- looks nice
- generally fits well and secure
- sound quality is decent
Cons:
- battery life is poor, 2-3 hours tops
Now the major con:
- Bluetooth connectivity is pure garbage
And that's the major drawback to these. The pros don't matter if it stayed connected to my phone. But the X4 doesn't, and that makes them totally worthless. There's a serious flaw in the design of the Bluetooth receiver on these. I can set my phone on a table and walk 20-30 feet away with no dropouts, but put my phone in my chest coat pocket and go for a walk and I get constant dropouts to the point the X4 is not listenable. I can even carry my phone in my hand, on the same side of the receiver, and I'll get dropouts. There must be an issue with movement on these, because when the phone is stationary they work okay, but when both are in movement (such as during a walk), they just don't work. For a $130 headset, I would avoid like the plague. There must be better alternatives which work and are cheaper than these. Check the Jaybird support forums and others have the same issues, and their customer support is completely unhelpful (all they do is say reset the headset, turn off and on Bluetooth from your phone). They need to acknowledge the design flaw here and either issue fixed replacements or refund.
A totally regrettable purchase.
I quickly found a common issue with the X4's refusing to power on (a problem with occasionally plagued my X3's). This particular issue appears to be less of an issue now. I really don't know why (but I have a suspicion, which I'll get back to in a moment).
I find the startup/power on sound to be far too quiet. This appears to be intentional, in response to complaints I've seen regarding the X3's power on tone being too loud. I am hard of hearing, so in a noisy environment I sometimes have difficulty telling when it's actually turned on, or gone into pairing mode, which I don't want it to do. It's taken some trial and error, but this might explain why I have less issues with it.
Just like with the X3's, it's taken a bit of trial and effort finding the most comfortable ear cushion and stabilizer fit. I had a tough time getting them to sit in the just oh so right position to get a good seal, and thus, proper bass response. I still have issues with them shifting around when I move my head, causing them to come unseated, which kills the sound quality, forcing me to ahve to constantly shift them around to get them to seal again. (Pro tip - it's a little gross, because earwax taste, but a small bit of moisture from your tongue or wet finger on the rubber cushions can help them seal in better).
I find the foam cushions just don't fit my ears well, but this is why they give you so many different tips/stablizers. you just gotta try them all till you find what feels better and most comfortable for you.
Battery life is great, and sound quality is decently improved over the X3's, but still sonically subpar to my older corded etymotic ER-6 and ER-6i, esp when paired with a good headphone amp (I have a few 18V Cmoybb's from JDS labs), but being cordless makes them FAR more convenient for daily use, esp when walking/running/bike riding.
There is an included app which can be used to fine tune the sound settings. I personally don't care much for these sorts of things, but if you do, they're there.
Overall, if you have any previous Jaybird's, these are an excellent upgrade/replacement. But be aware of the know issues with the refusal to turn on and the fitting.
Top reviews from other countries
I use it quite often while running and have never had an issue of it working itself lose. Also its water resistant, so I don't have to worry about getting it wet from sweat (which my last pair didn't have). Only downside I can find is that it takes a bit to find the right spot/position in the ear where it is comfortable. The larger support flare thing is a bit rigid on one part and can make the ear a little sore after awhile in the wrong spot. All in all quite happy with it. Would recommend!

The Jaybird X4 sports headphones have a lot going for them. They’re well-designed and they sound great, in addition to staying nicely in your ears. The app is a nice touch too.
