Battery life isn’t that great and could be better, but you have to think of this as a high performance gaming laptop not some inexpensive low power machine that you buy off the shelf at a large box store. The video card defiantly drains power and this is going to be a hinderance to any gaming laptop.
Overall, though super happy with this system and would recommend.
I was impressed with how easy this laptop was to set up in its plug and play design. The first thing that I noticed was how heavy the laptop is and that definitely gives me some validation in the thought that it will hold up with time. The backlit keyboard is a wonderful amenity and it’s various ports allow for various gaming capabilities. I was able to put an external hard drive to it with no problems. The brilliant display is really what separates this laptop from so many others and is definitely worth the money. It really made me believe I was right there in the game. Definitely has a wow factor!
I would absolutely recommend this laptop to my fellow gamers.
There are a couple of other things to be aware of. There is no Windows Hello compatible camera, so no face recognition, and the camera is placed under the screen, so you get that flattering up-the-nose shot during video conferencing. No fingerprint reader or other biometrics either. There is no touch screen, which I understand is normal for gaming laptops. And the battery life is…, well, if you’re going to be gaming, you’re going to be plugged in. It’s also a pretty heavy laptop, especially with the power supply brick, which is huge.
There are some pleasant surprises though. The keyboard can be backlit and it has a very good feel to it. A pro and con is that there is a number pad on the right, which centers the regular keyboard over to the left. The touchpad area is shifted left, centered under the keyboard. This took some getting used to, but if your use included a lot of number keying I imagine it would be pretty nice to have the keypad. In fact, with the keyboard, CPU power, fast SSD and crisp display I’ll bet this would be a great machine for anyone that lives in spreadsheets all day. Another nice surprise was the built-in Ethernet port; no need for an adapter!
I’m going to be using this laptop for software development, so I did some benchmarks building the eShopOnContainers project you can find on GitHub. It’s a fairly large solution with dozens of projects. I first did an initial dotnet build to fetch all dependencies and then a dotnet clean, so there would be some actual building to do, and then a timed dotnet build. The Legion completed the build in around 15 seconds each time. For comparison I did the same process on my work laptop, which is a Dell Precision 5530 with an eighth gen i7-8850 running at 2.6 GHz, 32 GB of RAM and an SSD. Both machines have 6 multithreaded cores for a total of 12 CPUs. The Dell took anywhere from 18 – 24 seconds to do the build. To be fair, the Dell is an enterprise machine with all sorts of ‘stuff’ running on it to keep us safe. So the Legion is going to be a sweet dev box. It also feels snappier and smoother overall.
There are also things I like about it: the chiclet keyboard works well and feels good enough even for an adult guy like me. The matte black look is understated and doesn't make me feel like I'm lugging around my teenage kid's gaudy RGB-infested gaming laptop.
I also really like that it's upgradable. I got the less-expensive model, and then installed my a 1 Tb 2.5" SSD on my own. And as the cost of storage goes down even further, I can conceive of putting a 4 Tb drive in. It's easy and fast to upgrade (although you have to take off the whole bottom half of the shell, which isn't particularly user-friendly / user-serviceable).
But for 2020, it's also lacking in several important areas.
The screen is just 1080p -- 4k is the standard now (my Asus gaming laptop from 2017 has a 4k screen). It looks fine because the screen is still just laptop-sized, but it's nothing impressive.
Battery life is atrocious: at best, 3 hours, but under normal use it's closer to 2. Unlike most other modern laptops (including my 2017 Asus), which boast 6-8 hours. I could understand if it were 8 hours with power-saver settings, 2 hours full-speed gaming, but that's not the case (more like 3 hours if you have everything disabled and the screen as dim as it'll go, 90 minutes if you're playing demanding games). You're mobile only in the sense that everything you need is contained in the same box.
Which isn't impressive, either. Sure, it's rugged and I like how it looks. I give Lenovo a lot of credit for making a gaming laptop that I as an adult am not embarrassed to carry. But this thing is really heavy for a laptop in 2020. It easily weighs twice what my 2017 Asus weighs.
So in the end, it's a pretty good laptop. It earned those four stars. But it is in no way a five-star gaming laptop, despite the premium price. As it is, this laptop is for people like me -- I work on spreadsheets, I write code, and I play video games. I like to look like an adult when I'm working, but when I play games it's something more demanding than solitaire.
