First off we are an apple family so this was a huge change for us to try. Our iPad flew off the roof of our car so I went to look for a replacement for our 2.5 year old. The price of this was very enticing so we tried it out. I couldn’t stand it at first since it’s an android and it made no sense to me. We couldn’t get YouTube kids either, so we decided to send it back. Well let me tell you, all weekend long while I had it boxed up and ready to go, our little girl kept asking for her tablet “piiiiiink??”for one, I couldn’t find a baby game similar to one she was already really into on the App Store, at least not a free one. So we decided to give it another try because kids these days can figure things out and adapt way better than we can. I’m glad we kept it. The amazon free time alone is worth it because she has access to hundreds if not thousands of free games. Free, and fully unlocked, no need to “upgrade to the full version” like in the App Store.
Pros: unlimited free games, huge variety of games and you can filter the age range so there’s games that they can understand. You can add any apps you want from the parents side of the device. It’s easy to use for our toddler. The case is one of the most protective cases you can find. The stand is sturdy. It works great in offline mode for travel, you’re just limited to the games already downloaded. The charge is decent, I just have to remember to put it in the charger before bed and a full charge lasts all day. Screen quality is fine, no complaints. Peppa pig is her favorite and there’s so many peppa pig games on here, which is great because on the App Store you have to pay 3.99 each!
Cons: you cannot put kids YouTube on here! You can put regular YouTube though and I just put it on restrictive mode to not play mature content. It’s a little annoying because there are still ads on YouTube and she’ll either click on them or she’ll choose a new video because she doesn’t understand you have to wait for the ad. She doesn’t seem to care though she still watches her little videos. One problem I found was that if she clicks on anything it will download so the free space runs out quick and I have to go through and delete apps she doesn’t use. I wish the menus were a little better set up, it shows all the recently played stuff at the top so even if I delete an app it still shows in the recent and if she clicks on it, it will redownload. I thought it was overwhelming at first how she had access to so many titles because she was adding anything with a cute picture. But now she has a huge variety of games she’s plays so it’s not that bad I guess.
Overall I’m very happy with the product, because if our daughter loves it then that’s what matters. I’m not the one who uses it. If a game is too difficult for her she just chooses something else.
UPDATE: my husband left this on the roof of our car just like our iPad! The thing bounced off the highway into the bushes without a scratch on it. I give 5 stars for the case alone
As to the software, it's easy to use, no surprises there. (Little biased Android fan here btw. lol) FreeTime layout took a little getting used to and I feel like the search could be more refined, but it's not bad by any means. I liked that you can set it for certain ages and change them as your child matures. I set ours for 2-5 and haven't seen any "questionable" content in the available apps/books/videos that my toddler can scroll through. It's nice for when you're cooking or doing anything that takes a few minutes and can't be right there going, "no, mommy doesn't want you to watch that weird person pick boogers and make slime out of it!". Also lets you decide if the kid's profile can make purchases or not, so no more surprise $1.99 purchases. And, my personal favorite, you can set goals for reading and educational time, even making it where the child can't play-play until they've met the goals. Or you can set it where the kid profile can only be used between certain times, such as 3pm to 5pm or any other range you want.
Now for the hardware! The 7 inch screen is the perfect size for a toddler/younger kid and the "kid proof" case it comes with is nice (takes a lot of prying to get the tablet out of the case and I don't see the average little one managing it by themselves), seems to be a nice thickness for little hands to hold onto as well. Our toddler is a very careful kid, but even she tended to struggle to keep hold of tablets she'd handled before this one, this one's yet to slip out of her grasp while she's playing. Touch screen responds well and battery lasts about 6 hours at full screen brightness from what I've calculated.
Soooo, 9.8/10 recommend!
