Save your money and sanity: buy an i7+ instead
Update: The performance of this robot has only gotten worse. We have renamed it "Marvin", after the robot in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. "Marvin is the failed prototype of Sirius Cybernetics GPP (Genuine People Personalities) programme and due to unresolved flaws in his programming he is stuck with the intelligence to do great things but the will and drive to do very little." Fitting.---We own two iRobot i7+s and previously a 960. We recently acquired the s9+, hoping it would help more with our cat allergies and my cleanliness OCD. Our experience:0) The s9 is slightly smaller than the i7, so it fits a little better under furniture. [GOOD]1) The s9 top load bin and filter design is much improved over the i7+. It is much easier to get to and change. We love this new design. BRAVO! [GREAT]2) The s9 maps and covers well. So does the i7. [GREAT]3) The s9 battery capacity is poor for large surface areas. It takes about 4-4.5 hours to do our main floor because it has to stop and recharge for almost 1.5 hours during the cleaning cycle. It's a slight improvement on the i7+. [NEEDS IMPROVEMENT]4) The s9 traverses between hardwood and thick rugs with ease (note: we have NO rugs with fringe edges). It automatically increases the suction when it detects it's on a rug. [GOOD]5) The s9 is great at picking up fine cat hair on hardwood floors. So is the i7. [GOOD]6) The s9 performs the same with fine cat hair on rugs as does the i7. Even with spot clean and setting the s9 to the highest level of suction, it goes round and round and doesn't pick anything up. If we're lucky, it rolls the cat hair into strings that we then have to manually pick up. [NEEDS SERIOUS IMPROVEMENT]7) The s9 has a much larger filter than does the i7. We cannot believe the amount of fine grained stuff we collect in this thing (all I have to do is clean the filter in front of someone, and they immediately want to buy one!) I'm not sure that it does better than the i7, however. I'd have to do a comparison test. [GREAT]8) The s9 is advertised to have an "anti-allergen" feature, but this seems to be nothing more than the filter system, which the i7 has. Both have "high-efficiency HEPA-style (not HEPA) filters which capture 99% of dirt and filter down to 10 microns." True-HEPA which filters down to 0.3 microns. [NEEDS IMPROVEMENT -- as in, REAL HEPA filters]9) The s9 brushes curl under and sheer off entirely, easily and frequently. The i7 brushes are champs. [UNACCEPTABLE]10) The s9 rubber rollers seem to be not be as durable as the i7 brushes. They easily are cut/cracked. [NEEDS IMPROVEMENT]11) The s9 frequently gets stuck. Badly. It apparently thinks it needs to climb the legs on our dining room table and gets "stuck on a cliff". Or it goes between the center legs, gets wedged, and keeps trying to pull through to the point that it takes force to pull it back out. Really? We've started referring to the s9 as "Jarvis, the stupid robot." [UNACCEPTABLE]Rating: C--Overall: we are really REALLY disappointed in the s9+. It was advertised as being great for pet hair and allergies, and yet, it's really not unless the hair is on hardwood. In all, we simply do not see $400 of added value in the s9+. Save your money and buy the i7+.UPDATE: I have to give iRobot customer support a big thumbs up. They replaced the original unit at no cost whatsoever. Given that, I'm increasing the rating by one star. I will also share the following Roomba S9 experiment and results.---Research questions:* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pets?* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pet "droppings"?* Is a Roomba S9+ strong enough to suck in a cat's tail? (If the Q1 answer is 'no', then this question is moot.)Experiment methodology: * Acquire 2 long haired cats with different personalities. One must be very skittish, and the other head strong and stubborn.* Allow cats to get familiar with the environment and claim it as their kingdoms. * Program a Roomba S9+ to automatically run three times per day, each in different parts of the house. This is important because, for example, we want to determine if dropping location makes any difference (e.g., near the litter box vs. in the middle of the carpet).* Let the Roomba run for months on end and observe.Data to collect:* Contents of home base and S9 waste bins.* Debris on S9 (particularly in the rollers and wheels).* Video of cat behavior. Results:* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pets? NO. The S9 runs right into pets. And in fact, cats are able to jump on its back and take a free ride around the house.* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pet "droppings"? NO. Not only didn’t the S9 evade the droppings, but it coated the wheels, rollers, and side brush and then ingested the droppings and completely covered the circuit board. A through cleaning resulted in months of circuit board errors, causing it to undock and then die in the middle of the floor. This delayed the experiment. Another S9 was acquired to complete the experiment.* Is a Roomba S9+ strong enough to suck in a cat's tail? YES. If an S9 makes contact with a cat's tail, it will promptly suck it up into the rollers, which will set the cat off. An (probably not so much) unexpected result is that attempts to free the cat from the Roomba should be done with care, perhaps wearing oven mitts and a catcher's mask. Updating flawed methodology that did not take human safety into account.

Bought this on Prime day since it was on sale and I love it. I was concerned that it wouldn't be able to go over a small hump in the floor, possibly thinking it was a threshold, but nope, it drove right over it. It maneuvers well through the house.

