First, I'm really surprised by some of the negative reviews. It seems most of the negative comments stem from purchasing the apps for your mobile devices, the fact there is no HDMI port, and the fact it changes the actual TV channels if anyone else is watching TV. I'll cover each of these concerns in a minute. From a pure product delivery standpoint, the M1 by Slingbox is without a doubt an outstanding product.
Packaging: Item arrived in 2-days as promised by Amazon. Original manufacturer Slingbox packaging was well protected in the Amazon shipping box. When you open the box, the M1 is the first thing you see. Lift up the M1, and below you get some printed material which includes a quick set up guide, 1 set of component video cables, 1 set of RCA audio cables, 1 power adapter, and an IR blaster cable. Nothing extremely fancy, but everything you need to get up and running.
Setup: My one complaint for setup (which is insignificant) is I was not aware the M1 required the cable/satellite box to be configured for an IR remote. Mine was...but I didn't know this until half way through the setup process. Why was this an inconvenience for me? Well, I didn't have an extra set up component video cables to pass through to the TV (They were scheduled to arrive the next day...yes ordered some through Amazon!). Therefore, I was setting up the M1 without the TV actually turned on. So, I had to reconnect the TV directly to the satellite box and go through my satellite setup up pages to ensure it was setup to receive IR signals...it was! Back to setup. The M1 is configured with a computer or mobile device. I used my MBP, so I cannot speak to setup using anything else. You simply connect the component video cables from the back of your satellite/cable box to the INPUT side of the M1. Then you connect the RCA audio cables from the satellite/cable box to the INPUT side of the M1. Plug in the IR blaster (if desired) and then plug it into a power source. The M1's LED will begin to flash indicating it is powered up. At this point, you simply log onto the slingbox setup page and it walks you through the whole process. The website detects your M1 and allows you to enter in your WiFi password so the M1 can join your network (this is how I'm configured), or it will ask if it is connected via ethernet cable. The entire process of setting up the M1 takes about 5 minutes! That's it...done! Props to sling box for creating such a simple and intuitive setup process.
How it performs!: You must realize the sling box is taking your actual satellite signal and "slinging" it to wherever you are on the planet. Unlike an iTunes movie or a show on Netflix, there is no way for the sling box to "pre-download" the content it's receiving and download it faster than you can consume it. This is all happening real-time. Therefore, it is impossible to expect ZERO buffering all the time. Again, think about what is happening here...slingbox grabs your content (realtime) and uploads it via your network...sends it to sling box's servers...and downloads it to your device of choice. Because of this, one would think constant buffering and stuttering would be prevalent. However, it is simply amazing that the picture is at almost HD quality with ALMOST zero buffering! I do get the occasional buffering spinning wheel (I'd say once every 10 minutes or so). What's great however, is once the content begins playing again (within 5 seconds) it picks up right where it left off. So if the buffering started as Lebron James was taking a fad away jump shot...you wouldn't miss the basketball going through the net.
The most amazing thing about sling box: Sling has developed and actually licensed it's technology to DISH and others. The muscle behind Slingbox is the ability to determine your connection speeds and change the compression algorithms in realtime in order to provide you with the best possible viewing experience at that time (based on your connection speeds...up and down). This is what makes sling truly amazing. Whether you are on 4G, LTE, or WiFi...sling will know what compression it needs to use in order to provide you with the best picture quality.
My setup & experience: I connected the M1 to my home network using WiFi only. My ISP connection speeds are 5MB up & 30MB down. I get an HD quality viewing experience anywhere in the world as long as my download speed where I'm at is 2MB or better. Between 1MB and 2MB, I get some pixelation and buffering about every 3 to 5 minutes. I'm not going to ding sling for this because this is a connection limitation that no company could overcome. Again, it's trying to send a "realtime" signal to my device with a poor download speed. On LTE and/or 4G using my iPhone or MBP the picture quality is absolutely incredible.
