Buying earphones is like buying shoes
    5 Stars
Buying earphones is like buying shoes
Buying earphones is like buying shoes. The both may look great in the box or online, but they both have to fit your particular body. Earphones have to fit the shape of your ears to get their sound to your ears, and they also have to match your hearing. Hearing, like vision, varies from person to person and changes if you’re lucky enough to be around to age. The X4 earphones are a great match for my ears and my hearing. Your mileage will definitely vary.FIT: The Jaybird X4 earbuds come with a variety of tips and wings. Note that the tips and the wings are separate, making it more likely that you’ll find a combination that will work well for you. I didn’t find the foam tips comfortable, but again, it’s like shoes. Just because they didn’t fit me, doesn’t mean they won’t fit you. I liked the regular silicone tips and wings, and I found a combination that fits me well.SOUND: The Jaybird app lets you customize and save equalizer settings. Once you choose one, it stays with the earphones, even if you pair them with something else, like your laptop. The app also lets you share your settings with others and they can share theirs with you. You have an almost endless variety of settings to choose from, and they dramatically change the way that they sound. If you want the bass heavy, you can choose that setting. If you don’t, you can change it. Even when the base is heavy, it’s not muddy. Each instrument is perfectly clear.DESIGN: I’m a klutz. It seems like these earphones were designed to endure even me. First, they're waterproof, so if I drop them in a puddle or in the sink, all is not lost. The cord is flat, so it resists tangling and the wires getting twisted and knotted up. It uses a charging cradle, instead of a tiny flap that covers a teeny USB port like other brands use. Other folks may not like that it means that they have to carry around yet another thing, but the lifespan of a tiny flap around me is about two weeks. Jaybird also sells the cradles separately on their website. They’re not expensive. Get one for home and another for work. The app is also klutz-friendly. It has a thing called “Find My Buds” that will keep track of the last place they were paired. It will even show you a Google map (or an Apple map on an iPhone—it’s your choice) and it will provide directions to their location. I also tend to lose things.PAIRING: I initially had problems pairing them, probably because there are so many Bluetooth devices in my house. I took a few steps outside to pair them the first time and I haven’t had a problem since.MINUSES: The directions don’t make it clear how the X4’s controller should fit into the cradle. There are small “bumps” on the cradle that align with small indents on both sides of the controller. If these aren’t aligned, it may seem like the earphones are charging, but they’re not. See the attached photo.I also wish that the battery life was longer.ADDENDUM:The app: As I said, you can download equalizer settings that others have posted, or create a new one and share it with others. What's most interesting are the downloadable settings that folks have posted that are supposed to make them sound like Bose or JBL earphones. I don't have those earphones to compare, but they add interest to these X4s.An add on: Other earphones have magnets to keep them around your neck when you're not listening to them. You can add magnets to these. I got a 2 pack of Mband magnets here on Amazon and added them. I placed them about an inch from the earpieces to make sure that these magnets didn't affect the sound of the X4s (see photo).ADDENDUM: The app is great, but it’s pretty much hopeless trying to get it to connect to the earphones. I’ve asked Jaybird for help after disconnecting them from Bluetooth, completely quitting iTunes and deleting and then reinstalling the app. Jaybird tech support never answered my email. I guess customers aren’t important to them. Our money pays 100% of every employee’s paycheck, but I guess that doesn’t matter to them. I think I’ll look for another brand soon.

Loved these! Sound quality was great! fit was very comfortable, yet must be inserted into ear gingerly, the small ear piece just broke off. Charging was finicky and had to be jiggled to connect sometimes. Owned 2 years wore 1-2hours 5x/week. See photo. Would purchase these again. My reason: I’ve tried others I enjoy the wireless but prefer the ones that are connected in case one falls out I don’t lose it or break it. I’ve also tried apple AirPods which were hard, uncomfortable and did not last long charger sucked would get clogged or corroded only charged one ear pierce over time and could not use only one ear piece. Only had those maybe 4 months. I’m sure all earbuds have some sort of issue but these the jaybird x4 so far were my favorite.

    Pros...
    Excellent, customizable sound
    Fully water-resistant
    Great fit
Powerful audio performance that is completely customizable using the app's EQ

    Cons...
    Battery life
    A bit pricey
    Proprietary charging clip is bulky

The Jaybird X4 sports headphones have a lot going for them. They’re well-designed and they sound great, in addition to staying nicely in your ears. The app is a nice touch too. The app (available for iPhone and Android) allows you to customize the frequency response to your preferences. In layman’s terms, it’s a super customizable equalizer.

Offering a comfortable fit, outstanding waterproofing, and adaptable audio, the Jaybird X4 wireless sports earphones are a great choice for anyone looking for a new pair of Bluetooth earbuds.
