How the PowerSharp Sharpening System Works
|
|
|
---|---|---|
Step 1:Plug the CS1500 chainsaw into an outlet (make sure the outlet’s circuit is rated for 15 amps). |
Step 2:Engage the trigger and then pull back the red lever. This causes the chain to contact the internal sharpening stone. |
Step 3:Hold the trigger and keep the lever pulled back for 3 to 5 seconds to sharpen the entire chain, and then release. After 3 to 5 seconds, the chain works like new. |

I have used my share of gas operated chain saws, and no, this electric saw is not the same. Not the same fumes; mixing gas; buying gas, not the same weight; not the same cold start procedure and pulling a starting cord, over and over! And honestly, it is not the same power either. You cannot have it all, but if you are not in a hurry, and learn how the saw works, this little chain saw will click "all" of the dots! Yet, it would be helpful if the person that is using it has some knowledge on how to use a chainsaw.
If you know the general use of a chainsaw, you will know when to back off and allow the saw to cut at its pace. I found that it will cut continuously through whatever log or tree you desire to, but again, you need to know how to manage the power of the saw. In my belief, having this general knowledge alone will resolve most of the bad reviews. Sadly, I suspect operator era in some of these cases. These are some things I learned real quick about this chainsaw:
1. It has lots of power, but it will not cut as fast as most gas powered saws, but it will cut "continuously"! This is important for me, for if it did not have enough power to cut continuously, it would have been a deal breaker for me.
2. It has a great tool less chain tension mechanism; easy to keep clean and actually easy to access.
3. The auto chain oiler does a good job even when things are constant power for prolonged periods
4. The auto sharpener is okay, I guess but I did not use it that much.
5. It is lightweight in comparison to most gas models.
6. Distance from power source: Actually, I had over 125 feet of cord at one point and I honestly did not notice a power drop.
These are some things to keep in mind:
1. Each time that the chain came off, it was operator era on my part. Abrupt movement when unintentionally encountering a small sapling was one time and the other was when I was making a cut underneath a log and moved the bar sideways.
2. The chain can be placed on the bar going in the wrong direction, and this might be some peoples issue. I mistakenly placed the chain on wrong and believe me, it will not cut at all when you do this.
3. I read a couple reviews concerning the plastic build of the chainsaw and they showed pictures of melting plastic around the gear. It is quite possible that this happened, but I think if you work the saw in a method inside of its capabilities, it will not happen. If the chain is being oiled, and you are not continuously pushing the saw to the point that you hear the electrical (bog down) overload sound, then this might not happen. Such a practice will make things heat up on any engine!
4. The plastic build? Great, makes it lighter and cooler to the touch!
5. Price? Look at it this way, I have paid contractors to cut down and cut up trees around my home a few times. The smallest tree (for one tree) was 750 dollars, and upward to over $2000 for others. One of the trees I cut with this little chain saw was larger than the 750 dollar tree. So, this saw just paid for itself 7 times over!
Take a look at the attached pictures. Judging by the saw dust particles distance from the application, does it look like it was not cutting?

This electric model is not for clearing out "the South 40" or "working the ranch trail" but with a long enough extension cord, this tool gives you the opportunity to hit anywhere in a good size yard (two 100ft. extension cords will bring an acre property into full range) trimming branches and debris. Importantly, you plug it in and turn it on and it goes.
So for the average home owner, who is not doing this for a living, or working on a farm or ranch with major distances, and who just wants to 'get out there and go" - confidently - this does it. No oil-gas mixtures to worry about, no running out of gas or oil, and no having to pull-jerk start a gas model for 15 minutes and getting exhausted before you even start your work. That's the main reason I gave up on gas models. Too much set up time, and exhausting effort just trying to get the thing started just for a "quick-small project."
Yes, if there's a tree that falls on your property and knocks out the power, you can't use this. OK, so how many times has that happened to you? If it happens a lot, you have two choices: get a gas chainsaw, or better yet, move!
The self-sharpening feature is unique to this brand. Excellent add on! You just press the lever for 5 seconds - you see the sparks flying a bit (so try not to do this on a very hot, dry day in the summer over parched grass and start a fire) and your chain is sharp as new. Great feature.
It it's a little bit lighter than the gas model, and it is way lighter than a battery model. The chain stops in a split-second when you release the power or hit the brake lever.
The only part that is a tiny bit intimidating is that out of the box, you need to disassemble it a little bit by taking the chain off and let it run run for about 5 minutes to let the chain oil work its way through (so be careful to do it over newspapers or something, not on your deck as there'll be a puddle of oil when you're done. (And that means you did it right.) For some reason it isn't good enough to just add bar oil and run it for a few revolutions as one might think. But taking the chain off is easy enough, so this isn't a big problem.
This is a great chainsaw. I have two gas powered top-brand saws (we're not supposed to mention other brands in reviews) and I'll be using this one for just about everything now. (And if a tree ever falls and knocks out the power, I'll be ready with them... that is if I also have gas and oil on hand....)
I wasn't sure if the self-sharpening feature was a gimmick or something that would be useful, and I found it to be a really great feature. It works well!
No pull starting, it's quiet when I set it down, it doesn't need a tune up and doesn't need 2-cycle oil mixture, doesn't make a bunch of noise, and no spark plugs to change, no gummed up carburetors to fidget with, and it has instant torque. For a small property owner like me with just a few trees to occasionally take care of, I will never go back to gas powered again. Keep in mind I have a generator and a 100' power cord with thick (low gauge) wire. You absolutely must get a thicker gauge power cord for this saw (per manufacturer recommendations), so remember to figure that in to your expenses.
I also use a special grade chain lube for colder weather - and would not recommend running this saw (or any saw) in cold weather without a thinner viscosity lube.
Overall a fantastic product for an awesome price.
By the way, I just purchased my second one. Want to have a spare in the rare case I get one pinched (jammed) and need a spare to cut my way out of a the problem.
