makes certain dialogue sound muddled; the speech enhancement mode makes a difference in speech clarity.

I don't have a TV, I mainly use this to output sound from my PC connected through the S/PDIF optical port. The accessories it came along with contains an HDMI and an HDMI-S/PDIF optical adapter. The length of both look like it's about 5ft/60 inches; if your Beam is placed farther than this, you may want to consider buying a longer HDMI.

TIP: Being a first time Sonos user, I didn't know how to change audio sources. I wanted to hear the sound from my computer and there was no sound coming out of it and I assumed it's automatic if there is audio coming in from S/PDIF. Searching google, I found out you have to do this manually by commanding, "Alexa, Switch to TV" or through the app under the "Browse" tab then pick the "TV" option.

Playing audio from my iMac, iPad, iPhone, and PC is flawless and I'm looking forward to expanding my setup in the future.

I have several Sonos speakers already (a couple Play:1's, a couple Ones, and a One SL) so when we decided to get a sound bar to go along with a new TV we were purchasing, I already knew that it would be a Sonos because we're so invested in that ecosystem. I checked out a Sonos display at a local store and compared the sound from the Beam and the Playbar...the Playbar definitely had stronger, richer sound. But for me, it wasn't a big enough difference to justify the large price jump. So I decided the Beam would be good enough for us (especially since we were upgrading from 10 year old TV speakers).

Getting it set up was as simple as could be...I plugged in the power, plugged it into ethernet, connected it to the TV via the HDMI-ARC port and then went through the Sonos setup in the iPhone app. I was done with the whole thing in just a couple minutes.

And WOW! Our family room isn't giant by any means, but it's not tiny either (it's also kind of an odd shape). The Beam absolutely fills the room with sound and I'm amazed that such a small device can produce sound that seems to come from all directions. I love that it's got a setting where it can be grouped with the other speakers and play music, but as soon as I start using the TV it automatically leaves that group and plays the sound from the TV instead (you can turn this off if this isn't the desired behavior). I wasn't interested in using it with any of the voice assistants, so I can't comment on that. And I don't know if it's the TV doing it or the Sonos, but it's pretty slick that I can adjust the volume from my phone, from the Apple TV remote or from the TV remote itself. Sonos has always felt like such a premium product and the Beam is no different.

    Totally happy with this thing!

I’ve purchased three Sonos products: a Play 1, Play 3, and now a Beam. I ended up replacing the Play 1 with a Play 3 because it didn’t sound good enough for the price I paid when I could get a Play 3 for $100 dollars more. I’ve been running the Play 3 paired to an Amazon Echo so I could voice control it. The Play 3 was awesome but lacked the ability to airplay with my iPhone, which isn’t critical but is really convenient. I needed a sound bar for my TV and didn’t want to pay $600 for the Playbar which seemed too expensive for the lack of features I wanted, so when I heard that Sonos was releasing a new sound bar with AirPlay and Alexa built in I was psyched. I finished setting up my new Beam about an hour ago and have tried it with movies, TV shows, PlayStation 4 games and of course music. I have to say that it sounds phenomenal! It has a bigger sound than my Play 3 but the fact that it plugs into my TV and has built in Alexa control means that it can replace multiple devices in my house. One great thing is that I no longer have to say “Alexa, do X on Sonos” but can just say “Alexa, do X”. It’s a small thing but one I appreciate.

If you get the beam, note that you need to pair your TV remote with the beam afterwards. Just go into the Sonos app settings, click the room you have the Beam in, and sync with the remote. It takes all of 10 seconds and couldn’t be easier but it took me a little while to figure out that I needed to do this in order to use my TV remote to control the TV volume like usual. Hopefully this will save you a little time as well!

