I set the HD-501 up yesterday and I'm happy to report it works as advertised. It also supports the DVI to HDMI cable from my PC which my old Kinivo HDMI switch didn't. The unit itself is very sturdy and doesn't feel cheap. I also like that the five inputs/output are all in the back vs. the kinivo which had one on the side (which was awkward). And, most importantly, after several hours of use, I had a constant signal/no image degradation on my TV and projector switching between my Xbox One, Samsung Blu Ray (3D looks great) and PC.
Minor Cons:
- Remote did not come with a battery and there is no battery spec in the documentation. Thankfully - CR2025 works, which I took from the Kinivo remote.
- Device is not in the logitech harmony database, but was easy to teach it (only a power toggle and 5 input buttons). Works really well.
- Not 1.4 certified - it's 1.3 (but I don't need this functionality)
- Red input lights are bright (I have mine behind my blu ray, but can easily be solved with tape).
The ONLY criticism - at a cost of one star, due to it's egrigious nature - is the GOD-AWFUL super-bright red LED's ... ON THE FRONT of this device!
So many place ports all around, reducing placement options - but the OREI has a five-ports aft "no-nonsense" arrangement, making it eminently suitable for up-front positioning.. but those damned LED's are SO bright I had to craft a shield to affix over them!
Subtle, soft green or blue, anyone?
Update added 23FEB15:
Had to repurchase this unit, and return the first one, due to the #2 port failure (as reported by someone else here, I believe?). Doesn't diminish my respect for the product in any way, however: STILL believe it's an exceptionally well-crafted device that delivers as promised!
I'm presently pushing an AppleTV, MacBookAir, BluRay, and component DVD player through the four functional HDMI ports without difficulty. Perfect solution to help you dump your overpriced cable or satellite services, and rely exclusively on purchased or internet-streamed content for your video entertainment and access!
Update added 24FEB15:
Well, the replacement unit I ordered arrived today and after installing it and shipping what I believed to be the defective (first) unit back, I embarked on a more thorough investigation of the problem that STILL exists with this wonderful device!
After much reconfiguration, I've determined that for some reason as yet unknown (I've written the manufacturer for their technical assistance in explaining why this issue continues - as I believe it is an intentional design construct), Ports $1, #2, and #3 will pass all traffic from BluRay, DVD, AppleTV, Roku, etc... but will NOT process HDMI signals from my MacBookAir: Ports #4 and #5, however, DO send traffic through flawlelssly... from any and all sources!
So that first "defective" device more than likely wasn't, after all... just designed to pass certain signals through certain ports?
I'll emend this review as the manufacturer responds....
STILL believe it's a great device (just needs to have more subtle LED's on the face...)!
