This is the type of game that I love! Strategy-based, but does require some real-time intervention & is an ever-evolving combination of creation & puzzle-solving.

The potential drawbacks/cautions:
1. This will suck up a LOT of time. I installed the game on a rainy Saturday afternoon, started playing/building my first city, and eventually looked down at my phone to see what time it was and realized I'd been playing for about 6 hours straight. Seriously. It's immersive and time will fly by. This isn't the type of game you can jump onto for 20 minutes and then move on to other things.
2. This may drive you to spend money on a new PC/hardware. I thought I had a decent laptop. And it worked just fine for about 12 hours of cumulative gameplay. But now my first city has grown large enough that the graphics card is maxed out, and the CPU isn't far behind. Every element of the city can be clicked on and you'll see tons of detail that is being tracked by the game. Example: every car on the roads can be clicked on, and you'll see details of the specific driver, it's origin, destination, and route. With thousands (even tens of thousands) of individual "cars" driving around, that's a lot of processing power being used. About to buy my first desktop PC in 15+ years so I can have sufficient hardware (and ability to upgrade components) to handle this game.
3. Mods: the open-source nature of this game means there are hundreds/thousands of mods that can be obtained - some for a fee, most for free. Of course each additional mod requires more computing power, and there's the possibility that some mods won't play well with each other. So far I've only purchased the base game, but there are a few of the expansion packs that I'll probably end up buying.

Let me start by saying, I have found my way back home. The very last game I played like this was SimCity 4. To say I was a huge fan is an understatement. I was heartbroken when the series faded away and even more devastated when they released a new version last year. I never thought I'd find that kind of gaming satisfaction again. With that said, please know that Cities Skylines is not a SimCity clone. At least not to me. It has its own uniqueness that causes it to stand fully on its own.

***My only complaint is that "STEAM" thing... which I absolutely hate. If it wasn't for this, I would have rated the game a five. Personally, I prefer the option of buying a disk or downloading free of any other third-party software. THIS IS TERRIBLE IN A MAJOR TIME-CONSUMING KIND OF WAY. I could care less about other video games, advertisements, downloading other games, etc. and all the other crap that is thrown at you just just trying to get into STEAM for the first time, and install the game. Plus, I had so many problems installing the games AND very little help. STEAM will probably cause me never to buy another game again. Who knows what will happen to my software and saved games once they come out with a new version or some update. Probably won't be able to access it anymore... who knows. OKAY... enough about that..."

Aside from this, I had somewhat of a challenge learning how Cities Skylines works. This wasn't a result of the game but just the amount of time it took "me" to figure out how to play. But after a couple of days (which might be a long time to some people), I must say I have the basics in the bag. There are many cities to choose from -- ranging from islands to wooded areas. The flexibility in designing roads and highways is phenomenal. In fact, I found this part advanced but very easy to figure out. I can say the same thing about setting up power in the city as well. It is also easy to zoom, rotate or otherwise view your city in great, great detail. One of my favorite pass times is watching traffic flow freely through my city. When problems arise in the city, a little news flash pops up to tell you about and escort you to the source of the problem in your city if you choose.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone could give this game a bad rating unless they just don't like these kinds of simulations OR they found themselves frustrated with STEAM or other technical difficulties. I bought another game called Tropical 4 which I enjoy, but it isn't like this one. In fact, I would say that they are night and day. I also tried a series of games like "The Settlers," but none of them gave me the experience that Cities Skylines does. Of course, this game doesn't have dialogue like in my SimCity games back in the day -- but I can live with that. Plus, the graphics are breath taking. (I think I said that already.) Give it a try.

Even though CS:2 has been released, this game has many more mods available to it. In addition, CS:2 almost feels like a beta right now with the performance issues, AI issues, lackluster progression, and general incompleteness of the game.

I highly recommend this game if you want a city builder to play. At the time of this review, this is more of a realistic city builder than CS:2. Until they fix/improve the issues in the sequel, I'm sticking with this one.

*sigh..after a huge disappointment with sim city (I built that entire city a dozen times over and could not get workers to the great works site no matter what) I thought I would give this one a try.
well, there are many things I like and granted I only played about one hour so far but this is my conclusion. The font is teeny teeny tiny and even with reading glasses (which I normally do not wear) it is difficult to see. so that is a HUGE thumbs down. no matter the setting the font remains unreadable.
There is no in game manual so in order to learn what to do I have to keep getting out of the game and going to look it up..another thumb down.
I have power lines everywhere, wind turbines etc and still wont show a connection of electricity.
blinking icons and no understanding of wth is wrong.
youtube was a help getting started though with tutorials etc.
I like the camera being able to get right down to street level is really nice, the graphics are nice,
that is just an hour play into it, I gave up trying to figure it out today, maybe I will come back to it.
taxes are adjusted much differently in this one than sim city with each being controlled via sliders
this game has much more depth than sim city in many ways, and someday, when I have HOURS just to learn it, I may actually enjoy playing it.
