There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The single player campaign (heard they’re patching in co-op later) is included in Gamepass subscription if you have that, you don’t have to purchase this. Seeing that it’s Microsoft first party it’s most likely not going to be swapped out of rotation.
For online, it’s a free-to-play live service game like Fortnite. Has microtransactions and content is added overtime. Don’t need to buy this disc or pay for that content (unless you purchase microtransactions)
Review score based on fun factor of the campaign since multiplayer is free-to-play.
With intros out of the way, onto the review:
-Gameplay:
Very smooth fast action gameplay, best in the series
Good enemy variety and AI. Low level AI will run away and towards teammates when overwhelmed. Less bullet spongy than past titles
More mobility. Now can use a Grapple Shot, Makes the game feel different than past Halo games. Similar to hookshot in Zelda games for traversal. Also can use to grab weapons/barrels/items towards you, or pull yourself towards enemies/vehicles/turrets. There’s also a thruster ability, basically a dash move
They didn’t fix the vehicle controls which still feel very floaty and not natural to control. Best way to get around in the game (except for Banshee)/escape from enemies is to Sprint, Hook shot the ground, slide then jump
-Presentation:
Graphics are good for playing on X1. Doesn't look next gen/massive improvement from Halo 5, but like the art direction. Loading times are fast for not being a Xbox Series console.
There’s this new AI partner in the main campaign; her lips/jaw tips to one side during some cutscenes which looks a bit odd.
Music stellar as always. Love the random one-liners from enemies
--Single Player
Story/Plot: The main villain, Atriox beats you (Master Chief) like Thanos beat Hulk in Endgame. Instead of finishing you off, he throws you off the cliff into space. You get nursed back to health and go on a revenge quest to save the universe as the Banished Army took over since your absence. Campaign focus more on character interaction between your pilot and AI. Pilot reminds me of the main male lead pilot in Star Wars Rogue One but more over the top. There are subplots, but to understand them you must have played all previous main line entries
Not the best story of the franchise, but the gameplay is very fun. Best Halo gameplay experience since Halo 3
Game is semi open world. If you played Gears 5 when you reach the ice covered area it’s similar to that.
Battle area is much larger. A good strategy on higher difficult is to snipe before going in/enemy notice you
Compete set objective markers to open up a main one to progress main story.
It’s still linear overall, but you do have choice on how you progress. There are side quest you can participate in also, but there’s basically only two types: bounty and capture outposts.
Most of the time you’re just clearing a area and progressing to the next with more story. Sounds repetitive but the variety of enemies and setups makes it enjoyable
There’s a point system for finishing side quests where spend on weapons, vehicles unlocks
Collect Spartan core upgrades grapple hook, armor and perks. I recommend upgrading shields first before anything
No exp or level up system in campaign. For enemies on the way to your destination, you may have tendency to just run past and ignore
Armor crates to unlock cosmetic for multiplayer
Other than that there’s just Audio logs to collect for more backstory
No co-op at launch. Lasts around 10 hours (with ~2hrs of cutscenes), 15 hours if you want to collect everything
There is a secret post credit scene if you complete game on Legendary difficulty. It’s very similar to the regular post credit scene but with voice overs
Unless you plan to play through the campaign multiple times in the future, I’d say best to subscribe to Gamepass for a month (if not already subscribed). No co-op yet, if you’re looking to play with a friend or family member best to wait until they patch it in
--Multiplayer.
This is the review at launch
Core gameplay is solid. Great foundation, but how the multiplayer is implemented is horrible
Not complete at launch (still in beta?), very bare bones. As mentioned before, it’s a live service game. Aside from tutorial (Bot Bootcamp); Only 3 game modes at launch: Quick Play, Big Team Battle (12v12), and Ranked Arena
Back to the beta bit. It’s not in beta when you can pay for microtransactions…anyway…
10 maps at launch. Some are specific to Big Team Battle. Not much variety, some look very similar to each other
6 game modes: Slayer, Capture the Flag, Oddball, Strongholds, Stockpile, and Total Control.
No Team SWAT, Team Doubles, Team Snipers, Infection, King of the Hill, Juggernaut, Ricochet, Dominion, Breakout, etc
No matchmaking playlists or Forge for playing specific game modes which doesn’t make sense. Sometimes it forces you into a game mode that you don’t want to play
The exp, level up system is not good. Instead of focusing on wins, and performance; focus on a battle pass system where there are set mission challenges.
I understand that they try to make everything diverse and experiment on ways to play; but for those who have a set strategy or played for hours doing creative effective tactics will not feel like they’re progressing.
For example. when new daily challenge comes out where you have to melee in the air for exp, you see everyone doing it which looks ridiculous. Or a challenge where you must take down a chopper; you see someone camping outside looking up the air all the time not focusing on the match
Some challenges require you to do tasks multiple times, and you can tell when someone is trying to do a challenge and not playing the game to win the match
If you don’t like the challenges given to you; you can use battle swap pack. When you run out, they make you pay for it with real world money. You can also buy exp boost. Which makes the game pay-to-win. It’s not you’re not allowed to have fun unless you pay
Also you have to do challenges in a set time period or they disappear at the end of the season. So if you’re at 80% complete, your progress gets wiped
There are special events you can participate in to get special skins. If you miss out on those then not sure if they’ll reappear making again. If you’re busy during that time, you totally lucked out on it. Also it’s physically impossible to get all content for that event, unless you’re crazy rich and spend $1000+
There’s a store where you can pay real world money/micotransactions for skins and challenge swap/exp boosts. Some prices are ridiculous like $15 for a side hip accessory or helmet attachment.
The in-game money progression to amount of time spent is not even fair, having to spend dozens to hundreds of hours to get an item which you can pay 15 real world dollars for in real life
I expect withholding of modes till later to drip feed the community/encourage long term play for casual gamers, and microtransactions for monetary gain from EA, Activision and Ubisoft, but from a first party Xbox Games Studio. Shame.
--Conclusion:
Single player campaign and core gameplay is good. Multiplayer is bare bones at launch and needs a rework/added content. Don’t like how things are implemented for multiplayer. Feels like a money grab in terms of mechanics. Should have just made everything included on the disc instead of drip feeding us content and making us pay for it through microtransactions
