I love this weedwacker!
I owned one of these before and I basically burned it out. I can’t blame the machine. I was using it all day for months at a time on very tough terrain for years. I used it in incredibly hot weather on very tall weeds, grasses and densely packed plant life. On numerous occasions the weeds were dry as a bone and on other occasions they were damp and clumpy. I ran into wood sticks and stumps, stone, metal and glass. The machine was a champ. I think the thing that finally killed it was that I used WD40 to open the string compartment and then I used the weed wacker all day. In the end, I melted the structure that holds the string compartment together. I think the inside melted from the heat generated from the WD40 and the friction combined but I can’t blame the product just the advice taken from a stupid on-line forum. That horribly hard 3-year project is done. Now I basically have a hill of grass and weeds to maintain. After reading up on all the different models I decided to buy a new one.To test it out I took on a dense project that includes a lot of tall weeds, some shrubs and vines. The new model started up and ran even smoother than the last one. In one 6 hour day, I finished the spool of string provided. I got more than half of the area of clearing down to ground level. I am very pleased. (See a before and after photo). Some vines tangled around the knob but that is to be expected and they unwound by hand very easily (see photo). One thing to note is that this only connects to a 2-prong extension cord. A 3-prong extension cord won’t fit (see photo).Pros:• The new one is easy to put together. It includes simple instructions but even without them it would be intuitive to put together.• I like the way you can adjust the handle for use on different parts of a hill or an incline. The adjustable handle also helps me level the cut with the ground (see photos). I used the black grip underneath the adjustable handle when weed wacking on a steep hill (see photo).• It is easy to use. I am a 49-year-old woman who is moderately active and this is quite manageable in general.• Compared to other products the price seemed to be straight down the middle. I feel like it is worth every penny because of all the work it helps me get done.Cons:• This isn’t the manufacturers fault but the support forums suggested using WD40 and I would never do that again.• Not really a con but as technology improves I hope the product will get lighter, after a few hours of use it gets heavy.• This is also not really a con but I hope one of these manufacturers comes up with a cord safety feature that helps the user keep the cord back away from cut risk. I know they are trying with the cord holder (see picture). I think that the cord holder is helpful in keeping the cord in place so it doesn’t fall out of the outlet connection. But I wish for a cord safety feature because I have to plan my path so I am always walking away from the cord, then I stop the weed-wacker to move the cord and then I start my next row walking away from the cord. I just imagine that when someone cracks that code the user won’t have to do so much stopping and starting in the future. In summary, this Black and Decker is a work horse and I would highly recommend it.

That horribly hard 3-year project is done. Now I basically have a hill of grass and weeds to maintain. After reading up on all the different models I decided to buy a new one.

To test it out I took on a dense project that includes a lot of tall weeds, some shrubs and vines. The new model started up and ran even smoother than the last one. • The new one is easy to put together. It includes simple instructions but even without them it would be intuitive to put together.

I am using it mainly as a weed eater which it does a great job for. Hacks them right now without motor slow down!
Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2016
First, I should specify that this is my first trimmer, so hardly an expert, but maybe that will help some others!

I decided to go with the corded option because I haven't really invested in one particular brand's battery system, my yard is small, and I didn't want to deal with a gas trimmer (and don't need that amount of power).

I was impressed first with how pre-assembled the trimmer was. You really just snap the black handle into place and put in one screw, then you're good to go. The trimmer string itself is even already installed.

The trimmer is also quite light. This is a plus and a minus, I suppose, since most of it is made of plastic to keep it light, but that also brings into question how durable it will be. For the price, though, it doesn't have to last forever and I was appreciating its lightness after an hour of trimming!

I also enjoyed the telescoping handle. I'm 6'3 and didn't find myself stooped over, but I also think someone quite short could use it comfortably.