Pros
- Cleans in a grid pattern - see photo of nice lines left in carpet
- Travels from room to room whether it's over carpet or vinyl.
- Has good suction. I have thick/dense carpet and it does a good as my stand up vacuum
- Very thorough. Does a good job of going around table legs (see photo with circle path around table leg) and even underneath couches that have a flap at the bottom
- Can work in connection with the Bravva mop
- You can direct it to clean specific rooms and stay out of others
- When you select the rooms you want to clean, it gives an estimate of the time it takes to complete it.
- You can choose from 3 suction levels
- It empties itself, so no handling the dust can
- No bad smell like my old vacuum

Cons
- Some rooms it vacuums against the grain of the carpet. For one room, I was able to place a divider in that room using the app so that it mapped the room differently.
- It has had about 3 tech glitches, but that is expected because tech isn’t perfect. I either rebooted the bot, closed and reopened the app or gave it time to sit and then it worked properly.
- When it does the hallway it goes over the thresholds to get the edges and slightly enters the other rooms. This is a con if it goes into a room where you don't want to be disturbed or go into a room where it gets stuck. So you h have to remember to close the doors. The only threshold that it has a problem going over is the bathroom (that threshold needs adjustment, not the bots fault) and if it's cleaning the hall it will go over it and then can't drive back out. There is a setting that says to get as close to the edge without touching edges but I haven't tried it yet to see if that helps.

- October 2023 Update -
Overall I'm still happy with this but since writing the initial review the vacuum has been giving me a bin error regularly since mid-September even after it is thoroughly cleaned. The app says they are working on a fix coming out in Oct but I've yet to see it happen.

The media could not be loaded.
I had a neato for 7 years or so but finally decided to upgrade it, after shopping around I took the plunge on my first roomba.

To repeat many other reviews, this is a pretty flawed expensive device. I have a small, straightforward studio apartment, so it should be ideal for robot vacuums. But this guy gets stuck on nothing, gets lost for no reason, and fails to complete the job on a fairly regular basis. Weirdly, when I first got it, it worked great. It was consistently excellent for 4 months, but it has failed to complete a job since early February and I have no idea why. I've done all the troubleshooting, but to no avail. Contrary to other reviews, no one at iRobot has responded to my multiple e-mails and troubleshooting tickets. Whatever the failure is, it appears to be with the software's mapping feature, which seems to confuse to device more than help it (see the pictures for the accurate mapping in the first months, to the completely crazy mapping of its failed jobs these last few months).

March 1, 2021 - still struggling with this stupid thing; just gets more troublesome. Firstly, setting up the maps (again!) is cumbersome. When you delete the map and try to make it relearn your space, it requires 3 tries, so that's what I'd do, but sometimes one of those tries would be wildly off base, so I'd delete it so it wasn't screwing up the map. Ok that seems simple enough right? EXCEPT if its the 3rd try that's a crazy incorrect map, if it happens on the 3rd try it automatically saves it all and that's your map, no option to delete the bad pass or correct the map, your only option at that point is to reset the mapping function completely and start the 3 tries over again. I probably spent 6 months deleting bad passes/starting over/etc just getting to the point where my apartment is correctly mapped. But then here's the best part, AFTER you have a correct map saved and programmed, any time after that if the robot comes up with a crazy pass that gives it a wildly incorrect map, it REPROGRAMS the map to the crazy incorrect one! You can't delete it the bad pass, you can't correct the programmed map, it just says "you have an updated map" and you're stuck with it...what's the point of programming the map in the first place if its just going to screw it up with any one bad pass?!?! (for real, why isn't there just an option for me to correct or at least delete the incorrect parts of the map?)

So fine, the mapping function is a total waste, but maybe it still works like an old school robot vacuum, just move forward with suction, detect objects and move around them, going back and forth until its done? Nope! Without the map it appears to be totally helpless. It get los and stuck in areas where all it has to do is move to the left or the right, or my new favorite mishap, it finds a spot near the base and then just vacuums that single spot for an hour and a half until it says its battery is low. When I look at the map after its done, its not because it thought this was an especially dirty area, according to the map the robot appears to think its found a mile long section of my apartment that it has been going down (when in reality its just been sitting in one spot with the suction running - see attached video, it literally just sits there and does that until its battery runs down).

3.25.21: After relaying this behavior to iRobot, it was recommended I reboot the machine. After doing so, the machine continued to not work correctly. Because my machine was older than 1 year and not warrantied, iRobot's genuine advice was to buy a new one. No repair process, no diagnostics, they literally just sent me a link to drop another $1099.00 on a new machine because my 18 month old vacuum stopped working.

Stay away from this one, iRobot is clearly not ready to be utilizing the mapping function of robot vacuums, go with the cheaper "dumber" options or just a different brand and avoid this frustrating over priced model.

Side note, I took the neato vacuum I had been using for 7 years to my office and its still working just fine there, probably should have resisted the urge to upgrade and stuck with the tried and true device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well made.

We've had this for a while now and this is one fantastic little machine. We do have a dog and it manages to pick up all the hair. It does get hung up every once in a while in difficult spots but you get the alert that it needs help so you can assist. Most times, it figures the difficult spot out on it's own before you get to it. So very happy with it.

Vacuum works wonders, app works good, clean Dock can be switched on and connect with the robot vacuum only thing is the clean Dock is unable to clear the vacuum. Keep getting error message but roomba services can't help as this roomba isn't bought locally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works fantastic

Bought this to upgrade from a Shark AI self-empty and the Roomba is better in absolutely every way. Cleaning is far superior, and mapping is constantly self learning. 100% satisfied.
Bought extra wheels and brushes but have not had to replace any parts after 3 months of use (3x per week clean schedule)
