Product Overview
METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE takes the renowned METAL GEAR franchise into exciting new territory by focusing on delivering an all-new action experience unlike anything that has come before. Combining world-class development teams at Kojima Productions and PlatinumGames, METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE brings two of the world's most respected teams together with a common goal of providing players with a fresh synergetic experience that combines the best elements of pure action and epic storytelling, all within the expansive MG universe. The game introduces Raiden as the central character; a child soldier transformed into a half-man, half-machine cyborg ninja, equipped with a high-frequency katana blade and a soul fueled by revenge.
In the near future, cyborg technology has become commonplace throughout society. Three years have passed since the collapse of the Patriots system that had been secretly controlling the global power balance from the shadows. However, peace remains elusive. The dissemination of cybernetic technology has triggered instability and conflict as those who control the trade gain increasing power. Furthermore, large 'Private Military Companies', or PMC's, that had been supported and controlled by the Patriots have collapsed, spawning countless rogue entities with origins to larger criminal organizations. These renegade PMCs employing cyborg technology have become increasingly more disruptive shifting policy and power at will. As a member of the peace-keeping PMC 'Maverick Security', Raiden lives by the mantra of protecting and saving lives. But as the world plunges further into asymmetric warfare, the only path that leads him forward is rooted in resolving his past, and carving through anything that stands in his way.
Features
- The latest METAL GEAR console experience featuring an all-new style of frenetic action gameplay and central character, Raiden, a cyborg ninja who uses his High Frequency katana blade to cut through any thing that stands in his vengeful path!
- New game design, the birth of a new type of MG experience: Combining development powerhouses Kojima Productions and PlatinumGames together, METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE will offer a fast & fluid game style centered on katana-based combat within the METAL GEAR universe.
- Advanced technology: Produced by a hybrid team of renowned developers, the in-game technology promises to push the boundaries of graphics, style and lightning-speed action gameplay.
- 'ZanDatsu' cut mechanic: Within the game world, players will be able to take advantage of what has been created- "an all-encompassing cutting plane in real time". Cut anything, anytime, anywhere.
- Epic story in the vein of what MG is known and loved for: The game takes place after the events of METAL GEAR SOLID 4 where the world has fallen into chaos with cyborg crimes & terrorism running rampant in society. Delves into the continuing story of Raiden, a child-soldier turned cyborg ninja who's origins are connected to both METAL GEAR SOLID 2 and METAL GEAR SOLID 4.

#interview { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } #interview li { margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px; list-style-type: none; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } Get inside the mind of legendary Game Designer, Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Series. Exclusive Q&A from PAX 2012 as he reflects on the 25th anniversary of the series.
- If you could do an HD remake of any one of your titles, which one would it be, and why?
- It would be METAL GEAR SOLID. If it was to be arranged in a contemporary way using the latest technology, I think it could result in something quite impressive. However, I don't want to be the one to recreate it.
- Aside from releasing HD remakes of Metal Gear, what else do you have up your sleeve to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Metal Gear Solid?
- We have trophy support for MGS4, a music CD, an anniversary book, a novel, figurines and toys, apparel items, and a variety of products related to METAL GEAR.
- If Snake didn't become as popular of a character in the Metal Gear Solid series, do you think you have gone another route, story-wise? Perhaps, using "The Boss", or even making the game where it had multiple character scenarios, perhaps, playing through the story of the Cobra Unit during World War II?
- That may have well been a possibility. Instead of a saga centered on Snake, I may have written a story focused on the "FOXHOUND" members, similar as what was done in "X-Men."
- You took a game, Metal Gear Solid, that wasn't originally supposed to even be an entire series, and you turned it into one of the most memorable stories ever seen in gaming. When WAS the "Solid" storyline originally supposed to end, and what would have been done differently?
- I originally intended to end it with "METAL GEAR SOLID." That is the very reason why I introduced his ultimate enemy, "Liquid Snake (clone)," who possessed the same abilities as "Solid Snake." Had that not been the case, I wouldn't have utilized the stereotypical and difficult-to-manipulate character setting of a clone for a main character.
- How did you conceive such a magnificent storyline for this series of games? Where did you gather your inspiration from?
- I believe that this is derived from the game design, story, and setting being handled by the same person. In comparison to movies or novels, there may be some elements that may fall short, however, I strove to build a world and story that worked well with the game.
- To Mr. Kojima, have you ever based any of the Metal Gear characters off of yourself and do you see yourself in any of the characters?
- Not conciously, but "Snake" and I have come a long way together and so to some extent, a little bit of me is reflected in him. Like aging, for example.
- Is there any chance of making a side story with Gray Fox playable ? He is the most memorable and dominant ninja ever to be seen on mgs series,Mgs community can't deny that.
- Gray Fox's younger years is a theme that I'd like to work on someday.
- Have you ever thought of doing something related to Snatcher or Policenauts? Which Metal Gear game are you the most sastified with, and which are you the least sastified with?
