This is the 2bd one I’ve purchased, the first one lasted 6 years which is longer than most items these days. It is the same model the chriopracter uses and it does wonders for back pain that is related to tight muscles, it looses the muscles up and allows for hand massaging to be more effective after use of the machine

I like the low and high settings for different applications on your body.
Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2016
I wound up reading a lot of Thumper reviews last night for the 2016 mini Thumper, and saw a lot of complaints about overheating after 20 minutes, etc. My wife and I have a second home in the Rockies strictly for hiking and outdoors stuff, so having a massager is crucial at the end of the day. I ordered the Thumper mini last night so we'll see how that goes.

Now, as for the Sport, we've had ours for 4 years in Florida. I give it 5 stars for the following reasons:

1. Yes, it has shut off due to heat before after 15 minutes, but we really push down on it big time, which is probably not consistent with instructions. However, it seems to go a good 30 minutes now even with the pressure, which is perfect (I massage her for 15 min, then my turn). The overheating has not been a big issue.

2. It has lost power and is not as strong as when purchased. I am not going to beat up the company over that, because as mentioned we really beat this thing up. It's clearly worn out the motor and weakened it.

3. It has never needed warranty work or quit.

I should also mention that my wife and I have done many couples spa packages together in different towns. That is always $400 minimum with a tip for a single visit. So, every review has to be in context. Some malcontents would give it 3 stars due to the above issues, but a fair evaluation is all about value. For $150 at the time, we got a great little massager that provides great relief, even at the reduced power. Four years of use all for around 40% of the cost of a single spa day. I'd say we got 5 stars worth of value. Hopefully the mini I ordered last night for our mountain property will provide the same value.

I give this a 4 of 5 stars, though that is in part due to having used a (twice as expensive) Brookstone unit for many years. A couple months ago I got this machine as a replacement to that Brookstone, and I do have mostly positive feelings about the Thumper with some critical thoughts on the differences between the two.

So that you can maybe better get a feel for how you might use this thing for yourself, here is my backstory (pun semi-intended). Almost ten years ago, I finally started feeling the effects of desk jobs. I was always uncomfortable in the chairs and desks that felt designed for bigger people (I am 5'6") and sitting is just plain bad for you, but 9 hours a day + two, hour long commutes mean that's what I spent most of my day doing.

It started with being uncomfortable a lot and progressed into sciatica, complete with shooting pain down my right leg that almost knocked me off my feet a couple times, and a huge numb patch on my right outer thigh. Later on, the place that always seemed to pinch and go out in my lower back finally slipped a disc. I could barely walk. The doctor gave me mild muscle relaxers and once the tension subsided, I pushed the disc back in place with my two thumbs. There was an audible *snick* as it went back in place, and an instantaneous wave of relief.

For me, I have come to rely on this kind of machine to help realign my discs that sometimes get a little out of place and to relieve tension of the muscles near the spine. I've tried a myriad of other fixes, and aside from a good back brace for when I am feeling prone, or my Yogi Joint tea to help mitigate some aches and pains - this thing is hands down a lifesaver for a bad back. It also feels great on the legs, bum and with care - neck and shoulders.

After a couple months of use, here are my thoughts - positive, negative, neutral - on the Thumper.

PROS:
Quiet: The Thumper is the quietest dual headed percussive massager I've ever used. The Brookstone always made me feel as though the neighbors might wonder what was going on next door when I used it - especially on one of the noisy, programmed cycles where the pulses varied.
Simple: The Brookstone had a bunch of buttons and settings. This has on/off and strength 1-5. Doesn't get much simpler than that.
Effective: I had gone without one of these for a couple months before I went looking, did some research, and settled on this unit. By the time it came in the mail, I was glad to have it. The nodules that span the spine and the percussive vibration really is exactly what I need to keep my back out of whack.
Quality: I've used the Brookstone mostly, but many years ago I had some Homedics and other cheaper brands. They aren't as percussive as the Thumper (or obviously the more expensive Brookstone) and they feel much more rickety. The Thumper, while plastic, feels pretty substantial and sturdy. Lower-cost brands feel like they would break if you thought about it too hard, and perhaps that the motor wouldn't be very enduring. The Thumper motor, while less powerful than the Brookstone, still feels high-quality. Also, with quality and power comes a weightier machine. This helps the machine do it's thing to your muscles without having to press down. It is heavy enough to feel much more substantial and high-quality compared to featherweight Homedics brands, though feels a little lighter than a Brookstone.
Price: This is a middle of the pack price. Brookstones cost $200-300 and Homedics types are probably in the $30-60 range. At $120(ish, since Amazon prices flux so much) this is right in between. And I have to say it feels it's worth double the price of a Homedics type brand. The Thumper isn't cheap, but it's a good quality machine that can truly help alleviate a lot of pains and strains, thus is more than worth the cost if you can afford it. And I think of it this way: If it means one sick day due to a bad back is missed - it's paid for itself and then some.

Cons, or things to consider:
Simple means simple: This doesn't have a lot of programmable settings like the Brookstone, with varying pulses and a million power settings. If you want that flexibility then the Thumper is not for you. It also does NOT have adjustable nodules. The Brookstone allowed for three settings of narrow, normal and wide-set nodules to get more places. I do miss this, especially the narrow which I used on my neck, but I can make do with the stationary setting on the Thumper.
Powerful, but not the most powerful: the Brookstone is louder, in part because it is SO powerful. I miss this the most of my old Brookstone unit, but Thumper is sufficient and sturdy at half the cost. For me it works.
It's just not cheap: It may be less than the Brookstone, but the Thumper isn't cheap. My boyfriend blanched when I told him the cost, as he hadn't been there for the purchase of the Brookstone. But on the other hand, he knows how much I use this and what it does for me - and for him when he needs it on occasion.

