Great, but...

Great, but...
In general these are great. The anchors work well and it's nice to be able to take portions of my workout outdoors. However, two things of note:1. The "anywhere" anchor is actually pretty small. It will go around a stair rail post at best. Way too short for wrapping around, say, a deck support post or a tree. I mostly end up using the door anchors.2. I mostly use the heavier bands, but sometimes add a smaller one on to give more incremental resistance. After only about 3-4 uses, the 3lb band has already begun to fray as well as gets hung up and won't stretch all the way out. It's not a tremendous loss, since it's the lightest band anyway, but it's still a bummer. Couldn't find a way to contact the seller, so I'm writing this review instead. I like them enough to not want a refund or exchange, but it would be nice if I could just get a replacement for the 3lb band.

I know this is long and I am sorry, but I was new to these when I bought them. I went on a lot of forums to find the right brand. I could find a lot of YouTube videos about how to determine the weight of your bands, but they were awful and didn't tell you anything about how to use them to actually achieve those weights or how to increase or decrease the weight without changing bands.

*Skip to the bottom if you want to know how resistance bands work, ie stretch vs. actual weight.

I bought this set mainly for physical therapy on my knee. I have extensive nerve damage and aerobic exercise is out of the question. So I have had these for a month now. I really do like this set. There is a lot of variety in weights. I live in an RV and free weights are not an option. I also feel safer using these. I have worked out a decent amount with free weights and I feel I can keep my balance better when working out my arms at chest height and higher.

Now the goodies it comes with.

The door anchor works great. So far the biggest band I have put on it is the 8# one (so 16#'s working weight). Remember it's an RV. I keep an eye on the door and frame. There is not the slightest damage and it doesn't budge when working out.

I also like the "anywhere" anchor. It really makes anchoring these possible to just about anything.

I find the ankle straps are comfortable.

The handles are just the right size. When working out with two bands, I keep a handle on each band during some exercises. I can easily grip both handles to work out. If I can't finish my number of reps, I just let go of the lighter strap and finish with the heavier one. It keeps me from having to stop working out, change grips around, then continue. I am thinking about purchasing one more 3# band. I keep the door anchor with its band on the door all of the time. I also keep the handles attached to their straps all of the time. An extra 3# band would give me the ability to increase the weight on either one without having to share a band.

The band barrier is essential to protect the bands. Just like when I used to rock climb, abrasion is not your friend. I think it is fairly good quality. It could use a better type of stitch. It is way bigger than it looks in the picture. It is 22" long and 3.5" wide when Velcroed together and flat. Nice.

The storage bag is also huge. It is roughly the size of a sleeping bag stuff sack. There are no issues putting everything in there. As a matter of fact, if you plan on carrying this to different places, you could keep a pair of shoes, a towel, and your workout clothes in it with the bands. (I just did it to make sure)

*Now, how bands work. You either have to know calculus really well or just read below.

Skip this paragraph if you have an idea how figuring band weight works.
Most bands I have seen have their rated weight occurring at 300% stretch. When they talk about stretch or percent stretch, here is what they mean. I like easy numbers so we are going to say the tubes on these bands are 40" long. 100% stretch means you are stretching it an additional 100% of its original length or double. Therefore the band is now 80" long. At 200% stretch, it is 120" long or triple. At its max of 300% stretch it is a whopping 160" long or quadruple. That's right. Your band that is a hair over a yard long needs to be stretched to almost 4.5 yards to reach its rated weight on the tag. Most exercises use the band folded in half, so you only have to stretch it to 2.25 yards. That is actually not too bad for some exercises. Remember, if you fold a band in half like you do when using the door anchor, you have to double the weight listed on the band. So, using the above example and a 10# band, your new 300# stretch length would be 80" (40" / 2 because it is folded in half gives 20". Then 20" x 4 gives 80".) and the weight would be 20# (just 10# x 2).

Now the part that is a bit confusing for some. I did a lot of weight testing while stretching, measuring stretch percentage, and math involving algebra. I came up with Bodylastics' weight ratings are at 100% stretch, not 300% like others. This felt right to me, I just never tested it. I like this because it's less math. Each band is slightly different, so it's give or take. At 150% stretch, it was right around 150% labeled weight. (For all the nerds like me, my actual numbers were 100% stretch = 113% weight and 152% stretch = 153% weight. If I used calculus instead of algebra, the 113% weight would be a lot lower) What this also means is their weight ratings are real and trustworthy. Please note I was doing this solo so take my numbers with a grain of salt.

