There is also a single-player story mode which is kinda designed to work as a tutorial for new players, but has 16 good enjoyable missions, and you can also set the desired difficulty to make it more challenging. The story itself is also pretty good--in fact I personally find the plot to my liking very satisfying, including the way how it ends.
It’s important to note that the nature of Star Wars: Squadron’s multiplayer is very competitive. It features ranking system that can determine your rank when playing one of the multiplayer modes called Fleet Battles, and there’s also E-sports events in the making by the time I made this post. Though playing competitive is optional, as there is an option to create multiplayer custom matches to play Fleet Battles without affecting your rank, as well as playing in a deathmatch called Dogfight.
This game may not be for the faint of heart even for some Star Wars fans, as it takes a while to get used to this game when developing your skills. The skills determines how you control your ship when flying across the maps, and how you manage its complex flight system while shooting at your enemy ships and taking evasive maneuvers to prolong your survival. If you are enthusiastic for flight simulation games or just love to fly Star Wars ships, this game is a must-have.
TLDR - Things that bother me, but don't affect the rating - Racism, restricting faces to one side or the other rather than combined choice of all faces for any side, Voice acting for two characters, and Bugs (which should be patched out.
Negatives - Not as complex as the X-wing series though more complex than Rogue Squadron, Lacks Multiplayer modes (only two modes available presently, though with several settings), Many items locked (but can be unlocked through play in multiplayer), and no split screen.
Positives - Ease of Access and Simplicity are a great asset to this game. It makes it easy to learn to fly even for those who haven't played these types of games before. The singleplayer portion is well done and worth a playthrough. It feels like you are flying a Star Wars Star Fighter. It has a LOT of customization (once you unlock it).
It has some negatives, but overall the positives outweigh the negatives. I am giving it four stars (if more options unlock for multiplayer, it may increase). It's worth buying.
Design Decisions I'm not too fond of -
All reviews are biased to a degree, but there is a certain amount of bias which if included, I think would make it an unfair rating. These items are design decisions I may not like, but they really do not reflect on the story or gameplay, and thus I didn't apply it to my rating. Once again, the following did NOT change my rating, but are some of the top annoying things that I found in the game, one so annoying it has me including it at the top of the rest of the review. Some have pointed out that the creators of this game tried to make it inclusive, which if that was their intent, makes my top annoyance even MORE troubling.
1. Blatant Racism - There is a portion of the game that is blatantly racist against Asians. It makes me uncomfortable and I dislike that they included it. In Hollywood and many entertainment venues today it is popular to make it so that Asians are seen as more effeminate. This means that they can NEVER allow an Asian male to be able to get a girl, or be someone who would be someone girls may find desireable. The 'out' that many have found in their desire to also try to include a gay character is to make the Asian male also a homosexual. While this may be acceptable if they ever ALSO made others homosexuals, generally, the racism can be seen when it explicitly points out that the Asian is gay, while not really highlighting anyone else.
This game does this, it is brief, but it follows this racist attitude. I think this game (it seems to show) was written and crafted primarily (meaning they may have had token minorities in the writing groups) by those who experience white privilege, as one would put it, and so it was not intentional racism (or so I would hope), but nonetheless, it IS racist, and is blatant and as such, a disappointment. I think this game was trying to be inclusive, but when something tries to be inclusive but lacks in the input from others who could point out such problems (such as the racism in this game) it can show the inherent discriminatory attitudes of it's creators.
2. Facial choices - You do not see the faces much of your pilot, but there is an option to choose. They try to include 10 faces or heads for each side...with 5 different races included (and some excluded). The heads are different for each side. I'd have preferred that they allowed a more broad choice so that you could select any head you wanted for any side (meaning out of 20 faces, you'd have 20 choices regardless of which side you chose).
