Disappointing software, but read this for solar tip

Disappointing software, but read this for solar tip
Tldr; the camera intelligence is hit or miss, I get way too many events even with settings adjusted and tweaked regularly. The image quality is very good. The larger Ring solar panel works with this (instructions below)! I live in WI and it keeps it charged!I live on a street that is moderately busy. The camera picks up 45 to 50 "motion events" per day, which are almost always cars going by. I have smart alerts turned on, which detects when a person walks by and only notifies me for those events. It is not very good at this. The most common problem is that it never detects the person at all. Sometimes it detects a person, but only detects it as a regular motion event rather than a person detection. WORST OF ALL, it has missed a fair share of detecting delivery people putting stuff on my porch. I'd estimate 30%-50% of the time!It also has the ability to put motion zones within the field of view, to limit the number of motion events. There are two levels of this: the first splits the field of view into quadrants of different sizes. The other is more advanced, allowing you to basically draw lines around the zone you want to monitor. For example, you want to ignore the sidewalk in front of your house but capture the walkway leading up to your house. The motion zone feature has never worked properly for me. Remember my busy street? I tried setting the advanced zone feature to ignore the street but it had zero effect on motion events. I thought maybe shadows from the passing cars were triggering it. Nope. It's just not very good at what it claims to do.My 3-star rating on this camera reflects its poor accuracy in detecting people. If a porch pirate struck my house, I would have 50/50 confidence that the camera would capture the event and, to me, that is borderline unacceptable.SOLAR POWERAre you like me, and read the poor reviews of the dinky solar panel for this unit? Well, Ring has a different solar panel with better reviews, but the problem is it doesn't directly connect to this camera because it has a Type E barrel connector while this camera has a micro USB. Read below and see pictures for a simple workaround to this.***Warning***This method involves cutting off the barrel connector on the solar panel which will nullify your warranty. Proceed at your own risk.As mentioned, the solar panel has a Type E, DC barrel connector. If you cut this off, you will expose two wires. These two wires can connect to the two screws on the back of the camera using the wiring harness that came with the camera. The same two screws that would have connected to your home's doorbell wires. You'll know if it's working when you open the app and check device health, it will say Solar Status 'Established'.I drilled a hole in the side of the base plate and added a rubber grommet to help keep water out.I installed the solar panel at the beginning of November on the front of my house (which faces South). It is late January and I have never had to charge the battery manually. The lowest I saw the battery meter get was 38% after more than a week of no sun. This is WAY better than searching for the special Ring screwdriver (for the security screw) to open up the battery compartment on a frigid WI winter day.

5.0 out of 5 stars It just works. Also plays well with other Ring devices.

We have this Video Doorbell 3 Plus installed as part of larger Ring system with a hardwired Pro model and a Spotlight cam too. We have had no problems with installation or usage. No Wi-Fi issues (thanks to Apple Airport Extreme mesh system). We like that the Ring devices can be linked together with the app, so motion detected on one can trigger recording on others. We chose this battery model because of lack of easy wiring at this specific location, but we like that we also have the option to hardwire it should we decide tackle that specific construction project.

We have been impressed by the field of view of the camera which we estimate is well over 100 feet wide. We have ours installed with the wedge facing downward. We still capture more sky than we expected, but again with such a wide angle lens, even moving it close to the ground would not change things much.

No comment or complaint on battery life so far. We use the device heavily and are in a climate with seasons, so we recommend having a spare battery to swap to keep the device online. No complaints because this is what you need to expect with outdoor battery devices. Our has been installed for about a month and a half and we are currently at 36% charge. It is advertised for 6 month life, but there are so many usage scenarios that a reasonable person should expect much variation. There are many settings and customizations to extend the battery life which we have opted not to use.