To give you an idea how to use all of this, I will give an example. My door anchor has an 8# band looped in half, so 16#. I put my right foot in the ankle strap and move just far away to make the band taught. I now measure 22" from where my foot is. (half of the 44" stretchy part of the band since it is looped in half) I now position myself so my right foot ends up at that mark during each exercise. I now know I am pulling 16#. If you want more, make your mark at 33" from your original starting point. That is 150%. If your foot ends there you are doing 24#.

After using these bands for about 1 year I figured I'd update my original review with this more thorough positive review that it deserves. I used to have a gym membership and a full olympic weight set/home gym. Since I got these resistance bands I now have neither of those, I prefer these over both.

RESISTANCE
If you search resistance band exercise on google you'll see only a bunch of pictures of hot girls doing exercises with them. Don't look at it "only girls use resistance bands" it's not true!! I'm 6'1" 180lb and I've never had a problem with not having enough resistance. In fact I think this set might be TOO MUCH resistance! I've never had to use all of the bands at once, I can't imagine anybody ever would. I've never use the yellow (3lb) because it has so little resistance that barely notice it. A girl might find it useful though. When I first reviewed this I thought having 2 oranges was so great but now I realize the extra orange band is really unnecessary. I've found it's better to keep adding additional colored bands. For example instead of a second orange(30lb) use purple (23lb)+Red(8lb). The most resistance I use on any exercise is 80lb for shoulder shrugs (Orange+Purple+Black+Red) Depending on where you step on the bands it will give you more resistance also. It is nice having a variety of different colored bands of different resistances. The layering of bands isn't difficult but sometimes it's nice to just 1 band that is the proper restiacne for your exercise. If I could go back I would probably get the 19pc "Strong Man" set.

THE ESSENTIALS
I don't actually use all of the items in this set. I use 2 short handles, 2 ankle straps, 1 door anchor, 1 anywhere and 6 bands (green, red, blue, black, purple, orange) ) I consider this the essentials.

WEIGHT & SIZE
I travel a lot and everything I own fits in a suitcase. Therefore weight and space is always a consideration. Fortunately these are light and compact. I put the essentials in a 5 liter sack (which probably only occupies about 4 Liters of its space. With all of this in the bag it only weights 1.7kg (3.7lb).

DROP SETS
One of my favorite things about these is how easily I can do drop sets (a drop set is when you continue an exercise with a lower weight once muscle failure has been achieved at a higher weight) There's multiple ways to do drop sets with these:
1. without handles and multiple bands - drop the extra band
2. without handles and one band - hold the band at the top for first reps then slide them down to the bottom for the last ones.
3. with handles and multiple bands - unclip extra bands
4. with handles and one band - move your body toward the anchor point

PRICE
These are cheaper than gym membership or Olympic weight set and it's a one-time purchase...

DURABILITY & SAFETY
All the bands, handles, and anchors seem VERY durable and well made and seem like they should last years even with daily use. One great thing about these is you don't need a spotter You can work out alone and not worry about dropping a barbell on your neck. I wouldn't get resistance bands without the DGS technology. I've never had a resistance band break on me but it just gives me peace of mind.

CLEANUP
Cleanup is very easy, just grab everything and throw it in the bag. Unlike with the olympic weights where the cleanup is like a workout all in itself. I enjoy my workouts a lot more now that cleanup isn't a hassle.

USABILITY
Very easy using the carabiner system clipping and un-clipping them makes you feel like a mountain climber easy to get desired resistance: if it's not enough either take a step forward(or back) to create more tension or stop for a second and clip on one of the smaller bands. There are so many different exercises you can do. Examples on bodylastics website, sometimes you just have to get creative.
I have seen weight and muscle gains using these for bodybuilding. Moving up to"the next color"is always a good feeling, makes you feel like a karate warrior working up to your black belt.

The range of motion you get with these bands is very comfortable natural feeling, unlike some weight machines and barbells that often put your limbs in odd positions while lifting. One downside that I have noticed is that the black piece that attaches the band to the carabiner sticks out and when sometimes rubs against arm or legs and can scratch skin. I don't have any open cuts, just big scrapes. The way they protrude could be a design flaw, but it's also sort of a good thing because if you're using the bands without the handles it gives you more leverage and grip on the bands.