- I poured my all into the development of each title at the time and so I am satisfied. However, I can also say that at the same time, there is a part of me that will never be satisfied and that is the reason why I still make games to this day.
- Which Metal Gear game are you the most sastified with and why? Could you share one of your favorite Metal Gear moments?
- I would say "METAL GEAR SOLID." This was developed before the game made a name for itself and so I was able to freely create the game as I desired without pressure and being concerned about whether it would sell or not.
- We all got to Ocelot grow as a character throughout the MGS series, he definitely made the series. What character in the MGS franchise do you think potentially got overlooked?
- That would be Colonel Campbell. It's easy to misinterpret him as a stereotypical military man, however he is actually a much more complex character. However, if I were to further flesh out Campbell, it would have been difficult to maintain the balance with the other characters and so I chose not to delve into that.
- Whats your advice for someone who is trying to be a videogame designer for first steps ?
- Future designers will be working with powerful hardware that possess varied means of expression. That is why more than anything else, direction and presentation skills for video, graphics, music, storytelling, etcetera, will be crucial. If one does not possess talent in that aspect, I believe it will be an uphill battle.
- If you could design a Metal Gear title with a female-lead protagonist, what would she be like and what would separate her from other heroes/characters in other action titles with other titles that have a female lead?
- A combat game featuring a frail female-lead would be difficult to deal with. However, a stong woman, such as The Boss, who exemplifies the unique maternal strengths that only a woman can possess, would make an interesting lead in a game.
- How much time has taken to make the current Fox Engine and is it closed to being completed?
- It's come together and has made a certain degree of progress. Right now, we aren’t making tech demos but are making a game that can actually be played as we polish up the engine’s processing, displays, as well as the usability of the tools. I think we may have finally caught up to the rest of the world. From now, we plan on moving upwards to new heights.
- Which is your favorite character from the Metal Gear saga, and why?
- The number one spot would probably go to Snake, who has both matured and aged together with me. He started out as a 2D character that could not speak and then evolved into a fleshed out, 3D polygon character capable of speech and expressions, and he even developed wrinkles. Overall, he has beccome a more three-dimensional character in all respects.

First off, most gamers will probably know what the Metal Gear series is all about before going into this game. If you count yourself among these people, then try to forget what you know about Metal Gear. This game stands alongside other games in the franchise, but it is worlds apart in gameplay and tone. Metal Gear Solid games are primarily about stealth and story. Revengeance is about action, plain and simple.
As for the actual gameplay, the best way I can describe it is very similar to Ninja Gaiden or God of war. Basically, you are Raiden, a cyborg ninja (which I can assure you, is as badass as it sounds). You have 2 primary attack buttons, a jump button, and a blade mode button (more on that in a moment). That's basically it. And notice I didn't say there was a block button. Blocking is handled via a parry mechanic that asks you to press your light attack command, plus your thumbstick toward the attacker with the correct timing to avoid damage. This system does work, and it keeps you as a player actively engaging enemies rather than holding in a block button for half the game. It works as intended, but it does take a bit of getting used to.
As mention above, there is also a button for "blade mode", unquestionably Metal Gear Rising's killer feature. Blade mode slows down time and allows complete control of Raiden's sword. While fixed in place, your left stick controls your camera and your right stick controls the plane of Raiden's sword. So, for example, hold the right stick to the right and release, and Raiden makes a sweeping horizontal cut from right to left. What truly makes this mode awesome is that anything you cut in this mode will be severed at the location of the cut. If you are fast enough, you can quite literally make minced meat out of your enemies. It's awesome. Overall, gameplay-wise, the game is fun and never frustrating.
The story is rather ho-hum. Basically, it's you versus some bad guys. Very forgetable stuff. But what the characters lack in depth, they make up for with fantastic boss battles. Each is unique, and I don't want to spoil anything here, but suffice to say, they will all put you to the test and force you to creatively use your blade mode.
It's a good thing the battles are so fun, because arguably the only real fault that I can find with the game is the length of the story. It's short. Really short. Like, 5 hours short. Normally this would be a big deal, but there are saving graces. As mentioned above, the boss battles are a blast, and you will replay them several times because of that. Also, there are a ton of collectables scattered about the games levels that unlock new skins and a few new weapons. Also, there are VR missions included in the game that are both addictive and fun, thus upping your overall play time with the game.
The last thing I want to mention is audio/visual. From a graphical standpoint, Metal Gear Rising looks great. The only sniggle I have is that the framerate can chug, but the only time I noticed this is when I cut an object into hundreds of pieces (literally, hundreds). And the soundtrack in this game? Amazing. Well, the soundtrack usage is what is actually the star. The songs here are mostly industrial metal, but they are dynamic. As an example, during an early boss fight, you get some crunchy guitar riffs during the fight, but as soon as you trigger the final quick time event of the battle, the lyrics kick in and are timed perfectly with the action. This makes the fights very cinematic, and go a long way toward making the player feel like the ninja-badass that you are. Honestly, I have replayed this first boss fight about 20 times, and alot of that has to do with just how well this is done.
