Product Description
Humidor is the world's most versatile virtual reality headset that works with any 4-6" iPhone/android/windows smartphone to offer truly immersive 360° games, videos (watch 3d movies with big screen theater experience), photos and unique virtual reality experiences. It is compatible with over 300+ google cardboard iOS/android apps on apple app store and google play store. There is also a free humidor VR player iOS/android app to view normal 2D, 3D or 360° videos. Similar to oculus rift and Samsung gear VR, it is better than google cardboard (and similar devices) for its ergonomic, lightweight and well ventilated design which offers unparalleled comfort even for extended wear. Our custom designed VR lenses (which are 70% larger than google cardboard's) offer industry leading 100° field of view (FOV) and optical clarity to give you the best picture and immersive experience. Advanced optical adjustments allow you to fine-tune focus for nearsightedness and farsightedness, interpapillary distance (IPD) and immersion to cater to your viewing needs. Unlike oculus rift, you don't need to be tethered to the computer. It is wireless and battery-free to give you ultimate freedom of movement. It works with any smartphone, unlike Samsung gear VR which only works with select Samsung phones. Humidor is the most versatile VR headset and probably the best head mount display (HMD) for virtual reality. You won't regret it.

I first picked up a lesser headset from Sunnypeak as an entry into phone VR development. It worked as-advertised, but it was lacking in certain areas, especially the all important immersion factor. In particular, the FOV was too narrow so it was like looking through a box. Plus, getting the Sunnypeak phone mount working with my phone isn't so great, especially because sliding the phone in keeps shutting off the power on my Nexus5. Loose enough to slide in without turning the power off is TOO loose to hold properly. Not a good experience for demoing to others.
So after some comparison shopping and reading reviews, I bought this HOMiDO headset. I saw the description of the lens quality and the 100+ degree FOV, which was my baseline now that I had my VR apps running on the phone. I have the Oculus DK2 and after experimenting with the Sunnypeak, I was looking for a better phone headset that would get me closer to an Oculus experience.
Well, the HOMiDO combined with my Nexus5 seems to do the trick. In A/B comparison to the DK2, I am quite impressed with the HOMiDO. And setting aside what seems to be a comparable FOV and immersive feeling to a DK2, I like the image clarity of the Nexus5 through the HOMiDO lenses better than the integrated DK2.
The HOMiDO does a very nice job for accessible and immersive VR.
I also like the touch access to the screen though the nose hole. I can mount my phone (VERY easy through the spring clip), put the headset on and THEN launch my app of choice. I also like it that even mounted, I still have access to power and volume controls.
The strap is good quality, and the headset comes with a third optional top headstrap. All easily adjustable.
Another plus, I'm slightly nearsighted, but the lenses worked out of the box for my vision as well as for others who are NOT nearsighted. No futzing around from person to person to share the headset. Your mileage may vary, but for my mild near-sightedness, this clarity with no glasses is invaluable. The DK2 is kind of a pain in this regard. The HOMiDO does come with additional lens cones for nearsighted and farsighted people, but I didn't need to use them.
One mild complaint is that the headset may not be optimal for larger faces. It isn't painful like the Sunnypeak, so relatively speaking the HOMiDO is a breath of fresh air. But I can feel that it isn't QUITE right for my larger face. YMMV.
The HOMiDO framing and lenses work quite well "out of the box" with my Nexus' 5" screen. I don't know how well it will immerse you with something more like a 4" or 6" screen, but the 5" is great and fits the frame "just right".
Other than a mild fit issue with my face (not painful, just slightly noticeable), this one is a winner.
Okay, back to work on my VR apps!
First, let's talk about built quality. It has a nice strong elastic strap on the sides and adjustable non-elastic strap on top which is also good. The plastic headset itself is sturdy. The foam padding is soft and comfortable on my face but the foam is exposed. I expected for this pricing, it would at least have some kind of velour or pleather cover to protect the foam. The current foam probably start ripping after a few months of regular use. There are individual lens adjustments for each side. However, they might as well not be there as they offer pretty much zero movement (about 1mm). The IPD adjustment is functional, albeit a bit coarse. The phone holder itself is strong, there is a very low chance, if any, of phone falling out. However, that is also the problem since it is hard to insert and remove the phone, you'd worry about scratching the screen every time.
Functionality is what makes me want to return this and it is not entirely Homido's fault. I planned to use this for watching movies and gaming. While the lens offers a nice FOV, looking anywhere else beside straight ahead is blurry. Forget doing any kind of gaming that has text because you won't be able to read it. Even games that has zero text is not really playable either because everything is so blurry when it's not at the center of your view. Using a VR cinema, watching 2d movie was ok, but because the phone have to split the display and reduce the size of the actual video to fit so that you can see the whole video, it became extremely pixelated. There's really no point in watching video this way. Again, this is not really Homido's issue, it's more of the whole VR thing. There's not much real content out there. Pretty much you have a few demo that you can watch for a few min. Most of the VR video experience listed in Homido's own app don't even work. Many 3d videos are actually meant for a different 3d glasses or 3d tv, not side by side. 360 videos don't show up as side by side so I'm not even sure why they're in Homido's app.
After using this, I now realize why google put it in something as disposable as a piece of cardboard. There are absolutely no real and usable content that demands a lasting, quality headset.
Top reviews from other countries
To begin with, the Homido is well built and feels string yet still maintains extreme lightness. This headset will not push down on your nose and isn't at all heavy on the face, even with a phone inside. I've been using the Nexus 6p which is a huge phone and it doesn't make the headset heavy at all.
The phone slides inside of the clip art the front which is very strong so don't worry at all about your phone sliding out.
In the box you get an extra 2 sets of lenses, meaning you get a set of lenses for each eye type. This is such a huge advantage to this headset as not many others will offer such usabilities. On top of this, the headset allows for easy adjustment of the phones distance to the lens, to further improve experiences for people with impaired vision.
The strap is the most comfortable I've come across. As it's stretchy, it allows for easy sharing of the device and it means you don't have to tighten it every now and then. It also does a fantastic job of keeping the weight off of your face and evenly distributing the weight over your head, making out feel incredibly light.
One of the key things about this headset is the clarity of the lenses. It's insane for the price. Everything is visible and crystal clear.
The padding for the face is quite nice, it's a type of foam that's nice and lightweight but is also very comfortable even for long periods of use.
The final good thing about this headset is something that mostly goes unnoticed. The fact that it had vents in the headset is possibly what makes this headset stand out above the rest. Due to these vents, I got a longer battery life due to less overheating, and the lenses didn't fog up like on many other headsets.
Trying to pick fault with this device alone is quite difficult as it ticks all of the boxes. However it has to be done. I'll also be comparing the headset to its main competitor now as these aren't quite negatives, just some things that could be improved upon.
Th FOV (field of view) is at 100 degrees. This is above the majority of other headsets which sit at around 80. However after using the Freefly which has 120, there's a big difference. Due to being used to the Freefly, I found that being able to view the sides of the screen was slightly annoying and can ruin immersion.
Also, the padding on the face could be nicer, the Freefly uses leather and it's just way more comfortable. However, the Homido is a load better than cheaper models.
All in all, as a developer, I've decided to go with the Homido as my main headset for cardboard, as it's benefits make it much better than its competition for sharing and accessibility. Also, not having to wipe fog off of the lenses is a blessing.