BOTTOM LINE
The gym isn't always open or available and weights are bulky and cumbersome. With these you know you'll always be able to get a good resistance workout. Whether you're using this as a back-up for when the gym is closed or a full-time replacement for your weights or machines these are an option every fitness enthusiast should have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very effective substitute for weights
Reviewed in Canada on August 9, 2023
Color: 3-96LBS Set AssortedVerified Purchase
This resistance training kit might be the best and most cost-effective bit of exercise equipment that I have ever bought. I initially purchased this (along with another higher resistance Bodylastics band) for a 6 week trip where I likely won’t have access to a decent gym, or won’t have time to keep travelling to a gym.

The quality is quite good, other than the somewhat questionable door anchor. The internal ropes provide a better sense of safety – which is the main reason I bought this brand instead of others.

I have a pretty extensive home weight-training gym which uses free weights – including several benches, hex trap, lots of steel plates, pulley equipment, many attachments, etc. Compared to the free weights, these elastic bands seem be easier on the body, but provide longer lasting benefits. This might be partly because my body has become used to free weights, but I think it’s more because the elastics can provide a more linear resistance throughout the range of motion. It’s not actually linear, simply because the elastic resistance becomes greater as it stretches – but it’s better than with free weights. i.e. regular bicep curls have little resistance at the start of the pull, but then becomes much tougher halfway through.

Because of the better linear resistance, (for me) the muscles stay toner for longer. Compared with free weights, I can use less resistance (easier on the body), and have more rest days between workouts without losing muscle tone. And unexpectedly, my muscles seem to be running on a higher metabolic rate days after the workouts – but this might just be a coincidence with other factors.

These resistance bands are great for general strength training and body toning. But it is probably not suitable for power lifters, because the movement dynamics are so different. Also, I don’t see this as being able to replace free weights, because free weights provide a more natural and full range of resistance. I think the resistance bands and free weights are good complements to each other, and I will continue using both in my home workouts (likely alternating them, instead of using both in the same workout). I can actually use just the resistance bands if I didn’t already have a home gym, and I can definitely just use the bands on long trips.

BTW, I use this package with better anchor straps (hood loop straps - the type used to anchor ropes to the hood of a car), because I’m skeptical of the anchor which came with the kit. Also, I am using some good climbing carabiners to avoid nicking the bands on the anchor straps (which will cause them to snap). And I got some tree safe straps to anchor the bands to poles, trees, etc if a suitable door is not available. For presses, I instead use swivelling push up bars, which are great. These items cost more than the original resistance kit – and the entire combined package does take up a lot of space in the luggage.

I reallly wanted to simplify my life and have the least amount of "stuff" in my home. I got rid of my workout tower and free weights and replaced them with these amazing resistance bands and a set of rings attached to my ceiling. That's basically all you need to get an awesome workout. These resistance bands are easily the best I have ever used. The handles are comfortable and the bands provide a nice consistent resistance during a workout. You can easily combine bands to get virtually any level of resistance that you need. They also come with a convenient storage bag. I would highly recommend these as a great replacement for physical weights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good strength
Reviewed in Canada on April 16, 2023
I'm a certified fitness trainer, and like the option of working out at home. I'm impressed with the tensile strength of the stronger bands in the set--the 30 lb and the next one down. With this set of resistance bands, I wanted something strong enough to do lat rows. I had bought a different set last year and found it pretty wimpy-- not a real challenge at all--even using all 5 bands included at once. I gave them away. But this set is totally different.

One good thing to know--although it may be obvious to many--is that the rated strength of a resistance effectively doubles when you loop it around something and so are pulling on two strands. When I do my lat rows I loop it around a sturdy hook, attach each end to a handle, and row with both hands. The 30 lb band looped like this gives 60 lbs of resistance, and the top two bands together give close to 100 lbs (96). If I added the next one down, I could get 122 lbs. I have ordered an extra 30 lb band separately for $28, to grow into as I get stronger.

I like the handles -- very ergonomic and well built. Same for the clippable O-rings--obviously good quality.

I found this set at the recommendation of the New York Times consumer review column, The Wirecutter, which rate the Bodylastics set #1. I'd have to say I agree with them, based on my inital experience.