Flawless sound, easy set up. A perfect choice for anyone looking to add richer sound to their Television. I paired mine with two Sonos Ones to create surround sound and it could not have been any easier or more convenient. They all connect via Bluetooth so there were no speaker wires to hide. The quality and complexity of the sound is startling at first. Dialogue, music and sound effects in movies and video games is richer, clearer and a joy to hear. The app allows quick and easy access to your music apps (I use Spotify) as well, so this product doubles as a fantastic stereo system. It even comes with a nighttime mode that raises lower sounds and softens louder noises so I can enjoy the full surround sound experience even after the kids have gone to bed. 10/10 could not recommend enough.

I purchased the Sonos beam as well as two Sonos ones for my living room. The sound easily fills my medium/large sized living room. I'm really pleased with the quality. We had guests over and I accidentally switched back to our tv speakers briefly before returning to the Sonos speakers and our guests commented on how substantially the new speakers improved the sound. I can easily cast my music directly to the speakers using Google Play music, or I can cast to my tv to play music through the speakers if I'm using a different music streaming app. I rarely stream music through the Sonos app because it's just kind of an unnecessary hassle. Im a big fan of Google, with a pixel and multiple Google homes in my house, but I have to say Alexa is just as good if not better than the Google assistant.
I wanted to purchase the sub as well but just couldn't justify doubling the expense just for the sub. Everyone who has listened to them has told me that I don't need the sub and I agree that music and movies still sound fantastic without it. All in all I'm very happy with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect into a Sonos ecosystem

I have Sonos speakers in most rooms at home. I had a separate sound bar with my TVs (living room and kitchen). The Beam seemed like a nice upgrade at a reasonable value to complete the Sonos set up at home. My living room is now on a Beam + 2x play 1 on surround set up and my kitchen on Beam + 1 play 3 synced. The upgrade is absolutely worth the money (great sound, easy to set up, modular, etc). When watching sports games, having the sound of TV in all rooms of the house is quiet an experience :D.
I would not be bullish recommending the Beam as a standalone purchase outside of a Sonos ecosystem. I think some alternative are worth considering in this case.

2.0 out of 5 stars No manual. Setup is a nightmare. Not good for seniors.
Reviewed in Canada on December 22, 2018
Are you interested in the special features of a SONOS product, like speech enhancement or volume control for night listening? Beware! This isn't going to be easy.

SONOS needs to warn prospective buyers of these facts:

There is no manual, nothing in the box but "Go get the SONOS App". Period.

There is no real manual on the SONOS site either. Their introductory video does not include how to operate basic features which they advertise (and maybe the reason you bought it). You will be dependent on help from other users, Google searches, unless you are a trained computer nerd, or under the age of 18. Not good for tech-fearing seniors!!)

If you do not have Apple products with up-do-date IOS (operating system) you will not get full functionality. (See below)

The App requires the latest operating system and cannot even install the product without that. It may take you an hour or more to update and survive the update.

If you are a senior with hearing problems, or anyone having trouble with TV or movie dialogue, you may be considering the Sonos Beam which promises to help increase voice audio and decrease sudden loud sounds. Get set for a struggle, because SONOS makes it really hard to find those features, and they won't tell you how to access them.

    THE UGLY DETAILS

First problem: the power cord does not connect well to the unit. The plug falls out easily if you move the Beam (which you will do to plug in your HDMI cable). Each time the plug falls out, it takes the unit up to 3 minutes to set itself up again. Other manufacturers KNOW how to make a power cord that stays plugged in. Dumb design.

Second problem: SONOS does not provide a manual with the unit, and there is no comprehensive manual online. Some features remain a mystery and take a Google search to find out what the heck is going on - from other users.

SONOS does provide a setup video online. That video ends without telling you how to choose the "Night setting" (volume balancing) or the speech enhancement feature (the reason I bought it). You are on your own there.

If you search their site, you will find reference to "Now Playing" on your Iphone, and a way to control those features there. Providing you have an Iphone, and the phone must have the latest operating system, there is no hint on where to find "Now Playing". By the way, if you choose the "Night Setting" on your Iphone, that also kills off any tone warning you have for new messages coming in on your Iphone or Ipad. So you have crippled your phone to set a TV soundbar. Plus, there is no return message, or light on the unit, to let you know of success, that the settings on the SONOS unit have been changed. Nothing indicates what state or mode the unit is in, or whether it keeps those settings next time you turn it on.