The final step for setting it up was plugging it in. This should be easy, right? I even bought the
AmazonBasics 16/3 Vinyl Outdoor Extension Cord - 100 Feet (Orange)  to go with it. Unfortunately, as some other reviews have noted, the outlet in the trimmer is inset an inch or so and only has two prongs. This made it so I was just shy of the room needed to plug in the new extension cord. If you'll need to buy a new extension cord to use this trimmer, keep that in mind when figuring out the cost.

Using a different extension cord, I was able to get up and running. When people say where eye protection, pants, and shoes, they aren't kidding. This thing will send debris your way. After a bit of practice in an inconspicuous corner, though, I was able to get a feel for the trimmer pretty quickly. This thing might not be able to clear jungle, but it did a great job cleaning up the places my mower can't quite reach and cleaning up those edges along the sidewalk. I'd say that for most folks, there's plenty of power.

I'll update my review if the trimmer dies any time soon, but so far I'm very pleased with the price and performance for something I'll probably only use a half dozen times a year. This is a great option for most people, I'm just deducting the one star because really, any standard extension cord ought to fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good weed whacker with handy edging wheel
Reviewed in Canada on August 23, 2017
I moved in May and haven’t had a weed whacker or edging tool since then. Over time, the grass was slowly overtaking the sidewalk and flower beds. I bought this – the most inexpensive weed whacker I could find and hoped for the best.

Last week I finally got around to setting trying it out on fairly heavily overgrown walkways.

SET UP
The weed whacker is well packed in a small box for shipping. Assembly requires attaching the lower guard (with a single screw), and attaching the handle (no tool required for the handle). The unit has a rotating collar which can be backed off to allow the telescoping stick to be extended/retracted. I’m 6’1” and find the most extended position just a little shorter than ideal. There is a power cord retention loop that works well to prevent you from accidentally pulling the power cord out of the back of the trimmer.

TRIMMER
When used as a trimmer, this performs exactly the same as any other electric weed whacker I’ve used. Noise, feedback, and comfort are essentially the same.

EDGER
This (and many of the more expensive B&D models) can also be used as an edger when flipped onto its back. There is a wheel on the back of the trimmer head which allows you to maintain the proper distance from the ground while edging. The handle is easily adjustable without tools and should be adjusted when switching from “weed whacker” to “edger” mode. The edger works extremely well for grass, but is a little less effective when dense, thick weeds have taken hold.

AUTO-FEED SPOOL
The auto-feed trimming wire feature works very well, and is completely seamless to the operation. This can be a very bad thing though, because you don’t notice that you are losing/breaking the line. The first time I used the unit, I burned through an entire spool (30 feet!) without noticing I was breaking the line. B&D’s proprietary auto-feed line (AF-100) costs about $5 per spool for 30’ line if bought in 3-packs (.

OVERALL
This is a great low-cost trimmer that brings edger capability to the table. Although I wish I’d bought the 20V wireless version of this trimmer, I am very happy with what I bought, especially for the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars I would buy this again.
Reviewed in Canada on October 23, 2019
Excellent purchase. It was exactly what it said it was. Durable, good safety features (that you should expect), and maneuverable for corners and things that you would obviously use it for.
The trimmer for making an edging along the walkway was a little hard on the back,,, only because they all tend to be. It would be great to just walk along and easily make an edge without holding the unit at a particular angle. It does it as well as to be expected though. Nothing good or bad there.
I have never liked having to re-roll trimmer line to just get it on the trimmer. Need one that does it for you obviously.
Still, I say it was a good purchase for the money and the usability. I like it. I would still like it had it not been stolen, so I guess someone else liked it too. Two thumbs up for this one. It is was it says it is, and it does what it says it does. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge trimmer is great
Reviewed in Canada on May 19, 2017
This is great. I've gone through cycles with these things. First it was an electric for 20 years, but it had a big heavy motor at the end, and I thought a gas one would be great. The electric still works at the cottage. Then I went through 15 years with a gas one that I used only twice a year, but gave me a headache from the extremely loud noise. That died, and I went back to electric. It has a very powerful light motor, and I love the automatic string feed, and the edge-trimmer wheel. You can tell when it feeds and I don't think that string is lost any more than the others.
