The RE270K works with your existing home Wi-Fi without the need for a separate hub or paid subscription service. This will help you save money and allow you to outfit your home with other TP-Link Smart Home devices like Light Bulbs, Switches and Plugs.

Convenient For Simple On-Off Power Control via Alexa or App
    4 Stars
Convenient For Simple On-Off Power Control via Alexa or App
This TP-Link Smart Plug is another useful device from the TP-Link company. I've used many TP-Link products over the years, particularly routers, and have been impressed with the quality and ease of use of their products. I also have their Smart Bulbs, that work consistently well in comparison to several other competitors' smart bulbs i've tried, and this Smart Plug, like my TP-Link bulbs, is easily controlled by Alexa. This TP-Link Smart Plug is easy to set up. You download TP-Link's "Kasa" app to your smartphone, sign-up for an account, and follow the simple directions. As some reviewers have noted, the on-app instructions are much more thorough and take you by the hand, in comparison to the short instruction paperwork included in the box. You plug this Smart Plug into an outlet and pair w your home network by following the instructions shown. If you've paired other smart devices into your home, this will be old hat. If you have not, you'll find the directions on your app simple, short and understandable. The Kasa app itself is basic, but functional- you add and name each smart device, and in the case of this Smart Plug, you control the on/off power capability from your phone, to include simple scheduling (turn on every M, W and F at 7am, etc...) and timing (turn off after 1 min to 23 hours). The power button over the plug outlet, which glows green when the power is set to ON, can also be manually toggled as an on/off switch by pressing. As a wi-fi range extender, you can see total clients on your network, connection speeds, the name of the network they are on, and network details such as the uplink signal strength and speed at the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz options. If you already have TP-Link smart devices and a Kasa account, you simply add your new Smart Plug to your existing devices. To add Alexa functionality, you need an Amazon Alexa device of course, and the Alexa app. After you've set up the TP-Link Smart Plug to work within the Kasa app, you need to ensure you press the Smart Plug icon (or whatever icon pic you choose for this smart plug), go to the Settings, and enable "Remote Control." You then goto the Alexa app and enable the Kasa app in "Skills" and link to your Kasa account (you need to have signed up for a Kasa account- you can't just be using as a Guest). You then press Alexa app's "Smart Home" area, "Devices," and at the bottom of your devices, press "Discover Devices." This should show you your newly added TP-Link Smart Plug (if you already have Kasa set up in Alexa due to other Kasa devices, this Smart Plug will show up automatically). You can then make voice command to Alexa to control your Plug. Writing this out sounds a lot more complex than it is- it's not too difficult to make this work in real life w a few caveats: it's critical to ensure that you have the most recent Kasa firmware and Alexa updates for your apps. The older Alexa app won't work w Kasa, as I found out by calling TP-Link's 24-7 available customer service line. They were helpful and quickly resolved the problem. Very good customer service.Overall, I'm pleased with this Plug, that adds smart home functionality to my "not-smart" devices, and there is no hub required. The main reason I deducted a star, is that this plug takes up a full outlet (you can't use the second plug on standard wall outlets) and it is very bulky in design, sticking fairly far out of your wall. I am also not too impressed with the wi-fi extension capability, as it does not seem to improve my speeds in an appreciable manner in the more remote areas of my home where I tried setting this up. Still, it's pretty useful for being an Alexa controlled power outlet.btw, some not-smart devices you may have, which contain auto-off features in the event of power outages or disruptions, will not work with this plug just due to their own internal fail-safes. This is not a criticism of this Smart Plug, just an observation that may irritate you when you notice that many of your devices will not just turn back on when power is restored.

This item was recommended to me since working from home and phones being transferred to us at home. It allowed me to plug in the Ethernet for my work phone and gave me extended coverage so I was not stuck close to my router. I placed this in an office at the other side of my house and it works great. Highly Recommended and very easy to set up..

