I did not know what to do with the whole DOOM AND GLOOM DON'T BUY RECOMMENDATIONS...
BLUF - I bought it, it works well, no problems. Details - Ok, I am a Computer Engineer and even if I was not, I am no stranger to this type of equipment. Companies make promises that sometimes they cannot keep and know that there products won't continue to operate when the underlying stuff... broadcasting technologies, change. I think we are good. The Digital TV is scheduled to be migrating to a new technology... but they say that the current technology will be working in parallel. Also, the new tech seems to be more marketing and profit driven; don't know if it will even come to market. BTW an antenna does come with the device but most people who bought it also bought the "Chaowei Digital TV Antenna-DVB66 Portable Indoor Outdoor TV Antenna with Magnetic Base,16.5ft Long Cable,Omnidirectional Receiving-Support 4K 1080P TV" antenna. It was cheap and I bought it too. The dongle was in the box, a code for the Eye 3 and Eye 4 software, their little antenna (glad I bought what I did) and an adapter to go from the rest of the world's TV cable connector to the US standard one. SW: 2 licenses included. EyeTV 3 (for older 32-bit Macs) and Eye TV 4 for newer 64-bit Macs (to include Apple Silicon). The Eye TV 4, from what I read, is less full featured than the Eye 3, but El Gato sold the product to a Chinese company and I think they did not want to spend the money to update it, but it works. Installation was self-explantory (HW and SW). I found 87 channels (1st pic) and took a quick vid of the screen (1st vid). Not the best...used my iPhone to vid my monitor. Look at the screen capture of the weather on my local ABC affiliate which was done via the Mac. The 2nd pic shows some of the channels. I live in Central Florida, which is flat, and is the only reason I attribute for getting so many Channels. This is a plain and simple fact of geography. Channels in different geographical topology will vary. You can schedule a show to record... or you can hit record now. you can pause the TV... and when enough has spooled, you can fast forward through the commercials. I am using a 2013 Mac Pro (AKA Trashcan (6 core Xeon, 64 GBs RAM). If you see the vid, is what kind of jerky, only because I was rendering a video in the background. A larger clip that I recorded turned out great. I just had to make sure that I had closed a bunch of other things that I left open. ;-) Anyway, you can record your channels and export them to video files. If I have a need I while convert them to use the H.265 HEVC codec and probably run them through a program like Video Enhance AI... but the weather pic shows that the video quality is very nice. Although people who used the old El Gato TV and were used to EyeTV 3 complain with what they got now, I received what I paid for. It works right out of the box. I had a license code that I used, and it is up and running. The only thing is that the EPG (Elect Prog. Guide) is a free 1 month deal. Supposedly there is another guide that I will have to spend some time and see how to get it up and running. Even if I have to get a subscription... I would do it provided it was not 100$ a year. LOL. This met my needs and I think that I will get my use out of it. Worth the money I paid for. The only thing I can think of is that some of the issues that people had in the past were recently ironed out. For Instance..I downloaded an updated version of the SW. That could be a big deal. Also, people said that the code was missing. did not get an e-mail with the license code in it... it was in the box. Hope you have an experience like I had and that it works for you. PS...did not try this on a PC... so I cannot speak for that although it is supposed to work. Good Luck.Update: The latest version of the EyeTV 4 has issues with a complete EPG. I assume they will correct it in an updated version. Only some channels are showing up with EPG information. i am trying to use other systems to put together my own EPG using a custom configuration that I am taking from the channels I am receiving but it is a work in progress. Still, even without the full EPG, this is a very useful product and fits my needs.