To wrap up, Metal Gear Rising is well worth your money. It looks and sounds awesome, it's replayable, and it's damn good fun. It may be a short ride through the story, but it's one you will repeat over and over. Have fun, and cut what you will!
Many, if not all 1 star reviews are actually fake and done by either trolls or idiots who claim to be Metal Gear fans yet never follow the game itself. For example people think that a new Metal Gear known as rising will mean stealth like the old games where "Solid" is also in the title with tactical espionage. However if they followed the development they would know that it is now high speed action (stealth optional) based game. So they shouldnt be mouthing off stating that this is not Metal Gear when it really is, its just not about snake. While i label MGS as my all-time favorite game i do not mind change, in fact it makes the game interesting. I would love to say more but lets continue:
In this game you play as raiden who makes his first appearance in the MGS2 game. To avoid spoiling the information i will simply say that the game is action packed and platinum games really worked hard to avoid making this game a button mashing only game as much as possible. They rightfully did so, in fact they did it so well that if given the right difficulty it may be even harder then ninja Gaiden 2. You have to carefully time your attacks and always be ready to block incoming attacks. And just like certain other games, you cannot block all attacks. The parry system that is used for blocking in general is near perfection, its only flaw is that its usefulness is somewhat dependent on the camera angle which can suddenly change if a point of interest target (or boss) moves. so be prepared for that while playing
The game runs smooth, rarely ANY frame rate drop unless loading a particular section, it happens rarely as reloading can remove the issue as if it never happened (for example you die and it plays smooth the second time). When it does its only for a second. Additionally the graphics for the XBOX 360 version are very good, the only time when it becomes a little less thant awesome is when the cutscenes are in motion, in which they are compressed for disk space. When IN GAME the game is flawless and the cut anyway and nearly everything mechanic is a definite plus.
The controls are easy to learn but require a small learning curve to efficiently master. You may feel as though you can just block and attack and do it over and over. but that really will only get you through about half of the enemies that you will face. You may be even required to be stealthy and hidden to even take out certain enemies effectively. The achievements are a definite plus as it gives an additional purpose surrounding accomplishments. Also there are VR missions that can be unlocked by playing the story, and there is a possibility of more in game content through DLC, as i got an exclusive skin for preordering the game.
The bosses along with the real time cut scenes are very well done, it makes you feel as though you are a part of the game and it keeps the suspense going almost indefinitely, the replay value as a result should be very high and it keeps me wanting to even replay these levels at insane difficulty. As you play the game you can get upgrades through the shop and even customize raiden's body for additional abilities and learn new moves and have more augmentations.
*PLEASE NOTE: UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE, NOT SOLID*
As a long time metal gear fan since the ps1 version, i have enjoyed the heavy changes they made to make the game a fresh new addition to my collection. The game is fun, however many people feel that Metal gear centers around snake alone, thus without snake they believe it isnt worth playing. Those are not True fans, in fact we probably have all seen it in other games like old final fantasy's vs the new ones (i loved FF 13 AND 13-2 by the way). Its the concept of change that people dont seem to like, and i am just asking to let go of the stealth and action based style and try the High action and optional stealth style. They are pretty close haha.
The Flaws:
Not a lot but there is an issue with using the parry system when the camera is moving when the bosses are moving, this can cause attempted parrys to miss and result in taking damage, or even the player may not parry at all because it is not the direction of the attack. I will update more as i find it.
The story:
... Incredible, the elements that were used to make the other MGS's is infact used in this game. E,G, the reccurence of bosses that are based on the precedent bosses of the previous game. Such as Sniper Wolf and then Crying Wolf (mgs4) and then you have the IF prototype WOLF(MGR-R). There is an additional boss that follows the same concept and it is done very well.
If you are into a taste of the game *SPOILER WARNING* feel free to check out my gameplay through that is currently in progress. I hope you all enjoy the game as i am.

The Good:
Bloody good show chaps- The action, alone, steals the show in this game, it doesn't let up, even when the cut scenes hit, you need to be ready to spring into action. Nonstop fun.
Blade mode- At first feeling like you are an unstoppable beast, later turns into the only way to defeat enemies efficiently. Blade mode basically switches the game into slo-mo and then you use the right stick to slice your enemy any way you like, if you think it sounds cool, just wait till you start slicing watermelons and trees.
Story- If you aren't familiar with the MGS plot, don't worry, you can skip the story entirely and have a great time, but if you are a fan, pay attention. Just like MGS, the story is insane, you gotta keep up with it to understand whats going on. If you blink, you miss everything.
The MEH-
DmC clone?- No, just wanted to make that clear. But it takes some of what makes DmC great and puts them in nicely, but its not Metal Gear that we know and love, which might turn some fans off.
The BAD-
A little short- Took me the whole night to beat the Campaign, while wanting to play it again and again, i wanted a broader game like MGS.
So overall, its an incredibly fun but short experience that doesn't necessarily cater only to Metal Gear fans, everyone should have fun with Raiden and Blade Mode.
