I'm only about 7 or 8 hours in, but it's so good I'm 90% sure my 5-star rating will stand, and I will update this review regardless when I finish the game. There is one thing that could definitely knock my score down to 4, but it doesn't seem likely. For that to happen, they would have to have left out a key element that has always been a staple of the Ratchet & Clank series. I'm sure it's coming up, I just need to play enough to work my way there. Long as it's in there, this game *will* be everything I'd hoped for.
So, if you're already a fan of the series, then don't hesitate to buy it. Stop reading this right now and just buy it. I'm a long-time fan of the titular Lombax/bot duo, my favorite installments being A Crack in Time, Up Your Arsenal, and Going Commando. I'm not sure which I'd call the better between Arsenal and Commando, there are things I love about each, but these are generally regarded as three of the best games from the series, and trust me when I say that the 2016 Ratchet & Clank is, so far, every bit their equal. In fact, it's starting to look like it may claim my top spot away from A Crack in Time.
The weapons are an assortment of old favorites and new classics. The level design is tight. The graphics are gorgeous (more on that later). The humor is as goofy and self-aware as ever, with a few nice in-jokes and references for longtime fans.
The only complaint I could see coming from a fan of the series is that it doesn't really break much new ground. It will be mostly familiar gameplay with a few new tweaks and twists here and there, but nothing radically different from what you've seen before. I'm completely OK with this. All I need is more of that classic, tried-and-true gameplay and dumb jokes that I can't help but laugh at. I wanted a good, old-fashioned, Ratchet & Clank game for the PS4, and I got it. So I'm not making that complaint, but I could see how someone else might.
Now, If you're new the series but thinking about picking this up, I still recommend it. Don't write it off as a kid's game just because it's cartoony and colorful. Sure, my kids grew up playing this series, but I was in my 30's when I started, 46 now, and have loved the vast majority of them. They're just plain fun, and this is one of the best, possibly the very best, in the series. No matter what it looks like, a fun game should be appreciated by people of any age. But if you think anything that isn't dark and bloody is for little kids, well, you're missing out on a lot of great stuff, but I'm sure everybody thinks you're cool at your junior high school.
Trouble is, I've been playing these for so long that it's hard for me to imagine what it would be like to have this entry as an introduction to the series. On the one side, it's retelling the story of the original game (which also works for me, since it's the only one I haven't played), so it's not like you'll be lost in the story. Not at all. However, the style of play does switch around significantly in a few parts of the game, and it throws some of these at you fairly early on. A new player may (and again, I say "may", I don't know for sure) be a little overwhelmed. "What the hell? I was just doing this, now I'm doing this?" That shouldn't last too long though, because no matter what, it's all fun. It will soon become apparent that the bulk of the game is the standard platform shooting action, and the different styles sprinkled throughout will be welcome diversions.
Well, that covers old players and new, but maybe you're wondering if you should get this for your kids. Again, I say yes. My kids loved these games as children and are enjoying this one just as much as teenagers. I know I just spent a long time pointing out that it wasn't kids-only, but it is still kid-friendly. I suppose if you're really overprotective, you may have an issue with some of the humor. There might be a few double entendres and situations that older players will pick up a suggestive side to. Think about classic Warner Bros. cartoons, how there were jokes they threw in for the grown-ups. Nothing too shocking, and they'll go right over young players' heads.
That, and there are guns. A lot of guns. They say this game is an action platformer, but that understates just how heavy on the action it is. Some of the weapons are fairly standard pistols, grenades, rocket launchers, etc., but others are considerably more goofy. I don't want to spoil anything, but yeah... You have some very silly weapons in your arsenal. So sure, there's an element of violence, but it's cartoon violence. There is no blood, and you're generally only shooting aliens, robots and vehicles.
All right, so yeah, obviously I love this game, but what makes it so great? I'll tell you.
First and foremost, it's the gameplay. It's fast-paced and action-packed, with superbly designed levels that each have a unique character. Insomniac Games has been at this for a long time, since the equally acclaimed Spyro the Dragon series on PS1. They have literally decades of experience with action platform games, and it shows. And there are tons of collectibles throughout every level, the vast majority of which serve to upgrade your abilities in one way or another.
Still filed under gameplay, I do need to talk about the weapons in just a bit more detail. There are dozens of them unlocked over the course of the game, each unique and with its own strengths and weaknesses. Often certain weapons are better suited to certain situations, and learning what to use where is a big part of the fun. But most importantly, they are all upgradable. They level up as you use them, so your favorite weapons will automatically become stronger. On top of that, each weapon has three or four additional stats--range, damage area, ammo capacity, etc.--which can be manually upgraded by using a material called raritanium, which you can sometimes find scattered around the levels and is sometimes dropped by enemies. And this is the key to the game's addictiveness. The progression. You're always getting stronger, always finding new weapons, and their functions are always expanding. New gadgets will lead to new skills which will grant you access to new areas. Insomniac really excels at this. They have it down to an art and a science. If you're not careful, you'll say, "Just one more level..." and then suddenly realize that it's 4:00AM and you have to work in three hours.