If you search the Customer questions database on the SONOS site, several times, you may finally find the mystery solved by a user (not the company): buried deep in the SONOS App, choose "Room", then your TV, and then you will see a "moon" symbol for night, and a box that turns out to be speech enhancement. Nowhere does Sonos tell me how to access the features I bought it for, and that they advertise successfully.

Third: installation nightmares. Because there is no manual, and there are no hardware switches for features, you are entirely dependent on downloading the Sonos App. If you do not have an Iphone or IPAD, certain features will be crippled. For example, Iphone users can do a scan of the room ("Truetone") to set the features for that room. Android, PC, forget it. You don't get that.

The Sonos App ONLY works if you have the latest operating system (at least on Mac products). We wanted to use an IPAD for the controller. But to do that we had to (a) download the latest Mac OS for our computer (thus losing all sorts of saved settings, takes about half an hour) - so we could update to the latest OS for our IPAD (another hassle, just to attach a sound bar to our TV) - and then update Itunes (not an option, you have to do that) - and then download the Sonos App. Total installation time, especially if you are not a computer nerd, about two hours, with lots of frustration.

Fourth problem: you must have a working WiFi network in your home, and you need to know the pasword for it. From what I can see, if you just have a TV and no WiFi network, you cannot use this product.

Five: the company demands a lot of personal information from you (not an option, you can't continue without providing it). They demand your email address, and send a message which you need to open to install the product. It isn't clear what our privacy protection is, or what they will do with the information or my email address. Good luck, - hope they don't sell it to a marketting company or the Russians.

Six: You must also agree to a very complicated user agreement which filled at least 10 screens of our IPAD. We would have had to sit down at the kitchen table for about half an hour to read it. If you don't agree, then I guess you have to ship the unit back. It won't work unless you give in. Nobody reads all that legal crap, so we agree, without knowing what we agreed to. This matters if you are going to use Alexa, because the speakers will be listening to you in your home.

Seven: during the setup, the Sonos App tells us not to worry about error messages that will show up on the screen during setup. They promise later in the installation they will tell you how to avoid such messages when using your TV. But that never happens. I arrived at "Finished" without ever being offered such a process. So now when we raise or lower the volume, a box saying "Not Available!" comes on the screen, and stays there for about 8 seconds, while you are watching a movie, or trying to see your game on TV. No hint how to get rid of that. Nothing on the SONOS web site about that either.

Eight: Your TV has to be pretty new-ish to get the full voice-control to work. Specifically, your TV must have an HDMI port saying "ARC" on it. I could not find one on our Samsung Smart TV (8 years old). I tried to Google my Samsung model to confirm no ARC input port, but Samsung is a jumble of info and doesn't say. There is no easy way to search and find out if your TV model has ARC. SONOS doesn't help with that either.

If you don't have ARC port, then SONOS does provide you with a little cable to convert HDMI to an optical connection. Our TV has that. But nothing in their advertising warns me that some of the voice control available through Alexa will NOT work when using an optical connection.

Bottom line: if you have an older TV (no ARC port) you will get less than they advertised.

Nine: the SONOS advertising says it comes with Alexa. Not really. As far as I can see, it is Alexa-able, but there is no Alexa with it. You have to sign up for Alexa through Amazon, and then go through another set up procedure. That is not explained in the advertising, and I found that misleading.

Did I mention the plug will fall out if you breath on it?

This was an experiment for me. I live in a downtown condo and don't have a lot of room. I needed to upgrade my receiver and decided to try this for a while and have been pleasantly surprised. I think I will still add a couple of play 5 speakers or a sub to really help with music, but this has been wonder experience so far. I gained so much space back in my den! You can even add a couple play 1 (or possibly new Ikea symphonisk) speakers to make a 5.0 of 5.1 setup.

Would reccomend for sure. Hoping for an update on then play bar to add an arc hdmi port this week.
