This belt sander has done what I have needed it to do right out of the box. The pressure sensor is nice and seems to be spot on. I had run this thing continuously for over 20 minutes and it never overheated and kept running and doing the job. For a good reliable budget friendly belt sander, I don't know if it gets much better than this. The filter is questionable. You might break it if you try to open the housing. I was reading that the whole piece needs to be replaced, it's probably just worth adapting a vacuum hose to for dust control.

This replaced the disappointing Ryobi BE319 that I used until the motor burnt out. This Skil sander is so much better and less than half the price of a replacement Ryobi. If you’re a DIYer like me that uses a belt sander a few times a year, there’s no sense in buying a pro sander that costs hundreds. This one may be low-cost, but very nice. The automatic belt tracking to keep the belt right on the edge works great. That makes it possible to sand right up to a vertical edge like a wall or fence. Little things like putting the trigger lock on top where it is easy to get to. There is even a pressure warning light to let you know if you are applying too much pressure.

I have several new Skil tools including the Skil Jigsaw, Skil Orbital Sander, and this Skil Belt Sander. All of them work fantastic and are a great price for moderate use DIY projects.

The feature I like the best about this belt sander is how fast you can swap belts and the auto alignment. Belts can literally be swapped in 10 seconds. And with the auto align, they never need adjustment. My father’s old belt sander was a chore. It took hex keys to swap belts and then extra time to align the belt to make sure it was tracking properly. This sander requires none of that. It’s so easy and convenient.

The only down side is the dust collector. It does minimize dust, but it fills up very quickly and is a pain to empty. Connecting a shop vac would be best, but I don’t like to be tethered down while sanding. I resorted to removing the dust collector and just letting it fly. Then clean it up later. Also note, that if the dust collector is used and becomes full, the belt gets clogged and it doesn’t sand as well. So, either empty it often, use a shop vac, or just let the dust fly.

New and improved version of one I used for more than 15 years before it finally gave out. I like the belt "auto tracking" feature of this model and the micron dust collector. It doesn't get all of the dust, but it does get a bunch that would otherwise be thrown into your face. I also like the pressure indicator which let's you know how much force your using. Using the proper sanding belt to do the work and the weight of the tool should be plenty.

I bought this sander halfway through a carpentry project when my eight times as costly Makita sander decided it was time for the motor to burn out. In my experience, this is not something unusual for Makita, their alleged robustness notwithstanding. This Skil had some good reviews so I ordered. At that price, what was there to lose? It arrived the next morning and was able to finish my project with almost no interruption. Operation is flawless, the belt stays in position and the transparent dust catcher makes sense. The 18 inch belt is a size down from the Makita but didn't notice any difference in use. Some posters have remarked the unit gets hot. I didn't find that to be the case at all but with power tools I am always mindful of duty cycle so never push these units to the limit. Show some mercy and let it cool down once in awhile and I think you will be just fine. Maintain some perspective. If your intention is to sand a ballroom floor or a roller-derby track, rent a drum sander or hire a guy who has one. This Skil is priced and built for the handyman, furniture maker, stairs and railings builder etc. - not the sort of industrial user who needs to grind down 2 x 4's into toothpicks all day.

Surprisingly light with a nice feel to it. Mine came with a medium grit belt installed - just right for many projects. As with most power tools, be sure to use hearing and eye protection and keep your fingers clear of the business end. Bottom line: "Skil" name and quality for the handyman/homeowner/craftsman at a great price.

Great compact sander. I used it to sand off 2 coats of paint from our front porch and stairs. Very powerful for its size and very easy to install the sanding belts. The pressure control system helps to ensure that you do not apply too much downward pressure on the tool. My only complaint - hence the 4 star rating, was that after a few hours use the trigger lock stopped working (perhaps clogged with dust?). I ended up using a tie-wrap to lock the trigger in place and had to unplug the sander to turn it off. Note: I do not recommend this approach, but there was too much constant sanding to do, and holding the trigger for 15-30 minutes at a time would have been too difficult. So, to sum up, very satisfied with the tool's performance - just disappointed that the trigger lock failed.
