I purchased the CM500 unit on August 17th, 2020 and activated it on Comcast Xfinity with zero difficulty. Internet speeds were within specified parameters. January 19th, 2021 (Day 153), my modem started to srop the connection every few minutes. Now it drop no longer hold a connection for more than a few seconds before losing the signal. Power Cycling, Resetting, and Reactivating this modem are totally ineffective.
I believed I was entitled to a 1 year warranty and called Netgear support. After idling for half an hour with the standard technician who (1) registered my product and (2) recommend standard troubleshooting processes (they only suggested power cycling, not resetting the system) I was informed that I would need to pay $89 USD to reactivate phone technical support for further assistance.
I am reasonably proficient in technical matters and had called with multiple copies of the Event Log and connection logs (a pair have been attached here for your benefit). They wouldn’t even look at them. They offered me a $20 USD discount to reactivate phone technical support for six months.
This is a hardware problem. (1) The power supply for the media center is filtered, (2) Downstream, (3) Upstream, and (4) SNR are all within recommended values for DOCSIS 3.x. Spontaneous connection drops from different coax ports make NO sense. Other units in the same building are reporting no issues and similar connection stats.
I expected a replacement unit to be shipped me me so I can return ship this unit. I would accept a few days of expensive tethering. However, I am deeply offended that only a “technical support agent” can authorize a RMA and that Netgear has hidden them behind a paywall that is MORE expensive than the unit itself.
Ask yourself if you would entertain the Netgear by paying MORE for a replacement unit of the same faulty product despite the first unit being under warranty. I don’t care if there is a partial “refund” for the technical service/replacement unit.
The whole principle rubs me the wrong way. And I love my Netgear nighthawk router. This experience makes me question if I ever want to buy from them again.
FOLLOWUP: My new modem (made by the makers of the iconic, Verizon flip phone) has not only replaced the defective Netgear modem - it also demolished it in stability. Does run warmer, but performance per watt is probably in favor of the new champ. Added a THIRD photo of the new modems connection stats from the SAME COAX jack.

The cheapest modem “recommended” by Xfinity was 139. Too much for what I needed with my 200mbps plan. I then looked at ones that were just compatible and I decided on the CM500-100NAS even though some people have posted reviews recently saying it’s no longer supported. But the Xfinity list of recommended and compatible modems that was last updated Nov 22, 2023 (they state that the list is updated quarterly) lists the CM500-100NAS as still being compatible for my service.
I did not follow the included installation instructions given by Netgear. Instead I got on the Xfinity app with my phone using cellular data, and selected “account” and selected “activate xFi Gateway or Modem” under “Devices”. It stepped me through the installation process. Same process as when I installed my Motorola modem in 2020.
It’s only been a few hours but no issues. Will update if anything goes wrong or I find Xfinity decides to not support this modem any longer in the next year.