I like Kasa (TPLink) products, I have smart bulbs and smart plugs (and routers and extenders in the past) from them and I'm very pleased with them. Performance wise, the extender does its job great. I gave it 4 stars simply because the darn thing blocks the second plug of the outlet no matter which one you put it in. I suppose for most people that's not an issue, but we have our router in the fourth bedroom which we use as an office, so the extender actually is in the living room for the smart lock and the (not Kasa brand smart bulbs I don't like that are eventually being replaced with Kasa bulbs soon) smart bulbs and when the Google Home enabled speaker is out on the patio. So it's in a room where outlet space is at a premium because of all the electronics and lamps. Taking up that second plug can be frustrating since I'd like to have two things plugged into the outlet it's in.

Otherwise... It's a great extender/plug. Right now I have the space heater plugged into it so I can set the schedule for the heater. The wifi extension works well. The smart lock was occasionally dropping the wifi in the kitchen, and there has been no problem at all since I put it on the extender. The coverage is plenty enough that when the Google Home Enabled speaker is outside on the patio, it keeps a strong signal no matter where it sits. My phone might be able to get a solid signal, bit some of the smart products have lousy receivers, so the extender solves the problem perfectly.

I got an amazing deal, 75% off of regular price on Amazon. It was easy to setup, I linked it to my TP-Link AC 4000 router. Don't really need it as a Wi-Fi extender but use it to hard wire my old Xbox 360 in my son's room. The USB Wi-Fi antenna for the 360 quit working and even on Ebay they are still around $70 new verses only paying $15 for this product. It is dual band and that is really nice if you are needing a Wi-Fi extender. Oh, did I mention the built in smart plug that can be controlled by Amazon Alexa or Google devises. I recommend this product.

This review is for the RE270 smart I selected this particular product because it is handy to have a smart switch and so that I wouldn't lose an outlet.

Setup was no trouble, although the instructions make it seem more difficult than it really is. There are three problems that caused me to rate it so poorly and return it.

    1) it is huge. I lost an outlet or two because it blocks three outlets on a power strip while adding only one.
    2) I lost half the throughout compared to the Wi-Fi signal it is repeating
    3) The connection is unstable and I get frequent "internet is unavailable" errors even when the Wi-Fi signal is strong both for it and the signal it is repeating. It's just unusable if you expect it to work as well as a normal Wi-Fi router. Since other people rate it highly, maybe the unit I had was defective.

It was relatively easy to install but it doesn’t work as well as I would like. Sometimes it goes out of rang when I’m in the middle of something. I might have a second device right next to it on the same signal and it is fine but the extender will suddenly be out of range. Plus it blocks the other outlet so you would only be able to use the one it is plugged into but not the second one because it’s too big.

If you want to save money and expects a good performance you need to get this item. I am using this to extend my WiFi signal so my Blink XT2 camera located outside can have a better signal. At the same time, I used this as a smart plug for a nearby table lamp. All of my smart plugs, switches, and extenders including powerline adapters are TP-Link. Their Kasa app integrates well with Amazon Echo.

I am an IT Professional but can't pay for expensive and hyped products so I always look for a bang for my limited buck -- TP-Link is the answer. Kudos to this company!

My next project is to do a mesh WiFi on our home once budget comes along... will consider TP-Link as the front-runner.

Note: This review is based on my own personal experience and Amazon can confirm all my purchases. Others may have different views. Nobody influenced me with all my reviews of all the products I purchased.

I smoke on my front porch and the wifi signal can be spotty. I installed this device inside on an exterior wall directly behind where I sit outside and it broadcasts a strong enough signal through the brick wall to serve YouTube videos at 1440p. It also serves the opposite end of the home well enough too. The price I paid ($14.99) makes up for any deficiencies. If you can't find it that cheap or need more bandwidth than what a 1440p YouTube video needs then you will probably want to find a solution that isn't a wifi extender (look at mesh solutions) or at least an extender that is stronger.

This is a great 2-in-1 product. Works for extending the home or office WiFi network while also acting as a smart plug that’s really easy to program in the mobile app. Haven’t picked up any other devices that sync with the Kasa app but I imagine they’ll be just as easy to use.

1.0 out of 5 stars No amplifica casi nada o, de plano, nada
Reviewed in Mexico on March 20, 2020
