In pursuit of mold elimination, my significant other decided that the window AC units weren't getting the job done.
So, she decided that de-humidifying was the way to go.
Well, the first complication was delivery.
This critter is too big to rebox.
So, they didn't.
The delivery service showed it no mercy.
To be fair, this thing may have spent the last 12 months flat on a concrete floor some where in Mexifornia.
That tends to damp soak the bottoms of boxes.
Which could explain why this box had no bottom and most of the Styrofoam was falling out.
Still, as a testament to the units design, it appears to have survived.
Now, dehumidifying has a place and purpose... just not a terribly energy efficient one.
They have a compressor with a chiller that functions below the dew point in a room.
That pulls moisture out of the air, which collects in a bucket, which you have to empty on a regular basis.
This unit has a pump, which allows you to pump it some short distance (~ 16 feet or so).
The cooler cools, the pump pumps - what more could you ask for.
Well, running a dehumidifier is a lot like plopping down a window AC in the middle of the room at running that (with or without the pump).
There is zero net gain in cooling - plus you have the ?benefit? of the operational heat.
The humidity goes down for two reasons.
One, the moisture "is" being pumped overboard somewhere.
Two, the waste heat is raising the temperature of the room.
The higher the temperature = the more moisture the air can hold.
Which statistically, drives the Percentage Number down.
What could have been a ~ 70 degree, clammy, moldy room - becomes, an 88 degree, much drier, yet still noticeably moldy room.
Ergo, you still have to run the AC that was considered part of the problem to begin with.
I expect that the Greenies reading this far - by now - are apoplectic.
What can I say - it's not as bad as those millions of acres of Mexifornia that are going up in smoke.
Think relatively.
Ok, - so - now, we have our "solution".
The de-humidifier is pumping away ((dumping its heat inside).
The AC is whirling along (dumping more moisture and its heat and the dehumidifier's heat - outside).
The electric meter is spinning its bearings out.
The electric co-op is happy.
The humidity "has" gone down.
The de-humidifier has also repelled Big Foot and Unicorns.
The mold lives on, mildly pissed off.
So I dealt the the grading problem and got this dehumidifier. Now my basement is pretty dry most of the time, and I didn't have to throw out half of my belongings. A friend of mine payed over a thousand for her dehumidifier, so I feel like I did pretty well here.
I did set it up to pump water outside, and the line goes JUST far enough for me to rout it a few feet downhill of my foundation. I could probably find more line and a way to attach it at the hardware store if I felt like doing the research.
