5.0 out of 5 stars That’s how to do a remake!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 21, 2023
Mass Effect 2 + 3 are amount the greatest games ever made. This remake does a fantastic job of reviving them.
Combat is improved and less clunky than the original.
The graphics look excellent. The story is the same masterpiece that I fell in love with.
The first game is ok, but did find this a bit more of a slog compared to 2 and 3.
Really great to experience these games again with a modern game engine and graphics.
If you loved the originals I highly recommend experiencing them again!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great remaster of a fantastic trilogy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 24, 2021
Sci fi space opera in gaming doesn't get more epic than this fantastic set of games. Its been great to play the trilogy again with all the dlc content and upgraded graphics and tweaks on my PS4 since playing back in the heady days of the Xbox360.

To modern eyes of people who have heard of the series but never played it, the original Mass Effect game, even with the remaster may still seem clunky in places, retaining some of the issues that dogged the game on its release over 14 years ago (the Mako, though much improved is still a pain to drive, the maps feel empty and some of the terrain makes exploration feel like a chore at times, plus the auto save on some missions will throw you back to the start of a level rather than a mid mission milestone)

However, the true heart of the game and its sequels is the writing. The world building and the epic storyline that carries your decisions across a massive narrative is second to none. The diverse range of characters, you will grow to love (and hate), scenes will be embedded in your mind long after the series has finished and if you can take your time and talk with everyone, explore everywhere and not just "run and gun" for the finish line. You will be rewarded with one of the most satisfying stories in gaming.

Mass Effect as a trilogy is a classic and this remaster (although not perfect) is a great time to experience one of the best RPGs in modern gaming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of a Classic Adventure
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2021
Given the turbulent troubles BioWare have had in recent years with what I felt were mediocre games and management it’s fair to say I was sceptical about a remaster of the Mass Effect Trilogy. It has been a much needed release to try and claw back the fans who might have fallen out with EA era BioWare and I’m happy to say that it’s delivered.

Mass Effect - Legendary Edition culminates with the return of the original free games, the beloved characters and expanse that came years ago. The game comes bundled with most of the dlc (no dlc codes) though some pieces have not returned due to technical reasons involving the original dlc coding. The game is fat with content with an undeniable sheen which for the most part is very well done.

Mass Effect 1 has perhaps seen the most of the overhaul with ME 2 and 3 even by today’s standards looking rather nice and playing as solid games. As I mentioned before the upgrades on the game visually look mostly great but at the same time the change in lighting whilst realistic can take away from the original releases art style.

The game suffers from the same potato faced human npcs which can look strange alongside very well modelled character faces but that’s a pretty small gripe which doesn’t really remove too much immersion. The atmosphere and sound are still very much where they should be and I’ve not noticed too many bugs whilst playing.

On the whole though it’s a return of the BioWare we knew and loved pre-Inquistion with the hope they’ll channel some of this love into future games and recognise that these are the kinds characters we want who are brilliantly written and voiced. If you’ve never played ME before this is a treat and as a returning player to the trilogy I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia and living it all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a masterpiece of a remaster!

This is a masterpiece of a remaster! The first Mass Effect feels like a whole new game! The graphics are fantastic, the sound quality has improved so much and each time you land on a planet, you don’t realise how beautiful the first game actually is. All 3 games are beautifully remastered and the gameplay has improved a lot, especially when it comes to the sniper rifle in the first game. Everything is a lot more smooth, there’s no lag, there are some fine details in all three games that will get you to take notice that you didn’t notice before. Also in the first game, whenever you get a different assault rifle, each weapon has a different sound and a different burst. One rifle has you pressing the R2 button and other rifles will get you to hold down the R2 button and you can feel the difference. What a remaster and I am so happy with how all of the games has turned out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic games with a facelift
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 6, 2021
Lets face it, some classic games are in need of a facelift. While this isn't a remake, or even a full remaster, it makes the game better to look at and fixes a few key areas that let the trilogy down. Don't expect much improvement in the role-playing aspects or the plot, but at least driving around on planets takes a boost and is improved along the lines of Mass Effect: Andromeda's implementation.

Storyline and quests are unchanged, and although the character looks are improved and the resolution is boosted, the underlying character movement and gameplay feel the same as the originals. I kept expecting better model articulation, but it was a trick played on my mind by the new lighting and textures.

Be prepared for a long installation process. Having gotten used to what can be achieved with next generation compression on the PS5, I found the wait as nearly 90Gb from two disks and 15Gb of update patches installed to be a bit tedious. It may be a trilogy of games, but all three need to be installed first before you can even get to the character creation screen. My solution was to watch a movie while this took place.

Multiplayer is missing from the Legendary Edition, but as the trilogy are RPGs at heart you are getting the full story from beginning to ending.
