Comes with Linux NOT Windows. Tiny game selection.
My main disappointment with the newer steam machine faults both Amazon and Dell. The Amazon description is WRONG. this does NOT have Windows 8, it uses Linux. So 75% of the awesome games I pre-bought during the steam sale won't run on this (operating) system. That's amazons fault for posting incorrect stats (or maybe Dells fault for supplying wrong info)I still fault dell/valve for providing to us a gaming machine that runs less than 25% of their gaming library. And the 25% we get are definitely NOT AAA games. At least give an option for Windows or Linux. Now I'm going to have to cough up enorger $100 and spend a day installing Windows.I know there are plenty of fanboys in both windows and Linux camps, not me. I don't care which OS is marginally more stable, faster, user friendly. I just want the one that was advertised, and plays my games.Attached are pictures showing the "Top Sellers" and "Popular New Releases".

Bought this console to use as a computer with our TV and for my wife to play WOW on while in the living room without needing to have a huge laptop or desktop. Being that you can load Windows on this unit, I was pretty sure there would be no issues with getting WOW to play. When I received the console, I was impressed with its size, very compact, fits right underneath the TV, takes up very little space. With a wireless keyboard and mouse, this is a great little computer. I did try loading up WOW using the Steam OS, but was not impressed with the OS. Instead, I loaded up the newest version of Linux (I do NOT use windows) and loaded up WOW. Took a few tweaks to get WOW working properly (mostly tweaking crossover and ensuring the right packages were downloaded) and now it is set up for playing WOW. Graphics are pretty good, fps is 60, and haven't really had any issues. My wife uses this to surf the internet, to do some schooling, etc. Everything she would do with a laptop or desktop but much easier to use, much smaller and very portable if she wants to move it to another TV. Definitely would recommend to anyone wanting something smaller, easy to move and cheaper. By the way, I did price building a desktop for my wife, and found it would be more expensive with the components that I would have added. And the size would have been much larger and not as convenient or easily movable. In addition, if you are not interested in the Steam games (which we were not), then loading another OS would be recommended.

Very buggy console. With the i3 I've been experiencing periodic freezing and stalling. Controller is experiencing wireless connection issues so I find myself using PS3 controllers often. It's not extremely responsive all the time. On the upside I have all the capabilities of a home PC. All of my favorite games from PS2 are available and most of the current generation AAA titles are available. However, when downloading on Steam my downloads stop frequently and I have to repeatedly press resume throughout the download for it to finish. I believe since the hard drive is nearly ancient and they installed as little Ram in this console as possible all I need is to upgrade it but they shouldn't even sale the I3 if it's this buggy with what they install in it. They should just sell the i5 and i7. Luckily I love a challenge and self-education because the average video gamer would not want to go through all of this studying to get comfortable with a gaming console. After spending $60 to upgrade the ram, the console runs current gen games well and older classic games effortlessly. I'm satisfied.

Generally a piece of garbage. After a couple months started getting the yellow blinking light of doom each time when trying to turn it on. Sometimes it will boot if you unplug for a bit but you generally have to disassemble each time and unplug the battery. Each time you do it also messes up the power management settings and it sleeps randomly, sometimes after a minute or so. Given the abundance of youtube videos and articles describing the same problem, I'm assuming it's not limited to me.

OMG, what a neat little machine! The SteamOS was fine but decided to install Windows 8 (Windows 10 just has too many bell and whistles), which was an easy installation and configuration. Also, I had some spare parts so I replaced the 4GB RAM (L) that it came with with 8GB 1600s RAM, and also the HDD with a 256 GB SSD. I purchased a UGREEN USB Extension Cable USB 2.0 also just to hook up a wired keyboard and the wired controller (I prefer wired as I don't like having to remember to replace the batteries for the wireless inputs) so I can just surf on the couch, game, or watch movies. I did notice that, since I put it in a cubby in the TV cabinet, I've had to point the fan at it to dissipate the heat created in that small space. All in all, it's a worthy buy at $308 + the 3 year ext. warranty. I researched the CPU replacement and bloggers stated that it wasn't worth upgrading it as the gaming performance-gain was negligible so I'm leaving the Alpha with what I upgrade it to. Oh, and if you have a 720p TV, you might have issues with its resolution. I had to upgrade to a 1080p just so that I didn't have to diddle with the screen size.

I've had this little box for about 4 months now, and I'm really impressed with its performance, after a few tweaks.

Firstly, I upgraded the HDD to a 500GB Samsung Evo SSD. That should be the first upgrade you do with this little box, because it goes from "Meh" to "Wow!" really fast with just this single upgrade.

Secondly, I threw in 16GB of RAM, because the 2x8GB kit was only marginally more expensive than the 2x4GB kit. Really, 8GB is probably perfectly fine for this little box.

And lastly, I put Windows 10 on the box. SteamOS is fine, and I love GNU/Linux, but there are a few games (Elderscrolls games) that I need Windows for, so there you have it.

It took a little while, but I adjusted to the Steam Controller, and now I can't play a game without it. It does take some time to get a feel for it, and more often than not I need to tweak the controller for each game, but that's part of what makes it great.

This little machine is super easy to take apart and upgrade all the components, as well as clean the fans and heatsinks. It's also super small and fits really nicely in my entertainment stand. It does get a little loud when running at 100% utilization, but generally the sound-bar drowns out the fans.

Unigine Valley benchmark I get an 844 on Extreme HD settings. Skyrim Special Edition sits between 35fps and 55fps Maxed out. But I downloaded MSI Afterburner and overclocked the GPU by 135mhz and the RAM by 400mhz. Temps only rose slightly, but I saw a 14% performance boost and hit 954 on Unigine Valley benchmarks.

Short and sweet version:
Upgrade to an SSD, 8GB of RAM, and if you throw windows on there use MSI Afterburner to overclock the GPU. It's a great little box that holds its own against the Xbox One and PS4 while still retaining a huge library of games because it's a PC.
