About Sennheiser
Sennheiser is shaping the Future of Audio – a vision built on a 75-year history of innovation and a continued drive for excellence that is woven into our company’s DNA and culture. Around the world, our employees share this passion in the pursuit of the perfect sound, creating products that exceed expectations and set new benchmarks in audio.
MKE 400
Highly directional on-camera shotgun microphone
The MKE 400 combines portability and performance and sheds a whole new light on the way to capture audio for video. Features that were traditionally accessories - like a windscreen and shock-mount - are now fully integrated. A low-cut filter and 3-step gain sensitivity switch help to fine-tune your sound while shooting, and a headphone monitoring output with volume control helps to dial in that sound.
The MKE 400’s super-cardioid polar pattern and acoustic interference tube reject unwanted background noise and ensure the cleanest possible recordings for dialogue applications.
- Highly directional for isolated dialogue capture
- Compatible with DSLR/M cameras and mobile devices
- Two AAA batteries power the microphone for up to 100 hours
- Cold-shoe mount with quarter-20 thread allows for universal mounting
- Automatically powers on/off when connected to DSLR/M cameras
Record with confidence
All handheld cameras are susceptible to handling noise, so the MKE 400 features integrated wind protection and shock absorption. The MKE 400’s acoustic interference tube isolates sound directly in front of the microphone, providing presence and clarity for your subject in even the noisiest of environments.
Connectivity
In today’s world, your video recording is most likely not confined to one device, and your microphone doesn’t have to be either. Each MKE 400 includes 3.5 mm TRS and TRRS locking cables to be used with DSLR/M cameras or mobile devices.
Check your settings
Low-cut filter and 3-step gain sensitivity switch help to fine-tune your sound while shooting, and a headphone monitoring output with volume control helps to dial in that sound.
Included Accessory: Fur Windshield
In addition to the microphones’ built-in features, a furry windshield is included that is placed over the integrated windscreen for maximum wind protection.

Focus your soundThe MKE 400 features a super-cardioid polar pattern achieved by an acoustic interference tube, providing focus and detail while rejecting unwanted background noise. Ideal for vloggers and videographers alike, this highly directional microphone will enhance your audio and bring presence and clarity to your recordings. |
Before you start rollingOne of the most important steps when recording audio is to check your levels and monitor your sound. While some cameras have a headphone jack, not all do, and that’s where the headphone monitoring output comes into play. Plug any 3.5 mm headphone directly into the MKE 400 and use the integrated volume control to dial in your recordings. |
Also Available: MKE 400 Mobile KitThe MKE 400 Mobile Kit combines portability and performance for the ultimate vlogging experience. Upgrade your audio and your video with these three essential tools. (Mobile phone not included.) Main components of the the kit includes:

It’s very compact, auto on-off with the camera, and has a low pass filter option great quality!
Add in the best iPhone mount I’ve seen and a Manfrotto small tripod becomes quite good for panning, vlogging, and motion reduction.
I love this kit and recommend to everyone who’s automatically going to Rode or Deity products.
I'm glad I purchased this version instead of the smaller one because this unit will turn itself on as soon as you turn on the camera. With my other cheapo one, I kept the mic off to save on battery life and just forgot to turn it on when I switched the camera on to record. Luckily I caught it during the welcome and intro speeches.
Battery life seems to be pretty good. I haven't ran it until it died because that would be a bad thing while recording something. But I probably recorded about 1.5 hrs worth of video without any issues before just changing out the battery for the next program. When researching different brands, I actually preferred the replaceable battery mics, since I have rechargeable batteries and if I needed something quick, AAAs are easy to find.
Own older versions and this one is better.
Worth the $.
I don't care for the input cable being fixed to the microphone and doesn't give you the option of TRS or TRRS, which the less expensive mics in the MKE line offer both types of cable connections and do not fix the output from the microphone with only one option of TRS...! And for the price of this microphone you should get the two different options for connecting to a camera or connecting to your smartphone...! And I thought that the rejection of unwanted sound from the sides and back of microphone is not as well as it's described in the description!? The mic itself sounds good but it has too much bleeding from the sides and back and I do not like that the cable coming from the microphone is fixed and can't be replaced or swapped out for a TRRS connection if needed...??! The other MKE line of mics offer the ability to swap between TRS & TRRS and the cable is obviously not fixed to the mic itself.... this leaves too much of a window for kinking the cable or pulling on the cable and once that is damaged.... you can't even use the mic anymore unless you have it replaced or repaired, which might cost as much as the mic did...??! Poor design on the output cable from the microphone itself and for the price, you should get the dead cat that they designed for it, instead of having to spend another $50 for it...??! I don't understand why the more expensive model doesn't come with the dead cat and the different output cable options...?? Makes zero sense to me!
The one thing I wish it did have is a secondary safety channel like the Rode mic has. It's saved me more than once with low/loud speakers at events.
Note to GH6 users. There are 3 different settings for your mic in settings, you want to choose the option to POWER the mic from the camera and the auto on/off will work.
Great mic with unmatched sound quality when it worked, but horrible build quality it seems. Unfortunately, I found this out after 8 hours of shooting main events at a convention. Not my favorite way to figure out my gear malfunctioned under the pressures of one-and-done filming.
The non-replicable cord is my guess as to what's going on with the mic.
If my warranty claim goes smoothly, I'll change to 4 stars, if only for the headache of RMA claims. It really is a good mic, but reliability is much more important.
Top reviews from other countries
