This machine really fits the bill. The bread is very good - light and fluffy, but able to be sliced for sandwiches and toast. The machine is very simple to operate, and once you press "start," you walk away from it until it's done.
Pros:
- So simple to use. Plug in, add ingredients, press button, boom. Bread.
- Recipes in the instruction book work great and taste great.
- Comes with a measuring cup for liquid ingredients and a measuring spoon for dry measurements of tsp / tbsp.
Cons:
- The machine is "loud" when it's kneading. You can definitely hear it across the house. The kneading phase is usually 2 or 3 per bread cycle, and it lasts for anywhere from 5-10 minuets at a go. The "loudness" of the machine is subjective, and it personally doesn't bother me. But if you're looking for something that you'll forget is running, then this isn't it.
- Like most bread makers, the kneading / mixing paddle at the bottom gets "stuck" in the loaf as it's baking. So getting the bread out means turning the pan upside down and shaking the loaf loose, which leaves a hole in the last 2 pieces of bread. Really not a huge problem, but worth mentioning.
Nice to know:
- Since you're not adding any preservatives, keep the finished product in the fridge. We've found a 2lb loaf lasts us about a week before getting moldy.
- The loaves are a different size than a typical loaf of bread bought at a store. Store bought bread is usually a longer, smaller loaf, whereas there are bigger and shorter in length.
- A finished loaf will usually fit in a gallon-sized ziploc bag, to keep it fresh. I'm still searching for the best solution for this.
Helpful tips:
- I always sift the flour when I add it to the machine - it's helped keep the finished loaf light and fluffy.
- Using bread machine yeast (I got a jar of it at Walmart, but you can find it anywhere) versus the small packets makes it easier to measure out the correct amount for the recipe, because one packet of yeast will make 2.5 loaves. You can't just add a whole packet per recipe.
- I use a scale to measure the flour needed for each batch, so I don't add too much flour by compacting it in a measuring cup. My favorite recipe uses 490 grams of flour, and that's way easier to keep consistent then how much I'd get using a measuring cup.
Food for thought:
With bread going for anywhere from $3.79-$6.19 in the store right now, getting this bread maker is an upfront expense that really pays off. Getting all the ingredients to start at Walmart will run ~$15, and each loaf costs about $1.48 make. The ingredient you'll use the most of is the bread flour. All the others - oil, salt, sugar, yeast - you'll be able to make several batches before needing to replace them.
Just use the book to learn how to use the controls and then go find the no fuss cookbook.
Here are my observations:
1. Looks well designed mechanically which is often the downfall of inexpensive kitchen appliances.
2. Operation is straight forward with sensible control functions and mechanically well designed buttons. A lot of kitchen appliances use membrane type buttons that dont provide as much positive feedback at the buttons on this machine.
3.Someone complained that this machine is noisy. Its not nearly as noisy as machines I have heard in the homes of friends. It is actually among the quieter of the machines I have heard in operation. You can experience the noise levels on many machines on youtube reviews.
4. I posted a question about the dimensions of the loaf but did not get any useful answers. I wanted to know if a slice of this bread wold bit in my toaster. It does not. width wise its fine but a slice is too tall to go all the way down into the toaster. You have to cut the slices in half (or down by and inch and a half if you want as large a slice to toast as possible.
5. Its easy to clean but there are some sharp sheet metal notches in the bottom of the machine where the pan attaches. I could see that being a real problem to clean if you ever have an experimental bread making missadventure that gets that part of the machine dirty.
6.It stays reasonably cool during the baking process.
7. The machine has a small footprint which was an important detail in my purchase decision. I live on my sailboat and space is at a premium.
8. The manual is the weak component of this product. I say that as someone who does not read manuals unless I really have to. Even though the manual is not very good the ingredient amounts seem to be very accurate (based on a single loaf). The ingredient amounts are given in grams in addition to volumetric measurements of cups and teaspoons.
The manual's shortcoming are as follows:
1. There are no times provided for the various stages of the process. This is inconvenient if you want to estimate when you need to be around to add ingredients like nuts or berries is sweet breads.
2. There are no instructions about how to program it using the "homemade"option. The manual says it gives you complete control over the process but does not tell you anything about how to do that. Ill just have to figure that out for myself.
3. There is no information on how to download a pdf version of the manual. Reading the manual can be helpful when trying to decide about buying a product and I like to have manuals in a format that lets me use them on my phone or tablet.
Conclusions
I would have given this product starts for its good design and value for the price except for the manual.
Ill be watching the bread maker market place for a machine that has wifi connectivity. My cosori air fryer came with that feature and I initially thought it was probably a gimmick. It's incredibly handy and would be really useful for a bread machine if the app that controlled the machine could save recipes and custom settings. It could also repeat the machine alarms for things like ingredient additions or when the process was finished and you need to remove the loaf from the machine.
