Livescribe 3 Smartpen for Tablets and Smartphones
Simply write on paper and the Livescribe 3 smartpen captures all your notes. Pair it with your Android or iOS device and your notes instantly appear in the Livescribe+ mobile app. Your notes become more useful when they are converted to text, tagged, searchable, and shared with friends and colleagues. With a few quick taps of your finger, your notes can be used in your favorite apps to create contacts, appointments, and more. Record audio that's synced to your handwriting so that you can play it back and relive your lectures and meetings at any time.
How It Works
The Livescribe 3 smartpen is designed with the meticulous attention to detail that a premium writing instrument deserves. From the integrated stylus cap, down to the Swiss-made tungsten-carbide ballpoint ink cartridge, we've paid close attention to deliver an experience that is worthy of the title of your new favorite pen. But it is the amazing amount of technology packed inside the Livescribe 3 that really delivers the magic. Once you twist the ring to extend the ink cartridge, everything you write is captured by the infrared camera on the pen and stored on the smartpen’s built-in memory. Simply connect your smartpen to your iOS or Android device and watch as all your notes are synced to the Livescribe+ mobile app.
Livescribe+ is available on iOS8 or newer and Android KitKat (v4.4.2) or newer
Pencasts Help You Never Miss a Word
Using the microphones on your tablet or smartphone, create pencasts that record and synchronize audio to everything you write or sketch. Play back your pencasts to hear, see and relive notes as if you were back in your meeting or lecture so that you will never lose any important information.
Share your pencasts as PDF files, which can be easily played back on any of the devices you use every day, including Mac, Windows, Android or iOS.
Livescribe+ Mobile App
If you use Livescribe+ on more than one device, the built-in memory on your Livescribe 3 smartpen allows you to sync your notes seamlessly. Any Livescribe 3 can be paired with up to four different iOS or Android smartphones or tablets.
Available on iOS and Android, Livescribe+ is the companion to the Livescribe 3 smartpen that’s designed to quickly make your notes more useful. Livescribe+ makes it easy to integrate your notes with the rest of your mobile life:

Bluetooth Smart — Quicker Pairing, Longer Battery Life
Livescribe 3 smartpen uses Bluetooth Smart technology to pair with compatible mobile devices to deliver more than 14 hours of continuous use between charges. Pairing is also much easier – just turn on the Livescribe 3 and accept the pairing request on your mobile device with a single tap. After that, your smartpen will pair automatically each time you launch the app.
The Livescribe 3 can pair and sync to up to four devices, switching seamlessly between iOS and Android. Synchronize your notes to your smartphone, tablet and other devices so you have them when and where you need them.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I use the pen in lectures and for the most part it is a very effective piece of kit. Not having the microphone in the pen reduces the sound of the pen scratching. Although my recording device is usually beside me in the lecture hall I can still hear a faint scribbling on playback.
The software supporting the pen could do with much improvement. The app is slightly temperamental and can crash. If this happens generally any audio being record at the time will be lost. You can sync multiple books which is good because this allows easy organization of notes
The software playback of audio is very good and unlike the Sky Wifi there is no buffer time and you can skip easier between pages and notebooks. Having a wifi connection may seem attractive but relying on the cloud to do everything instead of having it more local on your device can be frustrating when trying to review work.
I think that there should be a Livescribe 3 version of the Livescribe Desktop that is used by the Echo pen. I was advised by a Livescribe CS Agent that when the app is deleted or reinstalled the audio is lost which is a big downside. There should be someway of actually backing up the audio.
I only use ios devices therefore no android support has little impact on me.
Overall this is an investment that is well worth it because it will enhance note taking and means once you sync you really don’t need the book to see your notes because everything is stored digitally which is a big plus.
Update: 12/11 - I requested a return authorization with Livescribe (since I bought directly from them). I just cannot deal with the cheap feel of the pen and the rattling noise. On the good side, I kept my Echo and even though there is a small crack in the barrel, LS will replace the barrel free as it has been a known issue. The barrel I am talking about is the front piece where the ink refill is inserted. I will wait for the next iteration of the LS3 if one comes along and is built better. Meanwhile, my Echo will (and has) serve me well.
Update: 5/5/2015 - Many moons later. I work with a company who is so secure, I am not allowed to access the USB ports for the company provided laptop. So I re-purchased this pen years later and come to think of it, I'm speechless. I'm without speech. The pen allows me to record notes on my iPhone. Since I cannot plug the Echo in my company laptop, I cannot install the Echo desktop to search notes. No longer an issue with Livescribe 3 Smartpen. Now I have my notes, portable, and searchable on my iPhone. Additionally, has anyone noticed that the pen actually feels better made than before. It does not feel cheap anymore! The ink cartridge no longer rattles, and the overall build quality has improved vastly. Maybe it's me. Maybe Livescribe is using a new facility to manufacture this pen? Who knows. Also love the fact that I can use a PIN to protect the pen in case it's lost which encrypts the Bluetooth! Bottom line, is that I am happy and will continue to use it. There are 2 issues however that I would like fixed. One is the date handler on the iPhone Livescribe 3 IOS 8 app. It says March xx, 2019 (where xx is a number from 1 to 31). I usually write the date in my notes anyway however this would be great when fixed. Also, in the Livescribe 3 IOS 8 app when searching your notes the app is not highlighting the search results like the Echo desktop. It would be easier to locate the notes you are searching for by a yellow highlight on each match. Livescribe, I have renewed confidence in you, please hear us out and fix this. Thank you.
"With the tip of the pen facing you, press down on the hand tip ink cartridge with your finger. Each time you press on the tip, the force sensing relay (FSR) should activate a dim red light which will appear on one side of the smart pens lens. The light is very faint, You may need to test the smarten in a darker environment to see this red light). If the light turns on and off when the tip is pressed and released, then there's not an issue with the smart pen FSR."
Unfortunately, my pen had no red light. There is a hard reset button under the cap active tip which I also tried but did not resolve the problem. Looking at the user reviews on the forum, it appears that the inability to record handwriting is a common problem and there is a fairly high rate of returns as a result.
I still want to give the product a chance, so will return this one and hopefully get a replacement (looks like it'll be 4-6 weeks before they'll be back in stock).
UPDATE: After writing my review, I received a response from Livescribe Customer Support (as had other people who received defective pens). 3 days later a new Livescribe 3 was delivered -- I was not expecting this until December.
The pen is much improved over previous iterations: although it is still large (similar to a highlighter in diameter), it's still easy to use with smaller hands. It looks more pen-like rather than an alien instrument. The pen quickly recognized my iPhone and iPad Air and there was no problem recording my handwriting. It does a pretty amazing job converting my rather terrible handwriting to text. As others mentioned easy Dropbox integration, ability to open URL's, send emails, launching maps, calling phone numbers, adding to calendar events, etc has worked without a hitch in my testing today.
The ink cartridge does rattle, but at least on the pen I have, it's not a distraction.
Unfortunately, it does not sync your notes automatically between different devices. There is no desktop app either. Livescribe support says they are working to support sync.
I'm unsure how durable the pen will be. Only time will tell....
I changed my rating to 5 stars because of the excellent response of Livescribe customer support and now with a properly functioning pen, it works just as advertised.

Recomendable!
