-controller pairing is saved on the adapter’s local memory, not the host device. you can swap one controller between PCs/switch/etc by simply moving the adapter between their ports.
-controller mapping and emulation is done onboard. on windows, it automatically converts my DS5 inputs to xbox inputs, which provides maximum compatibility. on switch, it converts them to a switch pro controller.
-pairing is fast. really fast. the DS5 is my favorite controller ever, but the pairing (and re-pairing) process with it for windows bluetooth can be…frustrating. incredibly so. this removes that issue entirely. it automatically finds the closest controller in bluetooth pairing mode and snatches it up, no weird extra drivers (or sudden and mysterious lack thereof) to worry about.
-plug and play. literally no setup required other than the pairing process. at least on switch and PC.
-mapping software. i have yet to use this, but will very soon and will update this review asap. i’m hoping it saves the settings to the adapter itself, not the PC. i imagine it does.
-no noticeable difference in latency between the 8bitdo’s bluetooth connection (and subsequent input processing) and a direct bluetooth connection via windows settings.
this thing is awesome and it’s a ton of functionality, quality of life, and compatibility packed into a small red or brown plastic brick. it’s more than fairly priced considering the ease of use, reliability, and performance. if you have any issues with your PC’s onboard bluetooth and your controller, or want to use an unsupported controller for the switch, this is all you need. the design is also unique, and it stands apart from similar adapters.
If you're using an 8bitdo controller make sure to run the firmware updater, this dongle works fine under windows 10 and X-Input. No latency issues, no controller issues, nothing. It works as expected, and it works and feels just as it does when it is wired. Barring extreme latencyphobes I saw no noticeable lag, it felt no different to my DS4 in these regards. I am generally sensitive to latency, but in the world of wireless controllers you adapt quick since its not 'heavy' or sluggish anymore. The advancements of modern technology, yada yada.
That said you need to run steams identify config to make it work properly with no latency and no button issues. For some reason prior to doing this I could only use the left analog stick and like 1 button. The analog stick would jump 2-3 options, and the button had dire input lag. When running identify it lets you map all of the buttons on the controller, and then you can label it as whatever you please (I just left it default to Xbox One Controller, its fine). Funny thing is, all you're doing is mapping the buttons and viola no pain or suffering.
Reason for not using generic usb bt dongle? For one I dont know if it even works with the 8bitdo controller. Secondly you need very good line of sight, a leg, an arm, or even a wire can hamper your connection. Thirdly latency when using them, since they need perfect line of sight can go from 5ms to 50ms(DS4Windows Latency Meter) in a heart beat resulting in noticeable input lag. I got a generic dongle for my DS4 controller since the official dongle broke, and hooo boy was I a sad sad panda. (PC's and BT, something that never developed properly. Maybe some laptops have good BT receivers). This 8bitdo dongle should work with a DS4, but I couldn't be arsed to test that, simply because I find the SN30 Pro+ to be quite a bit superior in many ways other than rumble. Also this dongle doesn't let you use motion controls wirelessly, the official Sony BT Dongle does. Motion control might not seem important, but when you find a game that you can map it to, you'll miss it(like ED). If I do connect my DS4, because curiosity always bites, i'll update if there are any problems.
