    Electrical wall pass through project
Single Product Review: APC Wall Outlet Multi Plug ExtenderDiscussion: I chose the APC plug extender, because the inside wall outlets are behind a table, so plugging in the extension cords, and allowing them to stay tight to the wall resulted in a cleaner look.Project Summary: I have a temporary solar/PV battery backup project in the garage, and I wanted to use the generated solar power inside the house. Previously has an extension cord running through the door to the garage, but that's not safe for a lot of reasons, so I wired up a couple of electrical boxes, and wired in a cut-out switch. The inside connections are a standard wall outlet, and the outside connection to the inverter is via a twist lock plug, for extra security.Project Recommendations:1) I looked at a lot of generator inlet receptacles, but most were 20-30 amp, and I don't need that large (standard 15A), so I used a NEMA locking L5-15P instead.2) As this was going to be a twist lock plug, I wanted to attach the electrical box to a stud if at all possible (vs. using the electrical box which clamps onto dry-wall). The Madison Electric Products boxes were perfect. I used a single gang on the inside box, and for the outside, I used a 2-gang so that I could also fit a cut-off switch. I mounted the 2-gang box rotated 90 degrees to the normal orientation for two reasons: a) I could screw it directly into the horitzontal stud, and b) I could mount the plug on the bottom, and the switch on the top.3) When it comes to electrical parts, I generally go with Leviton, which I have had great success with. The only item I got that was a different brand was the right angle plug (which Leviton also offers, I just didn't see it when placing the order, otherwise I would have ordered that one instead). Conclusion: All the products listed in the review, and used for this project I am rating 5-stars.Related Products:ELECTRICAL WIRING (INSIDE)Madison Electric Products MSB1G One Gang Device Box ~ $2https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H8NUVQKLeviton 8300-R 20-Amp, 125-Volt, Extra Heavy Duty Hospital Grade ~ $9https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002090BBCLeviton 80703-ORG 1-Gang Duplex Device ~ $2https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U39XFUAPC Wall Outlet Multi Plug Extender, P6W, (6) AC Multi Plug Outlet ~ $11https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046BGUWGELECTRICAL WIRING (OUTSIDE)Madison Electric Products MSB2G Two Gang ~ $4https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H8NUVROLeviton 4710 15 Amp, 125 Volt, L5-15R, 2P, 3W, Single Locking Receptacle ~ $13https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LNKO1GLeviton 1221-2W 20-Amp, 120/277-Volt, Toggle Single-Pole AC Quiet Switch ~ $6https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MPPTACLeviton 84007 2-Gang 1-Toggle 1-Single 1.406-Inch Diameter ~ $8https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U3G2AEELECTRICAL WIRING (CABLES/CORDS/PLUGS)Right angled Nema L5-15P 15 Amp 125V 2 Pole 3 Wire ~ $16https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087FFK2LKLeviton 515CV Commercial Grade Straight Blade (FEMALE) ~ $6https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H5WHMWLeviton 5256-VY 15 Amp, 125 Volt, Industrial Grade (MALE) ~ $9https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009W3A8

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s not about the Joules
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019
With a name like Essential, it’s not promising much. However, it’s decent for a direct plug-in protector.

I have four of these, protecting lower-cost electronics. The direct plug-in design with side outlets is useful for many applications, helps keep the floor uncluttered, and does not require a large offset when used behind furniture. This also has a SurgeArrest feature, which shuts off the device if it is compromised.

The ratings stamped on the back of my device are:
    Voltage Protection Rating: L-N: 400V, L-G: 400V, N-G: 400V. In=3KA.

The Voltage Protection Rating of 400V is okay, but the In value of 3kA suggests the durability of this device is on the low end. That's not surprising considering the low cost.
    ______________

For Surge Protection Devices (SPDs), the ANSI/UL 1449 3rd Edition standard requires the Voltage Protection Rating (VPR), Nominal Discharge Current (In), and some other ratings be marked on the device. APC, Tripp Lite, and others rarely disclose these values in their literature. Instead, the marketing is all about the Joules rating, which is not part of the UL standard. The standard VPR ratings include 330, 400, 500, …; while the standard In values include 3kA, 5kA, 10kA, … . A lower VPR value is better, while a higher In value is better.

On the FAQs page of the NEMA Surge Protection Institute (nemasurge.org) site, there is a summary on comparing SPDs:
"Because Joule ratings can easily be manipulated many of the industry standards (UL) and guidelines (IEEE) do not recommend the comparison of joules. Instead they put the focus on actual performance of the SPDs with test such as the Nominal Discharge Current testing, which tests the SPDs durability along with the VPR testing that reflects the let-through voltage."

Product: APC 6-Outlet Wall Surge Protector 1080 Joules, SurgeArrest Essential (P6W)
Brief Description: Wall Surge protector made by APC by Schneider Electric with six 110V sockets with ground power.

    Reason for purchasing:
To protect valuable items, such as laptop, monitor, and phone from damage caused by a power surge, which is a sudden boost in electrical potential energy, as well as increase the number of available sockets from 2 to 6 without having to have cables dangling near the wall.

    Pros:
    - Robust structure. Plastic but very well made.
    - Easy to install
    - Has two indicators (Green light to indicate the functional protection and red light to indicate the potential problem in the house electrical circuit layout)
    - Lifetime standard warranty, which includes $50,000 damage coverage as well as a free replacement
    - Screw in the middle will hold the power surge secured on top of the existing wall socket platform, which prevents the unit from falling when multiple adapters are plugged in
    - Very affordable

    Cons:
    - Would be nice to have more colour options, such as black
    - Would be nice to have the APC logo written somewhere else other than the front. It is too red and large, making it too noticeable