3. Voice acting - Most of the voice acting is actually pretty good, but there are two voices that really got on my nerves. [Spoiler coming]. Two characters really were bad. One was Gunny, who is an alien who they tried to give what sounds like an American Southern accent? It really didn't seem like a southern accent to me (it could have been, just sounded like a really fake one instead) and got on my nerves. The other was Keo, who seemed to be reading the lines off a piece of paper more than acting the lines (the one it most reminded me of was another voice acting job in Mass Effect 3. There is a lady reporter that you can get on your ship, the voice acting seemed VERY similar to that). Otherwise there were a few things that seemed to make the voices out of sync sometimes with the mouths, but overall, the voice acting was decent. Those two voices just grated at times.
4. Bugs - There were a few bugs, but I expect these will be ironed out with patches. There was already a patch available for the game when I put it in. I still had one hard crash of the game, but overall, it ran well and probably will run better soon.
Now, onto things that actually AFFECTED the rating...
Negatives -
1. If you are expecting it to be as complex as the X-wing series or other space sims, think again. This could also be a positive for some people. You do not have as much control over things such as shields, which lasers fire in what way, and other things that you had in the prior X-wing Series. On the otherhand, you have more control than you did in Rogue Squadron. There are no B-wings or Tie Defenders (which made me sad).
In relation, you can adjust shields (For and aft, max and not), lasers and engines/energy by maxing one area out to minimize the others, but you don't have as much control. Target selection is different, but once again, lacks the finesse of the older X-wing series.
It lacks the complexity of many other Space and Flight sims. It is far more arcady.
2. Multiplayer lacks modes. There are two modes, duel and Fleet Battles. In duel, you can fight against others on the internet in starship deathmatches. In Fleet Battles you basically are trying to destroy the others fleet.
There are no other modes. There is no simulator to create your own missions. That's it. You have the ability to chose various scenery to play out these missions which is good, I like the variety, but you don't have a lot of choices in multiplayer mission design or other areas.
3. For a multiplayer game there are a LOT of items that are locked until you unlock them playing online multiplayer. It would be nice (for example, an A-wing helmet and flight suit) to have some of these locked immediately rather than locked.
4. For a console (though I can understand it for a PC) there is NO split screen. You cannot play several people on your console, even if you all have controllers for them. I'd have LOVED it if they included split screen of some sort so you could play with others from your couch, and unlock the awards of multiplayer that way as well. One of the big strengths of consoles is playing with your buddies next to you. This is strictly a solo game on your console, you can play with others from their own consoles, but no buddies next to you on your couch.
Positives -
1. Ease of Access. They have great tutorials that will get anyone up to speed. It should be easy for even the novice pilot to learn how to control their fighter and to fly around in the space battles. For singleplayer, they also have a story mode so that even if they aren't so hot in multiplayer, they can make it through the singleplayer campaign.
2. Simplicity. In conjunction with the above, because it is simpler than many space sims, it is easier for people who have never played these types of games to understand how to play and get into the game.
3. The story is better overall than many other star wars games. They include personal characterizations of various squadron mates and commanders that you interact with. The writing is somewhat in depth, and far more interesting that I expected. This means the single player campaign is actually worth a play through.
4. It has the Star Wars Starfighter feel to it. You feel as if you are in an X-wing or Tie Fighter or any of the other ships.
5. Customization - once you unlock many of the options, you can customize your fighters how you like before you take off on a mission. The Customization options are plentiful and it's fun to debate about which options you are going to include on your ship (or simply in your cockpit) or not.
Conclusion - It has some negatives, but overall the positives outweigh the negatives. I am giving it four stars (if more options unlock for multiplayer, it may increase). Gameplay is good, and the game has enough to make you really feel like you are flying in space. I DID have more crashes of the game via X-box than Playstation (that may be because I played the Xbox version first though), but overall, it's pretty steady. I think it is WELL worth the money at this point, and is money well spent if you like Star Wars, like Space Ships and space sims, or both...or even would like to try to see if you would like them.
May the Force be With you.
