Combat is improved and less clunky than the original.
The graphics look excellent. The story is the same masterpiece that I fell in love with.
The first game is ok, but did find this a bit more of a slog compared to 2 and 3.
Really great to experience these games again with a modern game engine and graphics.
If you loved the originals I highly recommend experiencing them again!
To modern eyes of people who have heard of the series but never played it, the original Mass Effect game, even with the remaster may still seem clunky in places, retaining some of the issues that dogged the game on its release over 14 years ago (the Mako, though much improved is still a pain to drive, the maps feel empty and some of the terrain makes exploration feel like a chore at times, plus the auto save on some missions will throw you back to the start of a level rather than a mid mission milestone)
However, the true heart of the game and its sequels is the writing. The world building and the epic storyline that carries your decisions across a massive narrative is second to none. The diverse range of characters, you will grow to love (and hate), scenes will be embedded in your mind long after the series has finished and if you can take your time and talk with everyone, explore everywhere and not just "run and gun" for the finish line. You will be rewarded with one of the most satisfying stories in gaming.
Mass Effect as a trilogy is a classic and this remaster (although not perfect) is a great time to experience one of the best RPGs in modern gaming.
Mass Effect - Legendary Edition culminates with the return of the original free games, the beloved characters and expanse that came years ago. The game comes bundled with most of the dlc (no dlc codes) though some pieces have not returned due to technical reasons involving the original dlc coding. The game is fat with content with an undeniable sheen which for the most part is very well done.
Mass Effect 1 has perhaps seen the most of the overhaul with ME 2 and 3 even by today’s standards looking rather nice and playing as solid games. As I mentioned before the upgrades on the game visually look mostly great but at the same time the change in lighting whilst realistic can take away from the original releases art style.
The game suffers from the same potato faced human npcs which can look strange alongside very well modelled character faces but that’s a pretty small gripe which doesn’t really remove too much immersion. The atmosphere and sound are still very much where they should be and I’ve not noticed too many bugs whilst playing.
On the whole though it’s a return of the BioWare we knew and loved pre-Inquistion with the hope they’ll channel some of this love into future games and recognise that these are the kinds characters we want who are brilliantly written and voiced. If you’ve never played ME before this is a treat and as a returning player to the trilogy I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia and living it all over again.
Storyline and quests are unchanged, and although the character looks are improved and the resolution is boosted, the underlying character movement and gameplay feel the same as the originals. I kept expecting better model articulation, but it was a trick played on my mind by the new lighting and textures.
Be prepared for a long installation process. Having gotten used to what can be achieved with next generation compression on the PS5, I found the wait as nearly 90Gb from two disks and 15Gb of update patches installed to be a bit tedious. It may be a trilogy of games, but all three need to be installed first before you can even get to the character creation screen. My solution was to watch a movie while this took place.
Multiplayer is missing from the Legendary Edition, but as the trilogy are RPGs at heart you are getting the full story from beginning to ending.
