Versatile device to ask questions, as alarm clock, to call someone, for notifications, to play music
This is my first time owning an Amazon Echo device (although other members of my family and friends have them, and I've used it in that manner).Setting up the device took a bit of time, but was not difficult. I downloaded the Amazon Alexa app, and followed the instructions. Then, I plugged the USB cable into the port on the Echo device, and into the power outlet.I've now used my own Echo for the past several weeks. It is responsive, able to pick up my questions from anywhere in the room where the Echo is located, as long as I talk loud enough if I am far away.I love that I can listen to free music. For example, I say, "...Alexa, play 80s music..." and it plays until I tell it to turn off. And, if I want a particular song or a particular musician, then I can subscribe to the music service. I can tell Alexa to turn up/down the volume, or I can press the (+) or (-) button on the device itself to turn up/down the volume.I like that I can use Echo as an alarm clock. It's great to have Echo remind me to do something, such as "...Alexa, remind me to watch a TV program at 9 pm..."It's convenient to get the local weather.I love that I can call another person while using Echo. When my Amazon packages arrive (either to the house, or to my PO Box), I am notified by the light on the Echo flashing (this tells me there is a notification). Once I tell Alexa to give me notifications, she says that a package has arrive. Most of my questions can be answered. When Alexa doesn't know an answer, it says something like, "...hmmm, I am not sure...."I am still learning more about what other things that Amazon/Alexa can do.All in all, I am quite glad I got it!
I must be one of the last converts to buy an Alexa device. Admittedly, I resisted doing so forever. I considered it a lazy man's way of doing tasks. Little did I know how convenient, helpful, and indispensable my little Echo Dot could be. I finally bit the bullet before Christmas and got the new Plum color, which is more of a soft mauve and perfectly suits my decor. The tiny size can be discreetly placed, barely noticeable, and fits literally anywhere. I was instantly so smitten with it that I got a Smart Plug and an unlimited Amazon music subscription. As a component stereo snob, nothing compares to vinyl or CDs and an equalizer. But, for what it is and its size, the sound is totally fine for when I want to play music that I don't already own or listen to conveniently in that area of the house.
I've not even begun to scratch the surface of the Dot's capabilities, which I'm really looking forward to as "she" and I grow together. At this point, there are only two things of note:
1) If you are at all concerned about privacy (which I am), there are a couple steps you can take. Besides turning herself on whenever she hears her name, Alexa is turned on whenever there is a notification -- which means she is listening and recording in the background. You can turn her off at any time, by saying "Alexa, mute." I do this often. At the end of the day, or at any time, you can also tell her to delete the day's (or all) recording history. You can also change Alexa's name, especially to something obscure that would never come out in normal conversation or on the TV. So many times, whenever name is mentioned on TV or in conversation, she turns on and you must be aware of that. There's a blue ring on the dot when she turns on, a yellow ring when there's a notification, but no colored ring when she hears her name and she remains silent waiting for a request ... but always recording what's in the background. You just need to be vigilant about turning her off for private conversations or until you have a request.
2) I've noticed that Alexa doesn't always understand requests to play music. She didn't recognize an artist's particular album, or a request for an artist's "ballads", or movie soundtracks. Also, a request for an artist's songs included a lot of Christmas songs and it isn't Christmas. I found these anomalies odd because of Amazon's popular and inclusive music subscription service, of which I'm now a member. When she doesn't understand a request, I usually just give up and turn her off. Maybe she'll learn over time or requires more programming, but it's disappointing to pay for a music subscription and Alexa doesn't understand many of my requests.
Overall, I'm ecstatic with the Echo Dot and should have bought another one, which I'll probably do in the near future after I become more proficient at using it.
I am using it for a alarm clock, you just say (alexa set alarm for 7:am. ) Then you have options, I have it give the date The days weather forecast and then go to the morning news. The sound quality is surprisingly good, sounds great. You have a number options for music, many are free but you have limitations. If you say ( Alexa play music by the doors ) it will play a great song that it choses but then it will play other random tunes. So I've decided the best way to go is to do the Amazon. I over a year I will order many things from Amazon so doing the Amazon prime with the free shipping makes sense to me. For a year it's aprox$100. Plus you get the prime tv app. If you just do the music it's 3.99 a month or$50 a year. But I also use sirius xm from my car on it works great. Just say alexa play sirius classic vinyl. I have ordered one of the light dimmers for it but I haven't tried it out yet. Over all it's been a good experience, work's great, sounds great. I'm looking forward to expanding the use of it for a really smart home that's upto date. Great new addition to my set up it's very functional and user friendly.

I love the sound quality of the dot 3rd gen. The look is modern and sleek and the app is easy to use and integrate with other smart features. I’m still working through some things, but there are many things to explore. I’m ready to buy two more for the rest of my house. Two Phillips Smart Hue bulbs came with the echo dot as a bundle special at a great price (39.99) so I’m waiting for it to come around again before buying two more dots. The key to using the bulbs is to download the Phillips Hue app and Alexa can turn on/off and brighten/dim my lamp which I LOVE. NO hub required! :) I have a Roku smart tv and am able to turn tv on and off but still trying to learn more navigation through the Roku feature. I think Roku needs to work out a few bugs but am glad to be able to turn it on and off just by asking Alexa. There are so many uses for the dot. I was afraid I would use it much because my phone can do many of the same things but I find myself using Alexa for so much more. This is amazing technology at a great price. I’m a total novice to smart home technology and I had no trouble getting everything started (after a couple of YouTube videos).
I finally purchased an Echo Dot on April 17, 2020 after hearing a friend say how useful it was. Well, after a week of using the Dot I ordered two more. I was very impressed with the selection of music from Amazon. Think of an obscure song from decades ago - no problem, Amazon plays it! The sound quality is very good for a small speaker and the voice recognition is amazingly good. Beyond the music library, the Dot is essentially an encyclopedia as it can quickly surf the web and read you the answer, This has been very important for homework use during our recent pandemic. The Dot also has many amusing features to help pass the time during our stay-at-home orders. Try the Question of the Day or Jeopardy. Try the podcasts or trivia or the reading of Kindle books or Audible. And, for a laugh, ask Alexa to sing you a song and you will get a tune about a disembodied voice assistant. We have been so happy with this as a weather reporter, alarm clock, timer, etc., that we ordered them for family members. If you are on the fence about this handy device, take a chance and you will find many useful purposes for it. I even purchased the wifi electrical outlet to add voice control to a lamp to help when I take the dogs out at night. With more accessories coming, I look forward to seeing how this helps with simple tasks around the house.
