Pros:
- For those familiar with the SNES game, this will be VERY familiar. It's not exact, but most of the areas resonate with that game. This is helpful in unlocking some of the secrets throughout the game.
- Game length is good. I wasn't sure how long the game would last for me as I used to be able to beat the SNES game in only a couple of hours. This game lasted quite a while longer. It is loaded with dungeons and boss fights.
- With the addition of the transitioning to wall-walking (appropriate term?), it adds a new layer into the puzzle solving mix. End boss fight is awesome!
Cons:
- Not very intuitive at times. There are points where I had to consult a guide because I was wasting so much time just looking around and not progressing. This includes multiple items that you don't NEED, but you want. I had to do some research to find one or two of them.
- Dungeon layouts. There are points where the dungeons rely too much on the wall walking, or are just not really that creative. Luckily, there are others that are great. Some of them are too short, but again, there are others that make up for that by being much tougher.
- 3-D doesn't really help all that much with judging positions. I found at times that I was misjudging jumps and tried switching between 2-D and 3-D, but for me, I still had trouble judging.
Overall, this game is a great mash-up between two games and it works. Boss fights are fun. There are a lot of bonus features thrown in. It was a lot of fun and I wish I had purchased it sooner.
A Link Between Worlds is roughly based on A Link to the Past for Super Nintendo, so I thought I'd tell you in advance if you aren't aware of this. However, there are some puzzles that have changed, mostly to deal with the game's new gimmick.
This game has really two features that distinguish it from A Link to the Past: (1) the wall painting system, and (2) there are no item chests. Let's talk about the first one. The wall painting system (which is not its actual name) allows Link to stick to walls. For example, if a dungeon has a pit, but there is a long unbroken wall, Link is able to cling in 2D to the wall, then pop out from the wall. Emerging from the wall pushes against objects, so this not only means some objects like pots are broken and for the occasional puzzle that some objects near or on the wall are pushed, but occasionally, it means that you cannot exit the wall. My 3DS is not here yet (again, Christmas present) but I seem to remember the wall painting thing having a time limit before you pop outside. Other features of this system include being able to crawl into holes (either entering buildings or going into the Dark World). As for the second feature, I actually found it annoying (hence 4 stars rather than 5) but it does add to the challenge of the game. Basically, all tool items, unlike Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past, are sold at a shop. If this sounds bad, it gets worse. The sell price of these items are about 500 or so rupees, which is outside your normal price range. Or you can rent them at around 150 rupees, but if you die, it is snatched back (and I think I remember certain places might not allow you to take them). There are certain items that aren't rented, like the bottles and the lantern, but the need to buy items increases the challenge in certain places of the game, leaving you potentially without a needed item. I also like the fun of solving a puzzle or two in order to get to a Big Chest.
I cut my teenage teeth on A Link to the Past, so this was an easy sell for me. But I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't more or less a port -- it is a full re-imagining of that Hyrule in an experience tuned very well for 3DS. Temples take about an hour to complete if you're doing every treasure, the world is easy to get around from an early point, and the Ravio item lease/buy mechanic makes it easy to explore on your own terms. This game is perfect for pick-up-and-play with enough story and style to keep you engaged between play sessions. It's the perfect balance of nostalgia and forward-thinking design.
If you have a 3DS, this game is a must-try. If you don't, it's worth picking up one on sale just for this, especially since they're becoming easier to get at a good deal these days.
