Jabra's latest generation of Bluetooth headphones are consistently strong contenders on the premium end of the market. The Elite Active 45e wireless earbuds are no exception.-=FIT & COMFORT=-Athletic earbuds tend to have a more robust footprint, because they're designed to hook into your ear in a way that remains stable even during vigorous activity. In addition, they often have a connecting cable that goes across the back of your neck. The larger size can help with both bass performance and battery life, and the connecting cable means the earbuds don't lose connection with each other.The tradeoff is that you constantly have something resting on the back of your neck and hooked over your ears. For those who find that annoying, any earbuds in this style will be problematic. I'm not bothered by the bulk, however, and I really like the extra stability.The bendable hooks are easy to shape around the ear, and still leave room for eyeglasses or protective eyewear. The do naturally push outward slightly against the upper earlobe, even without glasses on. The earbuds themselves seem to fit best if you put them in at an angle and then rotate them about 45 degrees toward your face. The earbuds are surprisingly light, and I found it easy to forget they were there once properly situated.The actual rubber eartips, however, are one-size-fits-all. They rest in the ear without fully sealing it off. I prefer that style fit, especially since it allows for me to keep situational awareness while exercising.-=PAIRING=-Pairing was virtually instantaneous, and I had no trouble maintaining the connection to my nearby phone.-=SOUND QUALITY=-The audio performance was quite good. Voice conversations sound crisp and clear, and music had a nice depth a clarity across the audio range. Vocals in mids and highs were easy to distinguish. The bass was definitely there, especially when tweaked with the Sound+ Android app, but was not overwhelming.The open eartips are intended to allow you to be aware of ambient sounds while exercising, which is my strong presence living in a large city. The downside is that there is virtually no noise isolation or passive noise cancellation with these earbuds. I haven't lowered the rating, because this is by design.I lent the earbuds to a friend and had him call me to test the mic. As with every Jabra headset I've used, the clarity was outstanding.-=CONTROLS=-The Jabra Sound+ app has a handy graphic for the controls, which I screenshot here. The larger footprint of the earbuds made it very easy to find and operate the controls, all of which I found to be intuitive.The Sound+ app from recognized the earbuds immediately. It offers an equalizer with five frequency ranges, but I didn't find it necessary. When I experimented with it, subtle changes seemed to improve the sound quality, but dramatic ones rendered the audio tinny.You can also use the Sound+ app to allow access to Alexa as your voice assistant. That experience was consistent with the Alexa home devices.-=BATTERY LIFE=-I was not successfully able to kill the battery, so I see no reason to quibble with the claimed 9 hours of battery life.-=OVERALL=-The fit and style of these earbuds is a matter of taste. If you like over-the-ear hooks and tips that rest in your ear without sealing off the ear canal, these are an outstanding choice. The sound quality and microphone are excellent, and the controls are easy and intuitive. Just keep in mind that these are designed NOT to isolate sound or provide noise cancellation. As with most Jabra products, you will pay a premium, but you will also get premium performance.