But what about the story? Again, it's pretty outstanding. Personally, I don't care too much about story in games. A good story is nice to have, but it isn't essential if the gameplay is solid. And sometimes an otherwise great game can be bogged down by too much story (looking at you, Metal Gear 4). But Ratchet & Clank's story is just too much fun to ever have that problem. It's full of colorful characters, all of whom fall on a personality spectrum from quirky to insanely weird. All are expertly voiced, and they deliver some of the funniest dialogue in gaming. It's really, really great stuff. Yes, some of the gags are awful, but they're knowingly awful in that way where you still can't help but laugh.
And the graphics. Holy cow, is this a pretty game. I didn't even really notice at first because I was too focused on the intense action to admire the scenery, but when I finally gave my 14-year-old a turn (it was the only way to make him stop asking) I just watched and let my jaw drop at the spectacle. Seems to me that this is the first big AAA title this generation (outside of Nintendo, of course) to use cartoon style graphics instead of shooting for a more realistic look. Maybe there are others, but nothing that comes to mind. And it's pretty impressive what the PS4 is able to do under those circumstances. When half your power isn't being used just to try to overcome the uncanny valley, you can pump out some stunning visuals. And the truth is, the cartoon look is going to age better. I'll play Spyro or Crash Bandicoot today and think they still look good, but GTA III looks far worse than we remember, and that even came out a generation later. You may be impressed with how Nathan Drake looks today, but will you still think so in 20 years? Maybe, but maybe not, Ratchet and Clank will still look great, though.
So there you go. A thoroughly long-winded review, but hey, there was a lot to cover. Anyway, you're the one who's still reading it. And I'm done writing it now. I have a game to play, after all.
If you played any of the previous games in the series, playing this will feel like coming home. The game is absolutely gorgeous - I have a 4K Sony Bravia, and everything just pops. I really cannot oversell the beautiful graphics. Areas are updated expanded upon in greater detail - particularly the skyboxes - but I still found myself running through the areas on what seemed like muscle-memory left over from my countless playthroughs years and years ago. The game has always sort of looked like an animated movie, but now it could easily rival a Pixar film (high hopes for the movie!), and the cinematics don't look any different from the gameplay.
The writing is top-notch as usual. You aren't getting some Frank Miller Daredevil seriousness and metaphor, but you are getting smart, quick-witted, and 'this is funny enough to actually make me laugh' with both the dialogue and the scripting. Speaking of which, Insomniac basically has taken the original game as a skeleton and fleshed it out entirely, remaking it from the ground up. You'll find yourself in familiar situations, but instead of a action-platformer with a story added to it, the story comes first and takes over as a narrative. That's not to say the original lacked a cohesive story, rather that this game is framed more cinematically and flows a bit better.
The controls and camera are what you expect from the series, and it still works just as well as it did before. 'If it's not broke,' and all that.
The light RPG elements in upgrading weapons takes inspiration from previous games in the series and expands upon them. Each weapon gets experience and levels up as you fight enemies with them, and collecting Raritanium (either hidden in the world or dropped by enemies) allows you to purchase upgrades from a hex grid for things like extra ammo, higher rate of fire, larger area of effect, etc.
There's also a card-collecting element, but it doesn't feel exhausting at all. Cards drop fairly regularly from enemies (and certain weapons have upgrades to increase the drop rates), with the exception of the nine cards needed to unlock the RYNO ultimate weapon. The aim is to complete three-card sets to unlock buffs and weapons (the weapons unlock in challenge mode, after the game is done - more on that later). For example, collecting the the cards in the Robots set increases the amount of bolts dropped by fallen enemies by a percentage. The most appreciated aspect of this collection meta-game is that any duplicates are counted simply as "duplicates" on a counter found on the collection screen, and collecting five duplicates allows you to trade them for a card you don't own. They've done everything possible to avoid frustration, and it's fantastic - anther neat bit is that each card is of an item, place, or character from this game or another in the series, and the back sides have general information about them (e.g., first appearance, description).
There's also New Game +/Challenge Mode options that allow for multiple playthroughs to make sure that Gold Bolts and RYNO cards aren't the only reasons to keep coming back. Gold Bolts unlock 'cheats' (but the real cheat-y ones don't unlock until you have nearly all of them) as well as fun stuff like filters, concept art, and head-swapped masks - par for the course with the rest of the series.
Basically, Insomniac has managed to take a classic game and make it an even better classic for this generation. I can't wait to get back home from work to play it.
