Product Description
Tom Clancy’s The Division is a ground-breaking RPG experience that brings the genre into a modern military setting for the first time. In the wake of a devastating pandemic that sweeps through New York City, basic services fail one by one, and without access to food or water, the city quickly descends into chaos. As an agent of The Division, you’ll specialize, modify, and level up your gear, weapons, and skills to take back New York on your own terms.
From the manufacturer
Take Back New York
Welcome to a next-gen experience in a persistent and dynamic open world environment that is built from the ground up for co-op and where exploration and player progression are essential. Teaming up with other Division agents, your mission is to restore order, investigate the source of the virus, and take back New York.
Seamless Multiplayer: The Dark Zone
Enter the Dark Zone, a walled-off quarantine zone in the middle of Manhattan where the most valuable loot was left behind when the military evacuated. It’s also the most dangerous area in the game, where fear, betrayal, and tension are high. Team up with other players to take down your enemies and extract legendary loot via helicopter. It’s your choice to collaborate with other agents, or attack them and steal their loot.
Urban Jungle
New York City is being overrun by hostile groups trying to take advantage of the crisis. Beware of the thugs who roam in packs through the city, preying on the weak. Fight against the Cleaners, who wear hazmat suits and wield flamethrowers, set on cleaning New York from the virus by burning everything and everyone. Engage with the Rikers, a gang of convicts that escaped Rikers Island when the chaos hit, and who are ravaging the city and vying for its control.
Gear Up and Customize your Agent
Harness state-of-the-art technology, both networked and prototype, as a member of The Division. Customize your character and your backpack, your lifeline in mid-crisis New York. Communicate with other agents at all times with your smartwatch. Loot fallen enemies and customize and level up your weapons, gear, and skills.

The good:
+ The Atmosphere and environment in this game are fantastic. Walking through the incredibly detailed world feels more engrossing than any other game I have played in recent memory. The sights and sounds establish weight, the random encounters with enemies as you are making your way from one place to another feel natural. The size of this environment is hard to explain because there are building interiors and subways, but it feels enormous. The fact that you have to walk/run everywhere you go may seem like it could be a chore but it hasn't ever felt that way - the world feels real and there are enough random events to keep you on your toes.
+ Character movement/cover work really well. I have had very few hiccups using the cover system and the player animations are very impressive. Controls feel good and responsive and the game allows you to get into tactical positions with relative ease.
+ Gear galore. There are a LOT of different weapons to be had in this game and I love the fact that they are using real life guns. AUG, AR, AK, M9, 1911, etc. etc. Add to those all the different mods that can be swapped from and you have a pretty nice variety of things to lust after. Certain mods boost weapon stats in different ways so it's fun to experiment. Outside of guns you have all your other gear (kneepads, coats, shirts, scarfs, gloves, pants, boots, holster) that can be dropped/looted throughout the world to keep things interesting.
+ The gunplay/fighting is solid for a 3rd person game. The AI is actually pretty impressive at times... When you come across a group of baddies they will try to move from cover to cover in an attempt to flank you. The sniper bad guys are crack shots and you have to play it smart with them. They are the right amount of difficult for the most part and if you use your acquired skill trees correctly you can make it through most missions on the normal difficulty without much frustration. NOW - if you are a masochist and enjoy challenges you can set the missions to HARD right out of the gate and you will absolutely be replaying certain checkpoints several times to figure out the best strategy to defeat your foes. Your reward is better gear at the end and more "credits" for buying things at the vendors.
+ The character talent and skills are a lot of fun to play with. I don't see enough people mention this, but the gadgets you unlock are a lot of fun to use. I can't get away from using the Pulse skill to detect enemies through walls and structures along with my mini auto turret that can draw fire from me as I move to more tactical positions. If you are playing with a full team you can definitely strategize and come up with a great role based build.
+ Things to do. There are a lot of collectibles, side missions, main quests, etc. Depending on the encounters you do you unlock points to put towards your base. As you build up your base you unlock more skills that your player can take advantage of. This world is so enjoyable, I may actually try to get all of those collectibles for once.
+ Potential - This game has tons of it. There is plenty of value in the game out of the gate. Looking at how polished the game play is on release and the amount of gear/customization available, I think this game sets up for something special for a long time. Dark Zone is a great concept. They need to figure out a balance on how to make it feel even more risky/rewarding. My time in the DZ has actually been incredibly civil, with groups running together taking out baddies and very few rogue players attacking other people. That may change, but after my first 15 minutes in there the tension was lost as everyone was just being helpful.
The bad:
- The main mission variety has been limited. The missions consist of going to a place, killing all the enemies as you make your way to a "boss" fight. The boss is usually a leader of some sort and is a bullet sponge so he is just heavily armored with powerful weapons. To be fair, the environment and your approach does have to vary from mission to mission, but I have been waiting for something to catch me off guard. (ex. holy sh##! Is that guy in a bulldozer?!? -- or something like that) They are still fun to play and feel rewarding upon completion.
- The story itself is lackluster. It's not difficult to follow by any means, it just doesn't have a lot of oomph. The situation/setting of the story is great and all the little collectibles that share moments as the outbreak was taking place are fun, but the main story just lacks horsepower.
Conclusion: Controls, polish, gameplay, atmosphere, potential, and genuine fun. This game as a lot going for it. Enough so that I am overlooking the somewhat formulaic main missions and underwhelming main story. The pros overshadow the cons and to be honest the cons are nitpicking. I wish I could give 4.5 stars because that's how I really feel. Get this game, but do yourself a favor and take your time and enjoy the ride as you play through it.
Manhattan covered in snow, the epidemic with an unknown origin, elite government sleeper cells, and the endless body dumps make this game feel unique. It doesn't feel like any game I have played, which is great. Every gamer can appreciate a developer trying to be different and Division does a great job making the atmosphere something I want to keep revisiting.
The perks, so far, have been meaningful. I can see that with certain combinations of gear, weapons, perks, and skills my team and I can have different character builds. It is too early to see what works and what doesn't, but I can definitely see that there is the possibility to have squad member differences.
Solid multiplayer structure is so important. I love being able to drop-in and drop-out quickly. When you're sneaking a game session while your wife is in another room, you want to be able to drop-in with your friends, beat a mission, and drop-out quickly before your wife notices you've turned off this weeks episode of the Bachelor. Diablo 3 is my favorite example of this. I can play within 1 minute and leave even faster than that.
The guns, the explosions, and the cover system work together great! I changed the two most important toggles on the control screen before I started playing the finished version. I'm not sure if these two toggles were in the beta, but removing yourself from cover and turning corners in cover needed to be changed. I always found myself, during the beta, accidentally leaving cover and getting shot to crap. This pissed me off so much... especially in the dark zone. I also accidentally turned corners when in cover and died too many times. Now that this is changed, I'm a solid killing machine.
Nothing gets my heart pumping more than random PVP encounters. Demon's Souls and Diablo 2 did a good job with PVP and I'll never forget it. Division and the dark zone create the highest level of stress, in a videogame, that I've felt since the Demon's Souls days. When you have some good loot and you want to extract and someone challenges you... it is better than drugs. My heart rate goes through the roof and I am so angry when I lose to a squad and they steal my loot. It is a great system and I'm glad that it was thought up and implemented.
Overall this game does enough right in order to deserve your attention. Open your wallet and spend that money because I need more dark zone victims to kill. I'm not sure what the end game looks like, but I can see a lot of fun for me and my friends in the future. Please give this game a try, I think you will like it.