Bottom line: I am happy with the Thumper. It has helped me put my spine back in place dozens of times in the last couple months already. It feels like it is sturdy enough to do that for quite some time. If I have any problems I will be back to update this review ASAP, but otherwise I may just come back some time from now to say "Still works, love it!" or if I find a new tip that may be helpful. If I hadn't had the Brookstone before, and somewhat miss the power and the adjustable nodules, I think I would give this a 5. As it stands, I give it a 4 or a 4.5.

Hope this review helped you and hope the Thumper can help you! Best of luck!

UPDATE 10/04/2016: After having this product for just under a year, I have to say the only thing I miss about my Brookstone is the power for when something is stubbornly out of whack, but 9 times out of 10, this machine does the job and either: puts my vertebra back in place, loosens a knot and gets everything back where it should be. It stays by the bed and I can use it before I lay down when I am stiff or something has been out, to help make sure I sleep with things as aligned as possible. It's very helpful for that. Also, it can be used on the bum-cheeks, the legs and shoulders, which my boyfriend appreciates. He too misses the power of the other machine, but this one is half the cost, feels very sturdy and works pretty well for the price point.

I purchased this for my wife for our anniversary. She is a nurse and often after work her back will be in pretty bad shape. I got the idea from a friend that has the more expensive model. Every time we would visit their house she would make me find my friend's and use it on her, so I knew she was going to love her very own model.

Pros
The sport version is slightly smaller than the regular model. Personally I think this makes it easier to handle, especially when using for extended periods of time. However there is nothing lacking power wise with the massaging heads. The sport thumper offers an adjustable dial that allows you to increase or decrease the speed of the massaging heads. The best part about the adjustable dial is that it works similar to a dimmer switch; if 3 isn't quite powerful enough but 4 is too powerful, you have the ability to fine tune the massaging experience.

Cons
The power cord would be perfect if it about 1 foot longer. I wouldn't really consider this a con, because for most people the cord will be plenty long. However when my wife lays in bed the cord is at its limits. This is most likely due to the odd arrangement of our apartment. In my opinion this does not detract any value from this product.

Other notes
I didn't receive the educational DVD. Not a big deal considering I already knew how to use it, but I wouldn't mind knowing if there were any tips and tricks on the DVD.

Recommendation:
If you want something to massage yourself or your partner and are considering a Thumper, you will not be disappointed with the sport model. While the regular model is more powerful, the sport model is more than adequate and in my opinion a better overall value. I would buy this again if I had the choice.

This machine is absolutely fantastic. The extra long handle coupled with its light weight, makes this Thumper so easy to use and reach awkward places easily!

**Red Alert**, consumers!
When the Thumper company warns you in the instructions not to do something with this device, pay careful attention.
In the directions, it warned against using on the legs in a downward motion and only to use it in an upward motion. It also warned against pressing too hard.
Foolishly, I did not heed these warnings as my legs were in much pain.
Life-changing consequences for me for not paying heed to the warnings.
I ended up giving myself pitting EDEMA both of my legs. In turn, the pitting edema has caused POLYURIA.
This is not a matter to take lightly. This is a life damaging consequences of me not obeying the instructions. Now my legs are in constant pain and water is collecting in both of the legs.
I urinate frequently but especially the moment I lay down because that water in my legs needs to go somewhere. Try getting a good night's sleep with freezing cold feet most nights and the constant need to urinate 8 to 10 times a night. Serious serious consequences. So consider yourself forewarned and don't do what I did..
A former model and dancer, I now have 10" circumference cankles and pitting edema as a direct result of MISUSING THE PRODUCT against the manufacturers warnings. So take my warning and save yourself a lot of pain, heavy heavy legs from the water retention and now footwear that does not fit and now legs that are constantly freezing; particularly, freezing feet and calves on both legs. All this because I did not obey the instructions and heed the warnings seriously. My legs hurt before and that's why I was pressing hard with the device and going up and down. What I ended up doing was damaging my veins and calling the water from my torso down into my legs and it's sitting there permanently now. Where my leg on the left attaches to my torso, a lot of pain. Both legs painful but that area in particular. Again, bad bad circulation from the knees down. Socks hurt. Feet freezing. Most nights so be careful and know that winter boots that are too tight will make your feet freeze too. I got myself in a real pickle and I have no one to blame but myself. This is a very good product but again, take it from this regretful consumer, I wish I had heeded their very stern warnings:
1) do not use on your legs in an up and down motion. Avoid going downward on your legs with this device at all times.
2) do not press hard while using this device. It will indeed cause damage and irreparable damage in the form of edema in your legs. Red alert and beware. Forewarned.
*********
While amazing percussion for pain relief, I'm too weak at the moment to comfortably hold it. It's 3 LBS. I'M HESITATING TO RETURN THIS because it's so amazing but I want to be able to use it comfortably on my own and I can only lift it while laying down because MS has stolen all my strength. I love that it plugs in and does not require a battery and the cord is very long which is convenient.