About negative comments: As mentioned above, a lot of reviewers complain about being required to purchase the mobile apps and the fact HDMI is not supported. Let me address those now.
First, I understand paying $15 per mobile app is not cool after you just dropped money on the sling box. Because I knew this going into the purchase, I'm not going to fault sling for this. I paid $140 for the M1 here at Amazon. I also paid the $15 for the iPhone app. As such, I knew before I bought the M1 that I was "actually" paying $165 for a sling box to use on my MBP and iPhone. $165 is still way cheaper than some other Slingbox models...so do I really need to complain...perhaps...but I won't. There are no monthly fees...so I'm content at $165 for what I'm getting....YMMV.
Second, the issue concerning HDMI. I won't get into the technical aspects of how it works, but content providers (HBO, Cinemax, etc.) can restrict their content if using an HDMI cable. In other words, these providers can use the HDMI technology to prevent any "man in the middle" hardware from working. Therefore, if you use HDMI from the satellite/cable box to a sling box and then connect your TV to the sling box, you will not be able to view these programs. If you're not familiar with this, I recommend you Google "HDMI content restriction." Because of this, Sling has made the decision to use Component video only. Component video still passes HD quality video without the restrictions associated with HDMI. Therefore, the consumer can actually watch any content they want to.
So, if you are in the market for a sling box , you need to know it uses component video only. If your satellite/cable box doesn't have component video out then DO NOT buy the M1.
Third, sling box controls your satellite/cable box remotely. I've read some reviews complaining about how it sucked one person cannot watch a different channel while slinging a separate channel. This is just silly. Again, think about what the sling box is doing. It is physically impossible for the sling box to harness the video output of the satellite/cable box and send a different channel to your device and/or the TV. Therefore, if you're watching TV remotely using Slingbox and decide to change the channel anyone watching that TV will see the change as well. So, if this is an inconvenience for you, you'll need to setup the M1 to a separate satellite/cable box.
Final thoughts: The picture quality is amazing considering what's going on behind the scene. Without a doubt, you can enjoy almost HD quality TV from anywhere on the planet as long as you have a decent internet connection. I travel a lot, so this affords me an opportunity to stay up to date with my favorite sports teams and television content. Because sling is actually remotely controlling your satellite/cable box, I can use it to set recordings and watch those recordings whenever I choose. I highly recommend the M1 to anyone in the market for a sling box as long as you understand what it does and it's limitations.
I decided to buy the M1 months ago to see if the picture quality, performance, and the desktop client had improved. The improvement over prior versions was amazing -- so I immediately purchased two more to replace all of my all Slingbox devices.
Then the ads came. I started to change my behavior somewhat to avoid the desktop client -- I would try to stream things through other means like NHL Gamecenter, NBC Sports Live, etc. The biggest issue I have with the desktop client is the video ad at the beginning. The ad is always distracting, and it immediately interrupts what I am trying to do -- get in to see if there is something to watch, or turn a game on quickly. But what is even worse, the client crashes on occasion, and when it does you need to watch the video ad again just to get back and watch. Since the update that included the ads, the desktop player also crashes my PC from time to time.
The static ads that are in the player are annoying, but somewhat less problematic than the video ads for me. You can go full screen to avoid them. However with the older player you could have a Slingplayer window with no clutter around it. When the video is not maximized on the current player, the ads take up a ton of space on the screen.
If I had known about the ads up front, I would have given Vulkano a try instead. Personally I would prefer a small fee over the ads -- but only if I could get the same quality video with experience of the older desktop player. I will continue to shift towards alternatives unless there is a change to this approach and the user experience, and certainly will not consider buying Sling products in the future.
Sling is within their rights to include the ads, and if they feel they need the ads to stay viable then that is their choice. My choice then is to reflect the poor experience in this review.

The 3 seconds of advertising at the startup each time is not bothersome. This is a great substitute for having to purchase satellite equipment and pay for service, since I am paying for the cable at home anyway.
